Kingdom Hearts III will feature various theme park-like attractions rolled into gameplay

This morning at Disney’s first ever D23 Expo in Japan, Tetsuya Nomura and Shinji Hashimoto took to the Kingdom Hearts Limited Stage to deliver some long awaited news on the series as well as a few surprises.

Following the expected announcement for Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 ReMIX – scheduled to launch on PS3 next year – the pair debuted a new look at Kingdom Hearts III, which has remained in the shadows since its formal announcement at E3.

According to our friends at FF-Reunion, the trailer started off in the familiar world of Traverse Town where Sora is fighting against a load of Heartless before he jumps up and releases a homing fire attack. His Keyblade then changes into something that shoots off a repeated fire barrage. The next scene shifts over to a lit up boat attraction – similar to Peter Pan’s in Disney’s Electric Parade. As the boat sways back and forth, the camera pans to Sora, Goofy and Donald – the latter of which is strapped in by the attraction’s safety bar. This extravagant setup is actually apart of an action called “Roll Splash”

The following scene shows a fight against the Rock Titan, which features the Big Thunder Mountain attraction with extending railroad tracks as it moves along. Instead of simply mashing forward, it seems there is a sort of circular pattern Sora will have to follow around Titan as he attacks it.

While the game is obviously still early in development, Nomura did confirm that the content shown in the video is already the kind of play that is possible. Although this time fans were treated to a look at battles, both Sora and Riku will return for this outing and others including Roxas will be characters to look forward to in the future.
