Final Fantasy XV has been in the works for the better part of a decade. While it started its life as Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Square Enix re-purposed the game as a mainline title for the new generation of consoles following E3 2013. Now, we’re the better part of a month out from getting hands on with FFXV’s demo – a portion of the game fans will have access to while they continue to wait for the full thing. Square Enix seems to be back on track with consistent updates and information, but things weren’t always as grand as they now seem.

A new video created by fan Taylor Hoyt chronicles the game’s journey starting from 2006 through present today, highlighting as much detail as possible behind its troubled development cycle. Taylor spent the better part of the last few months researching and creating this retrospective and the result is educational for new fans as well as those who’ve followed FFXV since its conception.
