NieR: Automata artwork and gameplay revealed, new characters detailed

Update: The NieR Automata character introduction video has now officially been released by Square Enix Japan.

Square Enix has revealed two new characters from NieR: Automata along with never before seen artwork by Akihiko Yoshida following today’s NieR Music Concert and Talk Live event.

2B (pictured above) – who we’ve known since the game’s reveal – is joined by two other androids:

YoRHa No. 9 Type S, or 9S, is described as kind but somewhat childish. Relatively speaking, he’s too emotional and friendly for a YoRHa unit. 9S specializes in mission researching and is greatly skilled in intelligence gathering through hacking. He’s voiced by Natsuki Hanae.

The second character revealed is A2, or YoRHa Type A N0. 2. This android was made operational way before the 2B and 9S models were produced. She’s described as a “vortex of hate from the past” and doesn’t talk much. As a result she always acts independently. A2 is considered a prototype of the YoRHa series and heavily focuses on melee attacks. She’s voiced by Ayaka Suwa.

Additionally, snippets of gameplay were shown off during a live demonstration at the event where the staff confirmed they’re aiming for 1080p resolution at 60 frames per second. The videos below showcase 9S and 2B battling against various enemy types in what looks to be an old abandoned warehouse of sorts. Credit to xenosaga7 for capturing and uploading the new footage.
