Final Fantasy VIII achievements show up in Steam database By Erren Van Duine on March 12, 2013 at 1:04 PM

Nearly two years ago, Final Fantasy VIII (along with Final Fantasy VII) showed up in Steam’s registry database.

The original find, reported on by RPG Site, contained dummy files for both titles – with FFVIII appearing to be a modified version of the original PC release. Since their discovery, the files were promptly removed and their existence fell into obscurity.

Last year, however, Square Enix decided to resurrect the PC version of FFVII, although they chose to release the years old port on their own digital platform rather than Steam. Met with crippling DRM and other game-breaking issues, many fans were left wondering if this was really the right choice. As of several months ago, Square Enix had no plans to move the game “back” to Steam.

So the question now is – has something changed? This set of leaked achievements seems to offer a small hint and given Square Enix’s other titles on the platform, it would only make sense to extend more of their back catalog toward a larger potential user base.

While the evidence here doesn’t necessarily guarantee a Steam release for FFVIII, it’s certainly a good sign. Only time will tell if it turns out to be true.

Oh, what I would give for a Final Fantasy VIII HD remake… By the way, I don’t feel like achievements suit for Ff7 or Ff8. You have your achievement if you beat the omega weapon.

Absolutely brilliant game with a really sophisticated visual and musical design.Played it for the first time last year and I was really impressed by how the CG transitions into in-game.Also I found it really unique and addictive with its draw system and card game.More RPGs should implement other systems next to battles in the games and they need to be deep.

My only gripe is difficulty of the game and the fact that a BLIND playthrough will get pretty tough on disc 3 & 4.People say this game is easy only cuz they know so much about it.The whole junction , card refinement , and draw system is fairly cryptic , intricate and never fully explained in the game.

Still this is absolutely one of my favorite games and my favorite PS1 gen FF.

Did you try to delete your comment so you could re-write it or something? I know that when you click delete it actually just removes your profile info from the comment, but other than that I dunno how it could’ve happened.

I agree! This is actually one of my favorite Final Fantasy games, and although I was terrible at the Draw system I always felt that it and the GF Junctioning were some of the deepest, most involved combat mechanics of the entire series. I would love to see this game get some upgrades, although even just a Steam release will make me quite pleased. Right now, I actually own the game on every system it has seen release on except the PSP.

I’m playing through FF VIII currently and really enjoying it. The game has a fresh take on the battle system, and the characters and plot are very well done. I love the music and mature themes. Things get pretty epic on disc 3.
My few gripes are that weapon attacks are extremely underpowered, and yes, like someone said before, the difficulty of the game spikes on disc three, where you will face monsters that seem to cast confuse, silence, and death repeatedly (and sometimes all in the same battle).
Part of it is my own fault, because I insist to play the game with the battle speed maxed out and on active. So in that sense, every second counts in choosing my plan of attack for certain battles. However, this challenge is addictive because every choice I make matters.
I also find the depth of customization of Guardian Forces to be a nice touch, and it makes up for lack of equipment and only minor weapon upgrades.

Oh My. So many praises for final fantasy 8 in one place! I thought I was a rare breed being the only one who seemingly enjoyed the game that I know lol. (well, me and the guy at gamestop in downtown SF who always says ‘ff8 love!’ when he sees my Griever necklace :P )

Actually, I’ve noticed the Final Fantasy VIII seems to be the Final Fantasy XIII of the PS1 generation. It got mixed fan reception, and despite having some really good systems to it one or two things set off a ragebomb that really seemed to just poison the groundwater of fan opinion. I recall having to defend VIII just as fiercely as I defend XIII today, so I was pretty surprised that lately it’s being remembered in a rosy light. This is one of the old Final Fantasy games I really wish would get an HD remake.

Since playing FFVII on playstation, I have been hooked to all Square Enix has brought to the fore. However, the one game that had me in total awe was FFVIII. They have had rumours for years of re-releasing FFVIII and I have waited loyally with baited breath. I am annoyed also that when we asked for a follow up to FFVIII they refused…Yet did so for FFX etc.
I think Square Enix should listen to the views of their customers rather than dangling carrots that don’t commit to anything

What? FF8′s only drawback is its being far too easy. You get a boss (like diablos), draw 100 units of a good magic (like demi), refine other good magics from instruments (like 100 curaga), junction them to HP, strength and whatever and you end up having more than 4000 hp at level 17 and causing 800 damage per physical blow. Bosses fall ridiculously easily even if you take them on with only one character alive.
