Today’s breaking news comes from Square Enix merchandise guru Hidemi Matsuzuka, who updated his Twitter feed with a single shot of what will become the next official FF Versus XIII goods.

Accompanied by the single line of “Prince!” Hidemi “Mad Dog” produced a picture of a new version of fragrance with “Noctis” Eau de Toilette branding aside it. Similar to the Cloud, Sephiroth, and Lightning versions available in the past, this one will likely contain a strap themed around the game world in addition to a price of around ¥7,140.

So why tease such goods now? Perhaps the warm spring is approaching quicker than anyone realizes, and movement on the title has begun. Some have speculated that Final Fantasy Versus XIII will indeed see its re-reveal soon – a promise made several months ago by Producer Shinji Hashimoto. The game has been shrouded in mystery since its appearance at the Square Enix 1st Production Department Premiere back in January 2011. Since then rumors have swirled concerning the game’s cancellation and possible move to a next generation platform.

With Sony set to reveal the PlayStation 4 this week, anticipation couldn’t be higher.

The game isn’t Final Fantasy XV or running on the PS4 (which also hasn’t been announced) until it confirmed as otherwise. Stop assuming things without any real proof.

And don’t say that Type-0 is your proof, because they actually had a reason for the switch. There is no reason given for any switch here and if they were going to change the title, they would have done it at the same time as Type-0.

I’m tossing my hat into the “Versus switched to PS4″ ring. Somewhere in the time between January 2011 to December 2012, SE were addressed about the PS4 coming up, and they decided to switch the consoles. This whole perfume thing is the perfect thing to get people thinking about Versus, before the inevitable reveal on Wednesday.

There is no way Versus turned to 15, its gameplay and story are too different from mainstream FF games.

You are completely right. So let me just clarify what I meant to say.

The gameplay is vastly different than previous titles. Doesn’t it change from game to game anyway? Yeah, but it can be argued that each numbered FF game always has the turn-style combat, with each one just putting its own twist on it. As has been stated by many, the Versus combat is a lot more similar to KH than FF.

Another point to be argued is the setting/story of the FF series. Yes, each game has different stories and settings. However, FFs 1-14 are all Fantasy Worlds with elements of Reailty. Versus is more of a Realistic World with Fantastical elements to it.

I don’t question if it’ll live up to the FF in its name. If even half of the stuff we know about it is true, then it’ll be one of the best FF games around. But Versus is definitely different from the usually FF brand. This can all change though, since it’s been so long since we’ve seen anything…

A small quibble: Both XII and Lightning Returns have realtime battles. While it’s true that you select commands from a list in XII, it’s not turn-based at all. Lightning Returns cuts you away to a separate battle screen, but features player-controlled movement and abilities mapped to face buttons that are executed automatically. XIII and XIII-2 have more hands-off realtime systems which give the illusion of being turn-based. The battle system of Final Fantasy has been slowly evolving toward a more ARPG style, and the system present in Versus (what little we’ve seen of it) would seem to be the next step. For that matter, though, non-numbered Final Fantasy titles are filled with a wide variety of battle mechanics from turn based to action. Non-numbered titles advance the series too, after all.

On the subject of stories, though, I’m going to have to disagree majorly. Final Fantasy VII was set in a fairly modern world, pretty much comparable to the time the game was released. It had fantasy elements like the life stream, the monsters that appeared, and magic, but most of the setting looked like it could have conceivably existed in the early 90s. Final Fantasy VIII was also semi-modern, although to a lesser extent than VII. This game definitely looks like it’s taking the modern feel farther than anything previously, but it’s not unheard of in the series.

The only things I’ve seen that seem wildly different/new are the almost tragic romance vibe between Noctis and Stella (which is just a vibe) and what appeared to be gameplay specific to the character you’re controlling. (Noctis’ teleportation which was reported to be part of his fighting, the guy with the gun, etc.)

We wait forever for a new snippet of information on the game, and it happens to be about a fragrance. I don’t think many people have actually lost hope in the game, but you can’t say that this isn’t a little silly.

True. To put things into perspective, though, Somnus from Versus XIII was released as dlc for the FF rhythm game earlier last year.

We’ll see what happens. Right now I’m just taking things as they come.

As someone who owns Lightning version, I have to say the quality of the perfume is incredible. They are solid perfume even without the brand association.

Having said that, I’m still not a fan of buying scent without being able to smell it first.

and if that’s true then the story has gone to shit, and why the buck would you want versus on a new console? You would have to pay 400-500 for a PS4 along with 60-80 for the new game, and if the rumors of the PS4 are true, the specs are already out dated, you won’t be able used games, and you must always be online in order to play games, I know this rumor is not true (99% sure lol) but I still feel it’s too early for a new system, hell, the makers of Heavy Rain have said that there still discovering new things with the PS3.

I first heard about this game back in 2006 when I got all ridiculously hyped about it -.-

7 years later and nothing… I even remember my dad telling me I’d have to pull my own weight if I wanted any more games (was 16 at the time) and being a game freak I started obsessing over jobs and different ways to make money because I wanted the PS3 so bad and had to “manage my own self” (according to dad). Problem with that was with the minimum wage I was making and juggling college with waitering and delivery jobs it would’ve taken me about a year everytime I wanted to be able to afford one single game FOR the PS3 let alone an entire PS3. Took me a lot to get to where I am today… 7 years later… a shitload of money in the bank from practically passive income at 23 (mainly due to this lil gem http://tinyurl.com/bzj997z ), yet no worthy SE games to buy… Are you shitting me SE? Though in a way I guess it did me a lot of good, financially at least. But goddamit I want that game.

Hypothetically speaking to end this generation with Lightning Returns: FFXIII and to usher in a new one with a rebranded and renewed “Versus” on PS4 make perfect sense to me. Of course, I’m rather disappointed that “Versus” hasn’t seen the light of day on PS3, and I haven’t been a fan of Square Enix’s presentation and PR handling (even though I understand where the staff members are coming from).

However, the company is confident that it’ll be a better game for the PS4 and wants to release it at a later time–after all, the game has been described as ambitious and large in scope–then I’ll support its decision and cheer the developers on.

In the meantime, despite the [intentionally?] subpar quality of the photo, the perfume looks to be great although at this point, I’m more of a fan for the Lightning one (again, due to photo quality). I’m surprised how much merchandise stems from the FF series!
