Final Fantasy Agito gets a teaser trailer and screenshots By Erren Van Duine on September 12, 2013 at 12:00 AM

Square Enix has posted the first teaser trailer for Final Fantasy Agito – the recently revealed alternate take on the FF Type-0 universe – online.

The game – which will arrive on iOS and Android as a Free to Play title with microtransactions this Winter – also sees the opening of its official teaser site, which can be accessed here and contains various screenshots and character art.

Full details on FF Agito can be read in our full report here with even more information expected at next week’s Tokyo Game Show where the game will be on display in video form.

so…it’s going to be like Persona 3 Portable? the gameplay will stay the same, but when you’re in the school (oddly enough both have schools…) it becomes a visual novel/dating sim. either that or the cutscenes will be butchered into self portraits (at least they’re somewhat animated)…
it’s sad just knowing that will most likely get this, but not the actual Type-0

  • Sapientia

    Oh my days.

  • surakian

I like the idea of deciding how things go in the story, I love the portraits and how they are animated, and the graphics overall. I also like being able to make my own avatar. The concept itself as a re-imagining is pretty interesting, too.

Everything else about this is a huge turn-off.

  • Sapientia

The only tiny gripe I have is the Persona-esque talking bubbles/screens (which Persona didn’t invent obviously, but it reminds me a lot of)…I hope there’s actual cutscenes, because Type-0’s were freaking beautiful.
    Izana… :'(
Edit: People complain about no Type-0, we get Agito…and then people complain it’s not Type-0.
    Okay. >.>

  • Erren Van Duine

Yep F2P microtransaction stuff is a terrible trend. This game is basically pay to win if you don’t want to wait and who knows how long the cool down period is.

  • surakian

See, I really like the character profiles and speech boxes in this. It’s not a cutscene, but I like the traditional visual novel look to it and that works for a mobile game like this that seems to be spending most of its resources on the gameplay graphics. I also like the really nice animations made for the character faces. Type-0 did have the best cutscenes, though.

I think the complaints are not that Agito is not Type-0, but that Type-0 still hasn’t made its way to the west and SE is already trying to capitalize on the franchise with a new mobile game. Instead of putting resources into a game like this, they could have made Type-0 HD or just port the game to Vita or 3DS. And the fact this is a social F2P game that seems to have streamlined gameplay, which is far from what Type-0 is.

  • surakian

Oh, and the fact SE is starting to go mobile crazy and it’s really off-putting when they could support handhelds with fun, amazing, smaller-budget games and still make good money.

  • Somber

Oh My~ just trailer alone made my day!

  • Sapientia

I just think people are counting out a Type-0 port/localization/whatever…I mean hell, I would be really surprised if something wasn’t announced at this year’s TGS…it just makes sense. I’m fine that this is a mobile game. Even though it looks different than past mobile remake games of SE’s (FFI-IV), I think it’s a great idea. Not every game has to be on a console to be enjoyable, and I know people freak out when they hear “free to play” but hey, no one said you have to play. *shrug* I’m perfectly fine with spending money on something I want to get the most out of, and the idea of playing this game with friends or FF fans or whatever just sounds awesome. FFXIV:ARR all over again.
People can stick their tongue out at me all they want for sticking up for F2P games, but I’m happy Agito is coming, point blank. 😀

  • Erren Van Duine

They used to be dedicated handheld kings…

  • Protosin

    Man… I want Type-0.

  • surakian

It makes sense to get a localization? Because yeah I can agree with you on that. It does make sense, but it’s been two years and nothing has happened so people are rightfully apathetic or upset about it.

Of course not. There are some amazing mobile games on the market by many developers, SE included. The problem is that Square Enix has explicitly stated they plan to concentrate on mainly AAA games and mobile titles, and that is where the concerns and fears come into play. They are skipping over an entire audience of fans who liked their handheld games, Type-0 included, and going mobile with Agito feels like they are further abandoning that audience with a game series they really treasure/admire/want to play.

It is great you like these games and are willing to spend the money. You’ll enjoy this game! Others aren’t so easily pleased by these kinds of social games especially since it seems like SE is ignoring one audience for another by making these kinds of decisions, and then we have the western audience that is certainly not pleased when, again, the game where this re-imagining stems from hasn’t even been released for them yet and there is no sign of it happening.

And certainly not every brand that SE has should suddenly go mobile, which is what they seem to be trying to do right now. We have a FFTactics social game, TWEWY social game, KH social browser game, FF social game, Agito that is a social game, DQ social browser game, BD browser social game, FF social card game, not to mention their original IPs mobile games like Guardian Cross, Million Arthur, that Million Arthur spin-off, and a bunch of other social/mobile/card/browser games. That’s a lot of brands being made into social/browser/mobile games. Too many to me, honestly.

  • Erren Van Duine

I have it, but I would like to see it in English.

  • Death Penalty

I’d buy the heck out of this. I’m a patient guy so I’ve never had a problem with free to play models before- and in the end I’ll probably throw a few bucks into it just to give myself a little boost. When this was first going around the internet I wasn’t even aware it was free to play, so going in expecting to spend some cash anyway helps. After all, I don’t get most of my games for free anyway.

Looks like a great way to kill some time, especially given that the other Final Fantasy offering in recent memory like this is All the Bravest. This seems like a drastic improvement.

Edit: Hahaha, wait a sec, I just posted that assuming it would be localized. How silly of me.

  • Billy Jackson

Out of protest to micro transactions I will not be buying this!

  • Guest

    Agito certainly looks flashy . . .

I’m sorry, but I must say I cannot fathom any inspiration for this project other than, “It looks profitable, so let’s give it the green light!” Although Agito was originally meant to be a mobile phone title, a lot of things about this project, as surakian has put it, “is a huge turn-off.” I can’t quite put my finger on the precise reason, but something is definitely rotten somewhere.

I don’t think I will be trying out this title after all. Nothing lost, right, Square Enix?

  • Nokuto

If only this was also on Vita… it could really boost its sales. See, the thing is, I REALLY want a Vita, but none of the current titles they have for it really interest me. FF Agito for PS Vita would be perfect.

  • Anime10121

Dont have it, but OH DO I WANT IT (localized of course)!!!

  • heero2001

    … It’s Free

  • The game looks f*cking cool! The graphics are pretty darn good for a mobile game and I simply love the new artstyle the characters got when they’re speaking…don’t know how to explain that, but it looks a little bit celshaded or something. Please Square-Enix, localize both Type-0 and Agito and you’ll have my money!

  • Noctis Caelum

This looks even better than the psp version.
    Want this now.

  • Death Penalty

I guess I fail to see the problem with a free to play system? I mean this seems like a straight up win-win for both gamer and developer. The resentment for microtransactions seems to come from a general feeling of “Aw lame, I have to pay for this game?!” which isn’t even the case unless you’re impatient, and which is something you’ve probably done for the vast majority of games you play anyway.

The price of admission is free, so you essentially get a demo that’s as long as you want and encompasses as much of the game as you want it to. You don’t have to pay a dime if you don’t want to, so if you have misgivings and those misgivings are confirmed, it hasn’t cost you anything and you can just set it down. Or, it could actually be good and you might be willing to kick a couple of bucks its way, and would that really be so terrible? Free to play and microtransactions aren’t inherently bad, I don’t think. If anything they give players with doubts a huge advantage compared to just about any other method of payment plan.

I mean, it’s entirely possible that the systems of the game could be so wrapped up in the microtransactions that it’s no fun to play without paying, but if that’s the case just go ahead and set it down because it’s a shoddy experience and you didn’t pay anything anyway. Win-win!

  • Jonathan Molina

Hmm, not sure how I feel about this. It was obviously impossible to rip Type-0’s combat directly into this project given the disparity in controls, so the main gameplay is going to have a major overhaul. I hope it’s not too streamlined.

  • Sapientia

Yeah, but with the west’s freakin’ HUGE mobile gaming market? I can kind of see why they haven’t localized Type-0 for the PSP since the market for that thing in NA (and EU?) just utterly sucks, but it seems like they’d be crazy not to localize it.

  • Sothe Zephyr

Or…they could focus on a localization of type-0 instead? LoL looks cool though, worth looking into i guess :l

  • Sothe Zephyr

Meh…want english type-0….the jap version is beautiful and it is a shame that not everyone can enjoy it…..i feel like this is a shut up button to the west lol…”Here’s your ‘type-0’ now stop flaming” lol……-whispers- il never stop…. (i really don’t think that but it would be funny :3)

Truly though, I know the story but my troubles is in the weapons/items, idk what is and isnt a potion/antidote/phoenix down etc lol or what attacks make a big magic shield or heal the caster……what spells are good/bad like……at this point, id take a version with translated menus lol
(Machina looks sick in blue, no?)

  • Sothe Zephyr

Me too but idk what is going on! I know the gist of the story but I want to hear the voices in english, read english sub titles and item names, know what attacks are good and bad……i cant rlly play it to the best of my ability, im stuck at Byakko :l

  • Sothe Zephyr

SORRY FOR THIS BUT! Ehren/Erren, what happened to http://www.novacrystallis.com/2011/10/bump-of-chickens-zero-theme-song-pv/ – i relied on this vid since it is my fav song lol also, how doesone get their hands on the song by living in NA (Canada)?

  • Iceygames

you have to download it or purchase it somewhere.

  • Death Penalty

Of note, the gameplay seems to have become turn-based, judging by the screenshots shown. Not bad, if you’re asking me. They seem to have retained depth with plenty of attack options, jobs for your character, etc. Hopefully more light will be shed at TGS, I’d love to see if things like the War Gods are still present and just how the relationships with other characters will function. The art-like models on the character portraits are GORGEOUS though.

  • Sothe Zephyr

    Yea….but where Dx

  • Iceygames

So man, I can’t give you a link and trust me I know how hard it is to find. just google FF type-0 bump of chicken zero mp3 mediafire

    That’s all I can say 😉

  • Storm2356

It’s free to play, but it, like many a free to play game, features micro-transactions where the player pays real money for items. Not necessary to do, but it’s still there, and people hate micro-transactions.
