  • All we really needed that whole event was the date for the game, the release of the demo, the movie and mini-series, and trailer. That’s it.
All the shmoozing and net-meme jokes and Game of Throne/Breaking Bad refs….. OBNOXIOUS.
I want this game and FF7R to be great. But I wanna hurry up and get to FF16 so we can go back to ninja and knights and wizards and demons. No more of this stuff. I don’t want XV to end up hated like 13. And itemized magic and bad camera angles isn’t helping.

The new control scheme for the game (as it appears in the Platinum Demo at least) feels awful to me. It was really bothering me on my first few play-throughs. I went back to Duscae 2.0, and man did that feel way better, even though that set up was far from perfect. While the new set-up looks really simple and elegant when laid out on the HUD, and is indeed simpler in terms of button functions, its simpler at the cost of feeling wonky to the seasoned gamer IMO/E. Thankfully I was able to use PS4’s remapping feature to fix this. At first I thought simply reversing the circle and square functions would be enough, as it initially felt most annoying to me to attack with circle as opposed to the more universal square button, I then realized this was far from the real problem. I ended up re-mapping the guard/dodge button to L1, made R1 the semi-lock on, and left circle with functionless R1 key. This allows you far easier access to the d-pad and to the attack button, while also guarding AND/OR Zelda targeting an enemy. You’d think play tests would have shown this to be a much more fluid feeling set-up (one they already had mostly right in Duscae).

In any case, I really hope they allow in game multiple control set-ups and/or custom button mapping in the final game. Using my system’s functions to override a mandatory bad control scheme is really less than ideal, unacceptable even.

  • Artemis_Polara

I dunno, I got used to the new controls after about thirty minutes of fighting the Iron Giant again and again. Plus finding the Shield and Shuriken was a nice touch to experiment. I do wish they made it so you could replenish your fire spell though. Or is there one and I didn’t find it?

  • grapes9h5

There is a replenish in one of the far corners of the Citadel map.

Yeah I got “used” to the new controls to, but I wasn’t enjoying it, and it felt like it was making me fight worse. Re-mapping made it feel way better. Still, the controls feel a bit unresponsive. Hopefully that’s merely a demo thing.

  • Artemis_Polara

I guess to each his own, once I picked up on the strategies, it felt pretty easy and smooth. But to be fair we’re literally being tossed into a battle with no tutorial and real practice.
It did take me a little while to get the aerial combat to work properly and figure out how to do it as I pleased.

  • grapes9h5

Yeah I mean I do find the lack of explanations to be a big factor, but there is some reward to self-discovery. My biggest issues now are that there doesn’t seem to be a way to cancel a magic throw once you initiate the aiming. That’s a bummer cause its pretty easy to do it by accident. And you also weirdly limited in your ability to move while you aim. Again, its quite possible this will all be fixed before the real game arrives. Tabata and his team we know do pay attention to player and fan feedback, and they take it seriously.

  • Artemis_Polara

I didn’t use fire much obviously since my stupid-ness didn’t know I could replenish it so I was more focused on the uses of each weapon.
Sword: Obviously your main way of using warp points and can do aerial combat. Your best escape option when the giant is using his gravity field thingy.
Buster Sword: Heavy damage, slow but surprising amount of cancel time and directions allow for Tempest, brave slash, a charge attack and maybe one other type of attack.
Shield: blocks most moves, can stun the Iron Giant when timed properly, and isn’t the best for warping.
Shuriken: ranged, burns MP, can use warp points, good for interrupting and breaking the Iron Giant’s stance mid combo. Can do lots of ranged moves in mid air.
At least that’s my impressions so far of them.

  • grapes9h5

Yeah I think you’re dead on. Thanks for those descriptions.

  • Noctis

    https://forum.finalfantasyxv.com/discussion/1340/guard-and-attack-issue-command-mapping#latest

This is a forum specific for telling the devs our concerns. This link is my concern about defense and attack just as you said check it out!

  • Artemis_Polara

I put a video of me trying them all out on youtube so I’ll leave that little bit here:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_rW-LqPiGU
I really like the night time battle with rain, it just feels cool to me.
Dunno what the hell happened though when I tried to warp strike with the Shuriken though. It happens most times.

  • grapes9h5

    Thanks!!

  • grapes9h5

    Night with rain looks amazing

  • Artemis_Polara

After some rewatching of some of my footage. I believe you can choose when your Warp strike Shuriken teleports you. Basically hold it down and it’ll go passed the target or let go early and you’ll go part of the way.

  • what shield and shuriken? I had 399 crystals and never unlocked it.

  • I guess the idea with the new controls is you can hit a whole combo with one weapons or switch to any of 4 weapons at any time.

  • Magic being an item and having to find fire like it’s a gernade is stupid. That’s my beef with magic in XV now.

  • Iron Giant fight was kinda amazing. There’s a lot hidden tactics and skill you can use.

  • Will they even listen at this point? I mean it’s only months away.

  • what happens if you replay Platinum Demo again? Does it add to what you did or just start over?

  • Artemis_Polara

I think you only need 200-300 or so but they’re in the final area where you fight the Iron Giant. You need to beat him the first time to unlock the Shuriken. They are on the large building right behind where you enter the area. You’ll need to use warp to get to them so you’ll need to start a battle with the Iron Giant first.
Here’s my video of them in use so you know I’m not making it up that they’re there:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_rW-LqPiGU

  • Artemis_Polara

Well yeah, each weapon has its own benefit

  • Artemis_Polara

Starts ALL over so you would have to re-unlock everything every time.

  • Thanks.
I wasn’t going all out with the demo since it was just kid Noctis and wasn’t directly gonna effect XV, but that last battle made my day. The rest of the demo looks good, but that last battle actually felt good.
Why didn’t they make MP for magic and SP for Skills. It boggles the mind how they could crap out on that.

  • Jesus Christ

I wish that Square Enix have a “You can buy Ultimate edition if you’re poor” program with 95% off discount. Not everyone is richy rich that can afford to spend about 300 dollars by Sep 30, what if we have rent to pay? >_>

  • Artemis_Polara

VIII did something similar with the draw system so I’d say stock up on magic

  • Noctis

yeah good question, my only concern is the button mapping. I think tabata said he will implement this right?

  • Artemis_Polara

I believe that was mentioned as something they would do. Also remember they said they would do another “mode” of combat where it flows differently. Not sure what that means.

  • Noctis

I wish they would just tell us this, i mean come the cat is out of the bag now

  • When’s the last time anyone helped the poor with their entertainment woes?
Not that I’m not right there with you about the $300 price. Besides, aren’t YOU in charge of miracles?

  • Artemis_Polara

You’re the main character, shouldn’t you have an inside scoop on how it works 😀

  • Noctis

wish they would just tell us a few technical things, i mean come on the cat is out of the bag now.

  • Noctis

this is a reality based on a fantasy, so no this is the world we are in.

  • ITEMIZED HIDE AND SEEK MAGIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DAMN YOU SQUARE!

  • But how can you stock up on magic. No matter which of the 4 times I tried and failed to beat FF8, I always would run outta spells in a crucial moment. Like with Ultimecia.

  • fuck that noise. I’ll just do better in the real game. I liked the demo, but only the boss battle was fun.

  • Artemis_Polara

Patience I guess? I never had an issue stocking up on spells in the game.

  • Jesus Christ

    Ahh… FF8 my fave.

  • Artemis_Polara

See? Even Jesus is fine with it. You can’t get more reassurance than that… Except maybe his dad… Hmmmmmmmmm

  • Noctis

but you could take a credit in a bank, and pay them in monthly rate 😀

    Problem solved! 😀

  • Artemis_Polara

Eh, if you wanna practice and learn, I’d say it’s worth it. I’ve done it 4 times already. Also once you’ve beat the Iron Giant, you can repeatedly fight a stronger version of him.

  • MARK MY WORDS: ITEMIZED HIDE & SEEK MAGIC WILL BE WORST THAN CHARACTER SACRIFICING TO SUMMON IN TYPE-0! FF8 THIS IS NOT!

  • Noctis

    what u mean? I don`t understand

  • Artemis_Polara

Again, I don’t see it as a big deal as long as the magic is easy to acquire

  • I did that. I practiced on the stronger version of Iron Giant. But I want a new game, constantly playing that demo like I did Descae is just a tease.

  • Squall is the only good thing to come out of FF8. That is my response to that statement, JC.

  • Artemis_Polara

Well you’ll have to wait till September like the rest of us

  • Jesus Christ

Squall is the most beautiful man. Handsome and feminine feautures. What a beautiful creature!

Oh sorry. I’m getting carried away.

  • I would get to the end of the game, at her castle and everything inside it was like a giant brick wall. No matter what I’d have to go find or make due without more magic. And I never used a strategy guide. Back then if there wasn’t a tip in a game mag’ I already had I had to come up with the tactic on the fly or keep losing. SMH. I want them to remake that game too so that next time around I can love someone in that game beyond just Squall.

  • Noctis

    mine too Jesus

  • If they mark it on the map where you can get fire or ice or thunder, cool. But if you have to search and write down where it all is, bullshit. Why can’t we get it from beating foes?

  • Artemis_Polara

Even if they did a FF7R styled remake, I can bet they would use the draw system in it still because that was one of the main features of VIII’s system. It’s like VII dropping the Materia system. (Which hopefully they won’t do)

  • Artemis_Polara

For all we know you might. We just don’t know how they’re acquired at the moment.

  • Noctis

you forgot that this is only one way to use magic, there is also ring magic and it works diefferently then this

  • Itemized magic is when instead of MP for Magic you have a finite number of a spell or element. Like a bullet or grenade. It’s like you have 5 fires. Not you have knowledge of a fire spell and can cast it with your 100 MP and it only cost 20MP to cast. See the difference? Once you can replenish with Ether anywhere you are. The other you have to find the exact spell and acquire it all over again. This is how FF8 was. You gotta stockpile “spells” since they’re just grenades or bullets. Once you run out if you don’t run back to that spot, no more for you.

  • Ring magic you only get deeper in the game. I bet at the 70% done mark. Maybe with that Magic counts as MP.

  • Artemis_Polara

You know you could draw them from the enemies as well right? Usually they carried multiple types and you could get more than one from a single enemy

  • Would all of this be nipped in the bud with MP for magic and SP for skills? Use Ether to heal MP and a tonic I guess for SP. Done and done.

  • I found that out but for some reason mid-battle I was trying to dust off foes fast rather than be killed. Remember Wendigos and how strong they are regardless of your level?

  • Artemis_Polara

Any smart adventurer prepares for combat for whatever he deals with. Normally it’s stockpiling ethers and potions. Here it’s hording your spells until you have plenty to unleash on your enemies. In VIII, it was the same, you conserve or build up a supply ahead of time. I literally don’t see a problem with that.

  • Artemis_Polara

It was all based on Squall’s level, no one else’s. Actually you could just NOT level him up by having him dead after any sections where he fights solo. Then the enemies will not scale up with you.

  • Jesus Christ

Now that we know we get the options of playing all kinda FF music on the radio in game, I blast FFVIII, IX, X, X-2, XII, XIII, all day!

  • Xervath

Great minds think alike. It’ll be mainly FFVII, VIII and IX for me, however. (assuming I have a choice in the matter at all)

  • Jesus Christ

I want to play The Promise FFXIII by the sea at nighttime. Having the bromance lying back on incline chair viewing the stars.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!! MAKE MY WISH COME TRUE LET DARKNESS FADE TO LIGHT.

Edit: No Noel’s Theme might be better.

  • I was like 13 or so. Barely had 4 RPGs under my belt.

  • No wonder Squall always ends up level 99 by the time I reach the last dungeon. See, there never tell you that stuff.

  • …dial it back. I meant he was a badass like in KH2.

  • My favorite battle system was always FF6 and 9. Everyone had their role. Everyone could do something great. And MP could be healed at inns and with items. But they never do what I want anymore and 80% of the game series I like don’t exist anymore. All I can do is hope 16 will be more my speed. But that’ll be 6 years from now most likely.

  • grapes9h5

Well my PS4 solution will at least work, but it pales in comparison to an actual in-game solution

  • grapes9h5

Maybe they mean a way to use the deck weapon combo system we had in Duscae. To be clear, my issues with the new set-up is not to do with that change. One the controller buttons are laid out “properly” IMO, the d-pad switching system is fine with me. Its probably better long term. That said, I thought the previous deck system was interesting and warranted further exploration in the full game. Who knows, maybe they do mean we can have it both ways.

  • Average Afro

I actually like this change. Using it in the demo took a little bit to get used to as you have to account for how long it’ll take to throw, but otherwise it’s pretty cool.

  • Average Afro

I didn’t play duscae for this very reason. I actually really like the controls, holding B (I’m xbox) was a bit weird at first, but then I realised it was to make it easier to switch between the weapons for a combo. The Dodge roll is a bit janky being on the same button as defend, but I think that’s because it’s not really the best way to get out of a situation. While I was playing as grown up Noctis I found myself holding x to dodge the massive things attacks, and y to get space.

I look forward to seeing the other combat system they said was around.

  • stevenm281

There could be shops that sells magic similar to 12 but instead of learning a spell, you stock spells.

  • stevenm281

it was easy to notice that the stronger he became, so did the monsters.

  • stevenm281

Or they could make a Build-Your-Own-Edition package like Car dealerships do.

You pre-order the main game and then you have a checklist of every possible bonuses and you check the ones you want, at checkout, you get a price according to your specific selection.

  • stevenm281

I totally agree, controls in Episode Duscae were much better, I hope their customization of controls in the final game is still a feature they’ll put in, Tabata mentioned this during Episode Duscae promotion.

  • stevenm281

why do you have to keep repeating this same complaint even in posts unrelated to this… we’re talking about control mechanics here.

  • stevenm281

how can you lack magic in FF8? I always had plenty of every spells.

You can harvest them on the worldmap, from enemies, and you can create them from GF abilities.

  • Nexusbark6

You don’t really use magic in that game. i mean, you can for the novelty but like most FF games, it gets more ineffective the more you progress. Physical attacks/limits > all. (Meltdown was great but again, it was to supplement physical attacks.) Rinoa’s magic berserk limit with meteor was quite good.

FF8 stock worked best by visiting the islands of hell/heaven with encounter none set. Thirty mins work nets 100 of all the best spells. Junction to strength and HP then spirit and defence, hold X button to win or use mad rush and go make some tea. Aura can speed things up. Magic was just a slower and less efficient way to see 9999 flash up on your screen. It’s helpful for earlier in the games but SE struggle to balance magic and summons in endgame as damage incentives, it’s usually only useful as support. :O

  • Xervath

When inclined under the stars I’ll take FFIX’s ‘Memoria’ or ‘Terra’, and I wanna drive through the city and have FFVIII’s ‘Under her control’ add to the atmos.

Here’s to hoping it can become a reality!

  • D.3ND

Endless possibilities but I wonder, would it be the originals soundtrack or a recent version. I want to play One Winged Angel from Advent Children OST then one from the FFVII OST.

  • stevenm281

According to an interview with GameSpot, Hajime Tabata mentioned that the parts where Noctis and co. joined Luna and fought alonside her were removed…

Do anyone else have further information on this matter?

  • Dongmatteezzy

yeah right I saw that part……but in the previous interviews, he said that WE or NOCTIS and THE GANG will join her battle soooo………I don’t know but I’m still hoping she will be a guest party member at some point.

  • stevenm281

well the new interview was for Uncovered so, I guess its the latest development decision.

I hope he’ll eventually explain why since they put so much emphasis in the past to tell the players that we would join her on a few occasions in the game, that she was a badass.

I hope we get more than just Cor as a guest party member…

  • Jesus Christ

    amma still need a discount.

  • Jesus Christ

what was their rationale for the removal?

  • Maybe if I re-played the game as the smarter more intel gathering gamer I am now I’d have a better time. Maybe if they HD remaster it on PS4 or 3.

  • I was way younger back then, I farmed spells but tough battles forced me to use them up.

  • It was the only bad side to the Uncovered event gameplay wise, that’s why.
Besides it was mostly a joke put in all caps as if yelled to the heavens while shaking my fist like in a comedy.

  • Not when you’re 12 or 14.

  • I just like to see spells be a part of them, not thrown like a bomb like it was in the Platinum demo.

  • To each their own. I didn’t like it. It’s the only gameplay part I don’t like. But I guess it’s too late now. Gonna have to suffer thru it till they give us the rings that make magic better in the game. That or hope for better with 16.

  • grapes9h5

Fair points, but I think all the defensive maneuvers being easily accessible is key.

  • stevenm281

that’s why I never used my spells, I only Cast magic from drawing it of an enemy I’m fighting.

  • stevenm281

you jump to cancel your magic throw while you’re still aiming.

  • CallMeGod

Oh my if this is true and you can’t join her in battle anymore is very disappointing. All this backtracking of Tabata just make me wondering how FF15 would had turn out if Tetsuya Numora was still director considering I really like the idea of FFVersus more than all the changes Tabata had made since he became director.

  • CallMeGod

I agree that was a big reason why I never finish beating FF8 because of the draw system. Just feel so dumb to me that I had to waste my time to draw magic from monster and use it to level up etc. Didn’t even understand how the system work until I replay it a second time, but couldn’t finish it at all even though the story was interesting enough.

  • noctcaelum

I’ll be disappointed if this is true.i was looking forward to a chain attack with her.though if not I hope I could atleast see her stab something with that trident of hers.

  • If they do a sequel that focuses on Squall again, I’d play it. But like most FFs from the past they get at one and done and never any follow up or improvement. So yeah, 4 tries to beat it, gave up and moved on. That’ll be my closing thoughts on the game forever since it’ll never be presented in any better way.

  • Average Afro

To me it feels like it is. I’m not sure what games I’m ever played where Square/X isn’t the guard button. Maybe a couple fighting games? I think the closest game I’ve played to this is defo KH, and in that Square was the guard button, which is probably why I don’t have a problem with it.

I’m totally with you though, if they make is so we can map our own controls. That’d be cool, there’s nothing worse than being pulled out of the game because of an odd control scheme. I had this same problem with the Witcher 3.

  • Average Afro

Don’t let the new magic system ruin the whole game for you. You don’t eve need to use it according to what we’ve seen so far. I don’t think we’ll be seeing 16 very soon.

  • daveguitar

Are you saying that FFVIII was kinda hard? xDD

I think it was the easiest game to level up and be the boss from the beginning. The second time I played the game I got the level 70 in the Dollet comunication tower and I could use Firaga, etc. So I didn’t have to worry to kill enemies instead of drawing magic.

I loved the draw magic system, still prefer the materia and MP usage for it, but loved it anyway. Was different and that’s it.

  • daveguitar

I’m agree that I prefer the controls of Duscae, but I guess we need to get used to it.. maybe. xD
What’s the problem with The Witcher 3? I prefer the controls of TW3 than Platinum Demo.

  • At the age i was yes it was hard. I was a kid. And Ultimecia castle was just nit fun at all.

  • IFor bosses i bet you eill need it. And Against a malboro or behemoth just physical stuff would take forever. I hope from now on all characters can use magic like in past more fantasy games.

  • daveguitar

Dunno how old were you but I was 12, also a lil kid. I think you should play again, I think you would like it more 🙂
Well.. maybe you think the gameplay is kinda slow now (it is for me, but still is my second favourite FF) 😀

  • How much are they gonna take out of this game. Why do they keep cutting the actiony parts?

  • Didnt want to animate her fighting style likely. Just like how no one else can do anything except skills and items.

  • I dont think turn based combat is slow thats why i liked rpgs to begin with. That and levels and shops and story. Most games do none of that. Its just shoot kill finish game.

  • daveguitar

RPGs are my favourite kind of games. Final fantasy saga is my favourite one. And VII is my favourite game of all time followed by VIII.
I love turn base combat but I prefer sth a little more dynamic nowadays cause to me right now playing FFVII feels slow.. but that’s me. And that doesn’t mean it has to be “just shoot kill finish game”.
And I bet FFXV won’t be like that.

  • XV wont. But lots of rpg devs are giving up on epic story and long games for quick action with online or replay value.

  • daveguitar

    Yep, unfortunately. It’s a shame.

  • Shami

Interesting bit : did anyone else noticed a young Noctis sitting next to older Noctis in the car
You can see that on English version of the trailer at 1:28 just look at the back seat

  • •december

It looked like a girl at first,
But it could possibly be Young Noctis

  • alexis

It was a girl; the way the hair is, it’s like a bob hairstyle. And she’s sitting too high up to be little Noctis, she sits at Noctis’s level.

And, the outfit looks as if it belongs to a woman (sleeveless, with armwarmers type thing).

  • Dongmatteezzy

It’s a girl…..sleeveless and short spikey hair……WHO IS THAT!? another character?
