Why Final Fantasy Type-0 HD is a distraction and not a gift for fans By Spencer Pressly on June 18, 2014 at 10:56 PM

Square Enix had a great E3 in 2013 with the announcement of Final Fantasy XV along with many other great titles releasing soon. Ever since then Square has been doing its best job to keep fans of the series content until they were ready to show  more with other titles such as Final Fantasy XIV and Final Fantasy X|X-2. Naturally most people assumed they were waiting for E3 2014 since no major news for Final Fantasy XV had appeared since its reveal last June, but a few days before the event started we got word that the game would remain silent for some time longer. While many fans were extremely disappointed to hear this, it must have been a real surprise to Square Enix just how little they had to show without it at E3 this year.

Die hard Final Fantasy fans did glimpse a glimmer of hope, however, with the announcement of Final Fantasy Type-0 HD coming to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One – although ultimately it ended up coming off as a real afterthought as it was “officially” announced at the end of a trailer for the iOS and Android game Final Fantasy Agito, a free to play companion to Type-0. The announcement included a single screenshot from the game and proclaimed the localization of Type-0 HD was officially underway after months of organized fan efforts. Now over a week since that trailer released and no real news aside from a few voice actors working on the game have surfaced and the original announcement has sort of lost its original luster in light of its aftermath.

This is important to note because for all extensive purposes Square Enix has probably just started on this project and it was only announced so fans who were excited for Final Fantasy XV had something to look forward to. When I first saw that this game was finally coming to the west I was excited like many other people until I started really thinking about it. Why else would Square Enix finally announce a title that has been heavily requested by fans and have such a lackluster showing for it? The only possible reason I could come up with it is that they saw the negative feedback towards Final Fantasy XV not being at this years show and had to rush something that was clearly not ready to show off out the door. The lack of real footage and details – similar to what Square Enix pulled back in 2011 with Final Fantasy X HD ahead of the Vita launch – only cements my hypothesis.

Not only have we still not seen any gameplay for Type-0 HD, but we also don’t know when it will release or if it’ll include any new features besides the game being displayed in HD. For the most part HD collections are centered around buffing the original content with some new textures and character models here and there – and by Square Enix’s own admission, the game will most definitely not be a remake. The lack of information is concerning because Square Enix has fallen into development troubles in the past like it did with Final Fantasy X|X-2 HD Remaster, although they had more success with both of the Kingdom Hearts HD collections, readied alongside the development of Kingdom Hearts III. Ultimately, fans are left to speculate based on that uneven history.

14388493685_3751c7ed9f_zTo add insult to injury this announcement came less than week after the talented team at Sky’s RomHacking Nest just wrapped up their fantastic English translation patch for the original PSP game. Now while this doesn’t make any of their work translating this massive game mean any less, it just seems like Square Enix hasn’t been able to properly tell the fans anything in regards to Type-0. That became especially evident when we received Square Enix’s official press release for the game, confirming the title was on its way to both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. At the same time, a post was made on the PlayStation Blog by a Square Enix representative to indicate it was instead coming to PlayStation Vita, which sadly was a mistake soon amended.

Fans were confused and outraged – something I don’t really blame them for. After all, it was them through the efforts of campaigns such as Operation Suzaku and the more recent #JRPGVITA that helped catapult Type-0 to both Sony and Square Enix’s attention. Slighted Vita owners have taken to social media to voice their concerns, yet Square Enix has remained silent. The lack of response unfortunately continues to muddle the message of what should have been an exciting announcement. Is there hope for a Vita release? Perhaps, but it’s up to Square Enix to come clean. After all, this is still a remastered PSP game we’re talking about.

For those who anticipated the announcement of Type-0 HD there’s still plenty to be excited about – I’m just waiting to see it. If the game is far out, just let us know! Or show us some real gameplay footage rather than leaving people to endless speculation. It’s obvious that Final Fantasy XV is being strung along with Type-0 as a distraction to make up for the immediate future, but whether that’s the right decision for the franchise continuing into the new generation remains to be seen.

Square-Enix has an shamelessly embarrassing record for its inability to please fans when it comes to releasing adequate information about the games that matter the most for years: Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts III.

    Oooo too many big words

dumb it down: square enix sucks.

  • Ryan Tessier

I agree 100% sadly. I am looking forward to the remake but even after the announcement, I was hoping to see…something about the project. I have slim hopes we will get this anytime soon.

  • Michieie

I agree with that tidbit about the translation group. Announcing the game right after they ended the translating patch is kind of insulting. It’s really frustrating having to do things by ourselves because SE refuses to listen to its costumers.

  • Samsara09

What if SE pays them to use their translation?Would that be insulting?

  • Samsara09

Well,if they didn’t announce the game, fans would bitch that they are being ignored. If they announce it,it is a smokescreen,a decoy for XV.Also, not wanting to show something is different than not having anything. But I agree with you on some aspects. Is this game just a HD remaster…or is it really a remake.

Type 0 may have lots and lots of content for a PSP game. But,for a PS4 game,it is probably pitiful.Hopefully they are adding more content to it.

  • Alexis Crockett

I think so, because they’re basically buying the hard work those people did, and making it seem like “we really care, look what we did for you”.

Especially because the reason they did the fan translation in the first place was because of Square refusal to do it themselves.

That would be like someone refusing to help with a school project, but once the project is done, they come up and glue the last piece and are like “LOOK AT THIS AWESOME PROJECT I DID”.

  • Alexis Crockett

tl;dr square is covering their butts with a type-0 case with placeholder art on it

  • Samsara09

    http://www.polygon.com/2014/6/18/5820824/indies-third-party-games-are-vitas-focus-moving-forward

Something tells me we should be happy this game is not in the vita. Now,it will have a chance to shine,as it deserves. And personally,I hate little screens and clunky controls.

  • Somber

It’s SE’s fault that FF couldn’t get proper recognition. They shouldn’t keep us in the dark. We have been faithful all the time but they didn’t. They better not repeat the history itself. Still, I’m pretty excited for both FF XV and Type-0 HD.

  • Samsara09

Well, this is a win win for everyone. The guys who did the translation will get the credits and their work will be ¨THE official translation,no longer a pet project or an illegal hack.Quite a honor,I would say,and I doubt they expected something like this. They will also be payed handsomely…

and we will get this game earlier.Of course, this is if Square intends to use their job.

  • Alexis Crockett

I think the biggest problem from all this was really the hard work the translation team did. Square should give the translation team *something*. Free limited edition game copies or something snazzy like that. Some sort of recognition for the hard work and talent used to do all this crap because they refused to do it themselves.

Like Nintendo should do with the Mother 3 fan translation team if they finally decide to translate Mother 3. They’re well aware of the fan translation, and they shouldn’t overlook that work they did, I don’t think. Especially because the team was willing to back down as soon as the official translations released. Same with Square.

  • Alexis Crockett

I think you’re missing the point of what I said?

  • Samsara09

A hefty sum, renown,a free copy, even a job among SE’s translators, lol. These guys better not waste this chance.

  • Samsara09

Talking about merit, since Square got the job of translating it handled to them in a plate, right?

  • Nemesis

While I do agree that Square Enix is only announcing Type-0 HD because they want to distract from FFXV’s absence, I must also disagreement with another simple fact. They’re hardly the only studio who announces projects with a logo and a screenshot. Most studios, whether movie or game, have have had projects where we’ve been kept in the dark for quite awhile between the initial announcement and first look. Oher studios do this constantly, such as Nintendo and Game Freak’s Pokemon series, as do other companies and games like Halo, StarCraft, Warcraft, etc. Hajime Tabata has also stated for a long time he’s wanted to get this game stateside and for all intents and purposes the English version has been ready to be released, it just hasn’t due to the dead PSP market. The difference really only is that Final Fantasy XV has been in development for so long that any game they announce will look like a distraction instead of just that; an announcement.

Has Final Fantasy Type-0 HD just started production? Duh. Anyone could figure that out. But does that means it’s announcement is only meant to be a distraction from Final Fantasy XV. No, there are plenty of other titles Square Enix currently have that are in need of being promoted more FFXV or Type-0 HD, because they do have official release dates and thus they are top priority at the moment, thus are likely to be more of a distraction than Type-0 HD is. Does it make it any less irritating. No, I was absolutely annoyed by the lack of news for Final Fantasy XV, but unlike most I’m not gonna get angry about it because it doesn’t surprise me. Anyone looking for new information at E3 when all evidence was that there wasn’t going to be any were kidding themselves from the start.

So is Type-0 HD a distraction, or at the least, it’s only reason for being announced? I highly doubt it, especially when announcing games but not showing anything is hardly exclusive to to Square Enix and it never will be.

  • Samsara09

Once we get in TGS,and especially once KH 2.5 and that musical “POS” gets released,we will probably get more info on this.

  • Nemesis

I think you are giving the fan translation team too much credit that Square Enix will throw out their own translation that is clearly already done, and use theirs. Especially since it’s pretty much confirmed by the voice actors who came forward and admitted that they had already done the voice work for it.

If there was not a translated script already done, that would not be possible.

  • Alexis Crockett

Taking advantage of the fact that someone might need money in order to use that person’s work as their own is pathetic.

Please tell me you honestly don’t believe for instance that buying a homeless persons artwork because ‘they need the money’ and presenting the art as your own is perfectly okay??

  • Samsara09

Yes,that is why I said if they intend to use it.But yes…if the game is getting dubbed, the script is finished….and it probably isn’t from the translators.

  • Alexis Crockett

Why are you telling *me* this?

  • Samsara09

    Well,as I thought,it is merit.Well,this is business.And I won’t repeat myself,I already explained to you what I think about this.They will be recognized,IF their translation gets used.

  • Nemesis

Because you’re the one complaining about the hard work the fan translation team went through.

  • Samsara09

Maybe they already began with this for a while back, like in 2012.SE did announce XIII,Type 0 and XV when they only had a concept and a “shining early trailer” for each….but I think they learned their lesson.

  • Alexis Crockett

I never said that “Square Enix will throw out their own translation that is clearly already done, and use theirs”. I was responding to that one guys scenario that ‘What if Square pays to use their translation?’ The operating phrase there is “WHAT IF”. Do you not understand what ‘what if’ means?

  • Alexis Crockett

I know it’s unrelated, but can you PLEASE put spaces after your commas and periods? It’s really hard to for me to understand what you’re saying sometimes because it gets jumbled in my head since it’s connected lol

  • Dimitri Theodosakis

Square Enix is always going keep world in dark in the end more longtime fans of Square Enix liking Boycott Studio.

  • Dimitri Theodosakis

We want Final Fantasy XV Released Worldwide by October 2015 there 2016 for Type 0 HD Remaster not other way around

  • Dimitri Theodosakis

Type 0 should be released Digital only for PSP&PS Vita back in 2012 but nope

  • Samsara09

    And it is all connected,lol.

  • Samsara09

I think you should reverse the dates.Releasing Type 0 AFTER XV would be anticlimatic, especially since XV is an evolved Type 0,so as to say, merged with improved kingdom hearts elements.

  • Alexis Crockett

No?? It’s a neurological thing, I guess. I think dyslexics and those with autism have the same issue, although I’m pretty sure I’m not dyslexic or autistic.

It’s just hard for my brain to process strings of text when they’re all smashed together the way yours are. I think it’s just annoying in general, too. That’s probably why it’s common to put spaces in the first place.

  • ElAbuelo69

C’mon Nova Crystallis, you’re usually neutral and not sensasionalist. That’s why I love your site 🙁

Have you ever heard of the word “politeness”? And no, I was not replying to you, I was replying to the other guy and it sent it to you instead. So maybe I was also rude, but you really think that being rude back and being an ass to say “Do you not know what ‘what if’ means” when clearly I’m saying it’s not gonna happen even with that scenario, is actually going to do anything other than get rudeness right back at you?

  • Alexis Crockett

You’re kind of supposed to read an entire article through before you comment on it, though. Shouldn’t matter how far down the disclaimer is because you should’ve read it all the way down to the end anyways.

  • Nemesis

Also, I don’t care about what else you have to say.

  • Alexis Crockett

I honestly don’t care if you’re rude back to me lol

If what someone said to me on the internet honestly affected me that much I wouldn’t have replied in the first place.

  • Alexis Crockett

Implying I ever cared what YOU said?

  • ElAbuelo69

You really expect the average Joe to do so? Proof they don’t: http://gawker.com/npr-pulled-a-brilliant-april-fools-prank-on-people-who-1557745710

  • Nemesis

Yes, which is why I believe this article is jumping to conclusions about why they’re announcing this game and being judgmental based on nothing but what they believe SE is doing. And like another person has said, that’s highly sensationalist and not neutral and not why this site is such a good source of information.

  • Alexis Crockett

All you’re doing by saying that is proving you’re being as ignorant as they are?

  • Guest

    You replied, didn’t ya?

  • Alexis Crockett

Are you replying to him or me? Man, do you even know how to use this thing?
EDIT: Comments don’t delete here, friend. They only go anonymous.

  • Nemesis

Ya replied, didn’t ya? Clearly you wanted to prove something.

Either way, you are jumping to conclusions about SE still and I read your other comment. And as I said in my own, that’s not how video game companies work. They are first and foremost a business and whether they are meant as distractions or not is in the end irrelevant.

  • ElAbuelo69

Nope, proving this site is being sensationalist and click-baiter.

  • Alexis Crockett

Also proving that you aren’t being intelligent enough to not fall for it.
Man, what’s up with the people here today?

  • ElAbuelo69

You are directing the discussion towards me. Whether I’m smart or the stupidest person in the world has no place in this discussion.

The matter being discussed is the website and this article being out of place, specially for a place with such a good reputation.

  • Guest

They have a point. Yes, this is an opinion article and not meant to be neutral, but at the same time the only way you’d know that is if you read through the entire thing and there’s the problem. Not everyone wants to read an opinion article. I for one thought this was actually an official statement that was being reported instead of the opinions of the author and while they make excellent points, shouldn’t you point out that it is an opinion based article on the link to the page instead of just at the bottom of it? Or instead of at the bottom, put it at the top of the page, that way it’ll be read and people who don’t appreciate what they consider sensationalist can know to stay away since they are now aware it might not be content that they like.

  • Andrew Ip

Keywords are just keywords. Front page exposition is for almost everything we post here at Nova Crystallis, this opinion article is treated no differently than most of our posts. This opinion piece is not featured by any means, and the attached image clearly states that it is an opinion piece.

  • Nemesis

If it’s deleted, or gone anonymous, than that means the person no long needs to have what they said there.

And even still, it might be hard to believe, but not everyone might know that, because not everyone has no life like you do and know that stuff.

  • Nemesis

This comment is not needed because I saw that you have changed it to say “OPINION” on the page image. And thus what I have posted is irrelevant now.

  • ElAbuelo69

The attached image you just changed…lol

    Nice tho

  • Alexis Crockett

Other people’s ignorance isn’t the site’s problem. They’ve done what they’ve had to.

  • Alexis Crockett

“Also, I don’t care about what else you have to say”, Indeed. Clearly, YOU want to prove something.

I was never talking about their ‘distractions’ (what the the article was about), what the other user and I were discussing was something different entirely.

If you’re going to jump into someone’s discussion, at least read all of the discussion so you don’t sound like an idiot. That’s honestly all I’m going to say. Tolerating you isn’t really funny anymore.

  • Alexis Crockett

    lmao

  • player1

I for one am glad the game is finally being released over here. So far SE have been doing the right things to win back fans, like Microsoft did at E3 this year, so I have to cut them a bit of slack. I don’t think the announcement of Type-0 HD just a few days after the fan translation was a coincidence. I’m playing the fan translation now and I am really enjoying this game. I will buy the HD version when it is released and I’ve read good news about the mobile game Agito, so I am interested in that as well. But yeah, I agree with you that the game could have been treated/presented with a bit more of that great SE CG trailer fan fare they do for every other game.

  • Somber

Still better than almost majority of gaming sites.

  • ElAbuelo69

Indeed, that’s why we must be vocal about it and keep the quality up. See? They changed the image to clearly say OPINION now. I am really grateful for that. I may sound like a nitpicky grandpa but I just really like this site.

  • Sora96

X/X-2 HD Remaster took so long but they LOST THE ORIGINAL ASSETS.

  • Wazi the pa

I’m glad either way that Type-0 is coming to west and remastered in HD. It was obvious they are releasing the game to buy themselves more time to develop Kingdom Hearts III and Final Fantasy XV but Type-0 is a game worth to get excited and to tell you the truth, its better than sitting in the dark and doing nothing.

  • Spencer Pressly

Losing assets in an HD collection really doesn’t affect development time. All the best KH developments are done by taking a retail disc and porting over the game to a new system. Bluepoint games of MGS hd and GoW hd collection fame does this everytime.

  • waku waku

Dear Spencer, to you I say, “Numquam ponenda est pluralitas sine necessitate.” I hope that you will consider this in your future articles. With careful regards to this philosophy, I can say that I do not agree with you.

  • Spencer Pressly

Hey everyone I didn’t want to come off as sensational or anything. While I also love a site that stays neutrals with new stories, I thought this might be a good way for all of you to get to know me a bit more. Sorry if it also wasn’t apparent from the get go this was an opinion piece. Still I hope you all got something out of this!

  • waku waku

This site does news articles well. It’s rare to find sites like this, so kudos to you guys for keeping with that stance.

  • stealth20k

    I agree and disagree

  • Sothe Zephyr

I agree but i still really dont care if it is a distraction….I loved Type-0 sooooooooo much that im actually happy that XV is being covered up by this. See, i know what Type-0 is like, i love it, one of the best FF games imo. Idk anything about XV…..i want more than anything to play Type-0 in full english on my beautiful XB1 and then when this is all over, watch all XV news flood in. Oh Type-0……….please do hurry to me <3 lol

  • Zerox20

We are still working on how best to post items like this. Having opinion pieces and editorials always brings a new dynamic to the site. Its why the image was adjusted to make it a bit more clear etc.

  • Nemesis

Even with that in mind, it doesn’t change a simple fact that a few people have pointed out. That being that there is no way to actually prove that this is just a distraction. As I pointed out, Square Enix is not the only company to announce a game with little more than a title and a screenshot. As I pointed out in my original post, the recent announcement of Pokemon Omega Ruby & Pokemon Alpha Sapphire. When these games were announced, only the names and boxart were revealed at announcement. With a short teaser following shortly after as well, but no information had been announced aside from those short teasers. It was not until several days later that more information was revealed. And this is very likely what is going on with Final Fantasy Type-0 HD, because that’s what it’s like with every game.

  • Sora96

KH? HD 1.5 ReMIX had the exact same problem, they begun it’s development before even X HD Remaster and it took them nearly about two and half years.

I recall Square Enix stating something back in 2010 about HD remasters saying doing it for FINAL FANTASY in particular is harder than say God of War because of all the characters.

  • Andrew Ip

How do you guys feel about a PSP “HD Remake/Remaster”?
Considering it was a PSP exclusive game, I highly doubt the game assets are very high quality to begin with, so I’m thinking they’re pretty much building all assets from scratch and just using the core engine/gameplay code.

  • Noneofyourbusiness

I have Asperger’s Syndrome and can read those sentences fine, but autism is a spectrum and I’m at the high-functioning end, so maybe that’s the case for others.

  • Wazi the pa

Its only just one person shouting out their opinion, its nothing big. Plus it brings in a conversation for us to join and that just makes the community even better.

  • Skye

In my opinion, I would prefer playing Agito/Type-0 before FFXV because I want SE to make the best game possible, and it would be a perfect way to end an Epic Fabula Nova Crystallis Series if FFXV releases after Type-0. If FFXV gets released in 2016, I would be okay with that.

  • Mike Nieto

Yeah it’s clear that the announcement was not ready yet. The negative feedback they got for th elack of XV forced them to announce Type-0. But it kind of backfired because of the Vita issue.

  • Sothe Zephyr

It is his opinion. Respect it. He has a right to everything he said and you know what? He is right. Besides it is his/their site, they can write and assume and do w/e they/he pleases 😀

  • CokaineCowboy

It’s typical of the Japanese to announce what they’re working on and then…maybe start development a couple months after. This doesn’t excuse SE keeping us on hold for 8+ years with vague promises that it will show at some event. If they weren’t going to commit to a proper marketing campaign then wasn’t it pointless showing it at E3 2013? They’ve lost all the momentum they had.

  • Squeeeenix really need to stop announcing games they haven’t even started yet…

  • waku waku

I am respecting him. Just offering a little constructive criticism is all. I realise that I can sometimes sound really harsh, but I mean no ill intent.

  • Slickyslacker

It is a gift. The fact that it may not be seen until after XV i

  • I’m not sure. I’m glad about Type-0 HD, and I prefer my games on home systems, but…. I still wanted 15 more. And I forgot about all those people petitioning for the game on PSP or Vita. It really is kinda a slap in the face to ignore them and just pop it on the two newest systems that most people haven’t bought yet. Even though I did (but mostly hoping for NEW RPGs on it… which will only be DA Inquisition for now).

  • Slickyslacker

The Almighty Jebus has a wonderful point.

  • LukesAlike

    I’m still hooting for it.

  • Michieie

    >implying

That would only make it more insulting, getting money for something you offered for free out of good will/love for the thing. Besides, SE already has VAs which means they must have their own script, too.

  • I agree with this article. I believe this a distraction… A good one by the way. I will hopefuly play it anyway even though I think it may take a long time untill it comes out.

  • Sapientia

If I’m not mistaken, Square Enix created the game in the first place, didn’t they?

  • Alexis Crockett

So if you spent months on end translating dialogue after dialogue of a game and then finally published all that hard work, and Square’s like “haha well I own the game you translated so I’ll just take this” and presented the work as their own (getting praise and money from YOUR work), you’d be okay with it?

  • Krijn van Alten

Come on. They always told us they want to bring it here. The real problem were the disappointing Vita sales. I think the real distraction is that stupid mobile game: VII g-bike. Misleading fans by saying that they might make more VII related if we buy that phone game. Never I my entire life.

  • Krijn van Alten

When did they do that then? Announcing a game which is even unknown to them? I think you mean a game who isn’t in full production yet.

  • Krijn van Alten

Forget Type 0. VII G-Bike is the real distraction here. Giving hits that they might give us more VII related if we buy that rubbish. But we all know that the are never gonna give us that remake we want.

  • Krijn van Alten

PSP? You must be joking right? Shipment of the PSP to America ended in January 2014.

  • Krijn van Alten

    Explain the agreement side.

  • Krijn van Alten

Very unlikely that is doing to happen. Hashimoto said it himself before the E3: XV has the priority right now. And according to the fact that there was no type-0 HD trailer strongly suggests that they are just in the beginning of the process. So Its very likely that they will release XV somewhere in 2015 (20XV!) and after that type-0 HD.

  • Krijn van Alten

And that where two games. So I don’t think this will take almost 3 years.

  • Krijn van Alten

In the first place: they did not release anything, they announced something. They always said that they want to release it the the west anyway, so its not that much of a surprise to me. The real distraction in my opinion is VII G-Bike. No one ever ask for a game like that. God, I can’t wait until 2017 when they stop with all this VII nonsense and start to move on!

  • Krijn van Alten

Still there is some truth in your words. This is not a article Nova Crystallis worthy, this is merely speculation.

  • Daniel Masterson

you cant buy whats free. G bike = free.

  • Krijn van Alten

Even if they gave me money to play it I wouldn´t do it.

  • Daniel Masterson

    g-bike is free.

  • Krijn van Alten

Even they gave me money to play it I would not touch this game.

  • stevenm281

it does looks like an awesome racing game tho!

I really don’t get the hate. If this would come to consoles as a little digital game, I would definitely get it.

  • I just read this article and, despite of it being proven wrong in the course of time (considering the game’s producer came out and said it’s near 80% complete and will be out in less than a year’s time), there was no way for the writer to know that. So I’ll go based on the speculations as well.

Even if Type-0 is to be released as a sort of “scapegoat” for XV, I would have absolutely no problem with that, for two reasons.

    1) Because Type-0 is a game that I have only played as an imported Japanese demo that I couldn’t make out. I only played it for 10 minutes and I was frustrated that I didn’t understand anything that was going on because it looked and felt awesome to play! I have spent countless days waiting for any form of news on a localization and now that it’s here (and on next-gen consoles nonetheless!), I’m just as excited as I am about XV!

    2) Because if it means more time for XV, then in the end it means they want to deliver us the best, greatest possible FF experience ever made! I cannot possibly imagine Square-Enix and Tetsuya Nomura spending nearly a decade on a game and that game not being near perfection. It might even take another couple of years (yes I know, the wait is killing us), but what they have in store for when this megaton releases will probably end up putting all COD’s, Witcher’s and Destinies to shame!

So yeah, if I get to play Type-0 HD, I don’t really mind waiting until late ’15-early ’16 to play XV. Great times ahead!!
