Final Fantasy XIV's tribute to David Bowie in The Antitower

One of the new four-player dungeons added in Final Fantasy XIV’s Patch 3.2 “The Gears of Change” is The Antitower, an enigmatic and topside-down trip towards the Aetherial Sea buried in the heart of the realm. Unlocked via the main scenario, the Warrior of Light descends the tower in search of a friend…

In the video below, Erren Van Duine and myself plumb its depths with the help of our fellow Eorzean adventurers:

While the Antitower is home to eerily beautiful scenery and music, it’s also chock full of fun references to the Final Fantasy series and pop culture alike. Our first boss encounter against the gigantic singing frog Zuro Roggo (notice Frog Song from Final Fantasy games’ past), and drops lyrical homage to 1979’s The Muppets Movie – specifically Kermit the Frog’s performance of The Rainbow Connection. It’s not easy being green – especially not this frog.

Mammet Vikings and Magi (two of Final Fantasy III’s unique jobs) are ecnountered – be mindful of their cheeky limit breaks they won’t hesitate to send your way. The final boss, Calcabrina, is a horrifyingly creepy callback to the boss of the same name in Final Fantasy IV. In some versions you might remember her as “Calcobrena”. Welcome to the dollhouse!

Back up a bit to the second boss, a spriggan named Ziggy. He’s Final Fantasy XIV’s tribute to David Bowie, the legendary blackstar that passed away earlier this year at the age of 69.

Spriggans are classified in Eorzean taxonomy as “soulkin” and are rarely seen without precious stones or gems at their side. They’re small, incessantly grinning, and have wild black fur (like some cat from Japan). Likely sharing kinship with Biggy, another spriggan found in the Copperbell Mines, Ziggy has also fancied himself a rather large stone (or in this case, Stardust).
