GDC Interview: Yoshida talks big upcoming changes in Patch 2.2

Naoki Yoshida’s attendance at GDC has been paired with an interview via Dengeki where he was asked myriad of questions to do with Final Fantasy XIV’s origin and on-going development, as well as its similarities to ‘that one another’ MMO World of Warcraft. More interestingly were the new facts that were conversed regarding in-game changes coming in Patch 2.2 including Zodiac Weapons, the abolition of Philosophy Tomes as well as changes to Darklight Equipment, Retainer Services, Fantasia Potion sales and the future of the game.

Naoki Yoshida states that the Zodiac Weapons are a form of upgraded Relic Weapon which will take a considerable amount of time to complete, and will be upgraded in the form of phases in each patch. Yoshida goes on to mention that not many players will have the first phase completed before the second one launches in 2.25, and that this is a very overtime goal for players to work on and that their viability as future weapons will remain for some time.

Regarding Philosophy Tomes, Yoshida further states that Mythology will become the new norm for Tome Rewards, and that Philosophy Tomes will no longer be attainable. He mentions that an NPC will be added that will allow the exchange of Philosophy to Mythology tomes at a predetermined rate, and that items attainable via Philosophy Tomes such as Darklight Armour will be moved to the new high level roulette dungeons; Brayflox Longstop Hard, Halatali Hard and The Lost City of Amdapor, however nothing was mentioned in regards to Relic and Philosophy Items.

Also asked was a question regarding item sales in Final Fantasy XIV, Dengeki asked if the development team has considered any ideas for selling items such as the Fantasia Potions due to fan demand. While Yoshida generally confirmed that Fantasia Potions and additional Retainer Services have been considered he continued on saying more will be revealed in the upcoming LIVE Letter on the 21st March.

Finally, questions were asked regarding the future direction of the game and content, Yoshida stated that they have been hard at work planning for 3.0 (The first expansion) and that they’ve mapped out all the areas, cities, content and raid dungeons that will be launching along with 3.0. Yoshida also remarked that they have a large variety of plans for the end of the patch 2.X series, could we potentially see another ground-breaking CGI movie and story continuation for “the party”?

With all this new information flooding in regarding upcoming content and changes, the wait for Patch 2.2 on the 27th March feels even further away, but thankfully the LIVE Letter on the 21st will appease us all somewhat while we patiently wait for patch notes to land on our laps.
