Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII will be a digital download too By Erren Van Duine on March 11, 2013 at 5:39 PM

Lightning Returns will eventually see a digital release, according to Director Motomu Toriyama.

In a new interview published on Final Fantasy Network, Toriyama penciled in a few more details on the game as well as a confirmation that the title would see a digital release. This comes as no surprise at least on the PS3 side of things as Sony has been pushing their “Day 1 Digital” campaign for some time now. Some of Square Enix’s own titles have already been apart of this initiative, with the latest including last week’s release of Tomb Raider. An “official” announcement has yet to be made, and will likely appear closer to release

We also got to catch back up with the LRFFXIII team, so please look forward to our own interview very soon.

Very interesting! Hope SE really gets revived from it’s “ashes” with the following games! And LR seems really promising, so why not get a digital release too? Can’t wait for your next interview! You really do a great job!

  • Ehren Rivers

Well, I certainly hope your questions are better than theirs. It’s disheartening how much the same questions are getting asked and answered over and over. I look forward to your interview.

I made sure mine were ones that had never been asked.

Thank the stars! I love you, no bromo. Even more excited to read your interview now. Did you also get just five questions, or was it an ‘as-many-as-you-can-fit-in’ situation?

I also had 5, which is why it was doubly important to make sure they were good questions.

Is it me or they are less promoting LR than they were promoting 13-2?

I remember the marketing campaign for 13-2 to be a bit extreme, the game was everywhere, even the smallest gaming event had it. They published trailer after trailer, and yet, we only have one trailer for LR, and we heard almost nothing new since the announcement in August. We heard a few new things during the Press Tour, but not that much.

Other than FF14:ARR what is Square Enix line-up for PAX East?
I believe it’s time for LR to come back in the spotlight. As much as I want to play FF14:ARR, I’m very tired to hear about it, since we’ve been hearing about it for the past 4 years (since the announcement in 2009), enough of media information, I want the game now, my interest cannot go higher than it already is; was hyped for 1.0, is hyped for 2.0, want so bad to be in the beta which was originally intended for December, talking about it more is killing me.

And I won’t even mention FFversusXIII which deserve his share of media spotlight.

The difference between Lightning Returns and XIII-2 is that LR was announced within two months of beginning development; XIII-2′s first leak was about 8-9 months after development started, and the media warpath didn’t really start until the game had been in development for about a year. They showed off some early footage of Lightning Returns in that first trailer, but it’s all been beta stuff with mountains of placeholder graphics, music, and voices.

According to Square Enix, the version we’ve been shown of the game is the earliest, roughest version of a Final Fantasy that has ever been shown to the public. This was a trusting move on their part, but it has received very mixed responses. Some people are under the impression that the early footage is going to be the final footage, for example. In January/February the team confirmed that they had not yet begun a graphical focus or started optimizing the game.

Basically, we got an early look but the game hasn’t been ready for a proper show-off just yet. XIII-2 had a PAX East trailer, so hopefully LR will get the same treatment. If not, it’s highly likely we’ll see a new trailer at E3 in June. The game is seeing a simultaneous worldwide release in the fall/autumn, so they only have a few months worth of an advertisement window. I’d say they are probably gearing up for it.

  • sadsad sadsad

    Ask about PS4 FF.

  • Ehren Rivers

I’ve been wondering that myself, but Erren seems to be on a much different schedule than the rest of the fansites. It’s often a few days before interviews like this get typed up.
