Relive Final Fantasy XIII in a retro style in this new Lightning Returns promo By Erren Van Duine on January 29, 2014 at 11:43 AM

With the western release of Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII approaching fast, Square Enix has put out another promotional video for the series – although its format is something neither you nor we could have expected. The video re-tells the story so far – events seen in Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy XIII-2 – in the style of the classic Super Nintendo Final Fantasy titles, complete with retro graphics, not-entirely-accurate but still original use of SNES-style sound fonts for music & sound effects and a neat little sense of humor about parts of the game.

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII is available across North America on February 11th and Europe on February 14th. The game will also be available for download through the PlayStation Network for $59.99 with a Collector’s Edition of the game being sold exclusively through Square Enix’s online store for $89.99.

They should definitely make the game this way and re-sell it.

  • XYFEIR

    I’d SO buy it. <3

  • XYFEIR

The part with Caius and Yuel, I laughed harder than I should have. XD

    This is so neat! :>

  • Wow. That… was… AWESOME! And adorable. 🙂

    Poor Yeul. Haha.

Agh, I wish this was an actual game. It would be perfect for mobile/iOS.

  • Somber

Cool, Neat, Adorable and Funny at the same time.

  • OathkeeperSoraXIII

I’d want to buy this on Vita (my phone is too shit to play games >.<) I'd miss the voice acting but it would be refreshing to see how they could do it with the classic atb system

  • Storm

that was so cool and nostalgic

  • vagrant_soul

Just when you think the XIII series is over, SE finds a way to have fans lusting again… but seriously I play it in a heartbeat!

  • OathkeeperSoraXIII

Didn’t XIII-2 take place in 3AF not 2AF as they put in the video? xD

  • Ehren Rivers

Yeah, there were a few mistakes in the video. It’s just meant to give a basic overview, not be exact.

  • OathkeeperSoraXIII

thought that was the case. Either way it was very well done imo. Except there was a lot of other info missing but as a basic overview it was pretty good

  • resh_aykut

This is the best trailer i ve ever seen . thank you square enix ***

  • Nokuto

That was fantastic! I really want to play a 16-bit version of the XIII games.

  • Gust

Well now I know how they would have looked in the older days.

  • Wazi the pa

    Hahahahahhaha THIS IS AWESOME!

  • Mateus.E

What impresses me is how they made Caius’s situation as funny as it is tragic.

  • Mateus.E

basically it would be final fantasy dimensions,I think.I imagine the roles would become “jobs”…but honestly,it wouldn’t be any different from what we have seen,I suppose.

  • Mateus.E

they would make quite a profit. There were people so blinded by nostalgia that reported in youtube that the games would actually get better with those graphics and the usual ATB gameplay from old games.
I imagine they would even ignore the “mess” of a story…

Didn’t really realize that Valhalla an Cocoon was a reused concept, i saw lightning fall and immediately thought “underworld and overworld” and now that you mention it, the plates on FF7 are similar and so is the farplane in FFX – I was expecting her to say im Gotham’s reckoning at the end…
