Tabata details new Final Fantasy XV gameplay details, town and character footage at Jump Festa 2015

Final Fantasy XV director Hajime Tabata took the stage this evening to discuss the latest developments behind Square Enix’s upcoming flagship game, taking time to answer common questions as well as showing off a bit of new in-development footage in his latest Active Time Report.

Tabata began his XV segment by confirming the giant seen in the trailers is in fact Titan – a classic Final Fantasy summoned beast. Initially the team had planned for Titan to be in the upcoming Duscae demo, but scrapped that idea as Titan is too integral to the main story. A different summon, however, will appear in its place. Summons will play an important role in FFXV and players will eventually be able to use them as well.

The game world of XV is aiming to be seamless. Entering and leaving towns will be seamless and Tabata is hoping everything else will eventually be too. The town from the trailer won’t actually be in the demo although more information will be released about that particular location in due time. Much like towns of Final Fantasys past, you’ll be able to do your shopping here and sleep in hotels.

We also learned that Cor Leonis is still in the game. He’ll actually join up with Noctis and friends at some point as a guest party member, although he won’t be available all the time. Tabata teases even more guest character appearances down the line as well.

Of interest, the game seems to stress a particular important on the camping system. In previous FF games, camping was most definitely a thing but in XV the team seems to have taken things to the next level. For example, if you miss out on rest you will lose the ability to use certain buffs. Lack of sleep also prevents you from leveling to some extent. Noctis himself is young, though, so he can get by with out three days without rest. Currently in the game, about 60 minutes in the real world represents an full day/night cycle.

Aside from Noctis’ signature car, players can travel the world by train. You’ll actually be able to explore the inside of the trains too as you move around.

Moving on, Tabata touched on the reveal of new female character Cidney, who is a mechanic in the game more connected to gameplay rather than the game’s actual story. She’ll be supporting you on your adventure. Other gameplay notes include magic and the idea that magic hasn’t been at the forefront of the team’s priorities right now. First, they are working on the base systems and magic will be plugged in after that.

Tabata also confirmed that Insomnia is actually the capital city of Lucis, the name seen before in old trailers and on the car’s license plate. A new video was shown of Noctis and friends driving through the town mentioned above before getting out to explore. Using a “Dog Cam” featuring a dog to explore more of the town, Square Enix showed a few areas which were unfinished with no textures and exposed wireframe, but were shown to give fans an idea of the scope of the place. There are larger towns than the one shown off too.

Rounding out the presentation, fans were surprised with the news that Episode Duscae will come packed with dual audio. That is, you’ll be able to select either Japanese or English voices whenever it launches digitally. Tabata hopes to bring that feature into the retail release, although game file size could be an issue. The Episode Duscae demo will come limited with first edition copies of Final Fantasy Type-0 HD. The decision for that to happen came some time between the announcement of the demo and present day, so as to make up for it Tabata would like to offer the tech demo shown at Tokyo Game Show free of charge for fans who can’t purchase Type-0 straight away. This isn’t necessarily an official announcement, but he’d like to add more content to it and release it some time after Duscae.
