The story theme of Lightning Returns is “the salvation of souls” and Lightning is their liberator By Erren Van Duine on December 26, 2012 at 7:46 AM

Even more Lightning Returns information has been published online, this time from a Dengeki PlayStation staff interview.

While a good lot of it can already be found here, Toriyama and Kitase have shared a few more story hints which give a little more insight into the direction of this “World Driven” game.

Several hundred years have passed since Lightning fell into her crystal sleep, however, Chaos hasn’t spread everywhere yet. The core theme of the story is “the salvation of souls” and Lightning has somehow become their “liberator” as she is tasked with guiding souls to a new world.

The concept of religion has already been revealed in the city of Luxerion by the existence of their mad religious cult. Each of the other continents will have their own concepts as well, although full details have yet to be revealed.

That sounds interesting. Thanks for the news!

I have this theory for a long time now that the new world will be the world Noctis living and Lightning will sacrifice herself in this game in order to achieve that.

    How queer.

  • juma086

I like that. Too bad SE wont do it though…

I’m becoming more and more scared for this game’s outcome. But then again being pessimistic about it will make me feel good about it if it does not disappoint. Or just ok if it does.

    TORIYAMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA ヽ(#`Д´)ノ

  • Himiko

I’d rather not. Each FNC game has been separate and I’d like to see each unique vision through without being connected aside from a superficial one.

  • Himiko

Sounds interesting. This will be very religion-heavy then.

  • Nathaniel Silversmith

I thought this guy was being sarcastic about the game so I +ve repped his post. If he was serious.. I think I’ll change that to a -ve..

  • Nathaniel Silversmith

I miss the time when I could defend Lighting and the other characters as being well versed and developed, whilst genuinely feeling I was telling the truth. Now however..

  • Himiko

It sounds more superficial and has a connection to the mythology.

sounds interesting; still looks crap though…

I like the idea however since 2012 SE has stated that want lightning to end happily. I don’t think they will kill her.

  • Tenjyusei

I’d be satisfied if they all just started to live normally in that new Cocoon or Novus Partus after all that kerfuffle.

Can’t even figure out what’s a “happy ending” for Lightning.

  • Nathaniel Silversmith

The ending to XIII was a very happy ending, especially for Lightning (not too happy for Hope). The talk from producers of making this game to give her a happy ending is really a talk of them trying to make the directors of Sqex Holding Co. happy with a good bank statement.

It makes sense because XIII games do make them money. Doesn’t make a crap game any better though. And doesn’t mean they know how to function in their particular market efficiently.
