Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV Japanese voice cast revealed, new footage By Erren Van Duine on May 30, 2016 at 4:22 PM

Square Enix has revealed a partial Japanese cast alongside new footage for the upcoming Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV companion film due out in theaters July 9.

Gou Ayano will be providing the voice for Nyx Ulric, the protagonist of Kingsglaive, alongside Shiori Kutsuna as Lunafreya Nox Fleuret. Square Enix also revealed Tsutomu Isobe as King Regis Lucis Caelum and Kouichi Yamadera as Drautos, the commander of the Kingsglaive.

Other cast members include Mitsuaki Kanuka as Libertus Ostium, Tomokazu Seki as Luche Lazarus and Ayumi Fujimura as Crowe Altius.

Unlike previous CG works, Kingsglaive will be lip synced to the English voice cast. Revealed previously, Nyx is voiced by Aaron Paul and Lunafreya by Lena Headey along with Sean Bean as King Regis.

Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV will launch in theaters in Japan on July 9. A Western release is scheduled on both blu-ray and streaming services at a later date.

  • Artemis Polara

I was hoping they would lip sync it to the english voices. 🙂

  • alexis

To be honest, this time I don’t even care about the Japanese cast 😛 (I don’t mean that in a mean way though).

The English cast is absolutely stellar, and I’m excited beyond belief that the motion capture is synced to the english voices this time around. We’re always the one getting the short end of the stick when it comes to that; it feels good to feel like the “priority” audience for once.

  • alexis

Me too 🙂 Super happy about it

  • Noctis Pendragon

It the case i think but this trailer seems like pure voice over ( you can’t hear any sound aside from the voices ) .

  • Artemis Polara

    I agree

  • stevenm281

Why do they advertise Lunafreya as Lunafrena?

  • DonquixoteDoflamingo

and these characters doesnt match Japanese voice acting becuz of their medieval style character designs

  • Yuntu

That`s the way it is directly translated from japanese into … ehm whats it called? You know the name for our letters – having a brainfart right now 😮

Like Luffy from One Piece is called Ruffy is some countries.

  • Yuntu

Feels nice, but after all those years hearing mostly japanese voiceover … well I will just stick to it.

  • stevenm281

    Latin?

Same goes with Terra/Tina, Rinoa/Linoa, Cloud/Clad, etc. (in France)

I don’t get the need to spell it differently depending on the location.

  • Dongmatteezzy

The Hell!? even the Japanese Voice Actress of Luna is different in this movie. -_- Her JapaneseVA in the game is way better than this. The low voice doesn’t suit her at all, I wonder if Lena can handle it perfectly……

  • Yuntu

Dunno ask Square and other companies why they do this.

  • alexis

What? Luna doesn’t have a voice actress in the game yet. At least, that we know of. We don’t know if Stella’s VA from the last VSXIII/first XV trailer is reprising her role, a few actors were recast with the story changes (such as Cor Leonis).

  • stevenm281

In the Uncovered Japanese trailer, we can hear the characters talk, and Luna’s voice is heard while confronting the Leviathan

  • alexis

Ohhh, I did not know there was a Japanese voice over of that one.

Hmmm, well regardless, I think it suits her better. Especially if it is a voice over of a role by Lena Headey (whose voice is a bit low).

  • stevenm281

That’s actually why I’m worried of Lena voicing Luna, I don’t think it will fit.

    They chose her for popularity.

But who knows? I’ll know for sure once we can have a glimpse of the English version.

  • alexis

Well, the facial mocap is done by Lena so I can’t see why not. But I guess that’s where it’s all chalked up to personal opinion.

I’m personally sick of the higher pitched voices, I supposed. Women have a variety of voices, yet with the exception of Lightning we’ve largely had similar pitches (in Japanese).

  • Dongmatteezzy

Yeah……..both have low voices but I hope Lena can do it more properly than this Jap.VA

  • stevenm281

in the game Luna seems to have a higher voice than in the movie, so I was expecting the movie to at least reflect that since already the face isnt really similar.

Now if not only the face is different, but the voice as well, it will feel like two different characters whom could be sisters at best.

  • Dongmatteezzy

I don’t even know why Square bothered to hire different voice actors exclusive for the movie only.

  • stevenm281

I prefer when female characters have lower voice because I usually like cold, serious, badass female.

But Luna never stroke me as such, so I always pictured her with a higher voice.

Once we hear the English VA from both the movie and game, it will be better to know what feels right and what doesn’t.

  • Jesus Christ

Don’t be surprised if the only thing good about this movie is its visual.

  • stevenm281

    Why such free nastiness?

  • Jesus Christ

    Hey gurl haaaaaaaaay!!!

No, I mean it’s just a suspicion that most of this film is fan service visual gorgeousness. Everything else is Michael Bay/Zach Synder’s quality explosives. This is based on a adventure fighting game after all, I’m sure they know how to capitalize on that more rather than story.

Y’all fanboys don’t come after me cause I already bought the CE edition, I will watch the movie. And I will criticize if I see please. Thanks.

  • stevenm281

Well, the story is taken from XV, so I’m not worried on that part.

Its not a specifically new story created for a movie (Spirits Within or Advent Children), its literally a part of FF15 completely removed from the game, so its script should be quite satisfying.

  • Jesus Christ

Nobody really know the script in its bulk or entirety yet to even know it’s good or bad. Remember, you’re from the glass half-full school of thought when it comes to FFXV things and that’s OK. I’m on the other side, I just don’t really see all that glitter as gold.

I based my preliminary judgement on how they present their trailers. It’s almost all visual. Kind of like Warcraft movie trailer minus the voice over work. It’s very visually riveting and… that’s it (for me, y’all).

These type of movies are niche. I just can’t see them winning awards for Best Animated movies because of “storyline”. They just look very pretty for the fans and at the end of the day, that’s OK… for the fans.

  • stevenm281

FF was always about visuals, but even more so since FF7 and the inclusion of CGI in their games.

I’m a sucker for visuals, being slightly superficial, vain, etc., myself.

  • When it comes to telling a compelling story, I would have a lot more faith in Nozue and Nojima than any of the ones you just mentioned. Or anyone else in Hollywood for that matter, judging from the recent garbage that’s been coming out of the industry.

  • I’ve said this before, but wtf is wrong with Luna’s face?? She looks like a damn bird! Her animation is horrendous and has nothing to do with the gorgeous girl we’ve seen in the trailers of the game.

  • Jesus Christ

Aye, you have to admit I acknowledge those things as well. I, too, am a sucker for visuals (to some extent). I’m just stating an observation an opinion that this movie is mostly all about… visual appeal. Ever since this movie was announced. I see news article featured on Yahoo News and the highlight that they focus on is how “stupidly real” the visuals are. And, well, I don’t blame them. And then that is it.

In Advent Children, it’s like visual, then fight scene (fan service), then visual, then fight scene (fan service), over and over. That movie is so niche, it was Square of Square Enix NOT to put it in theaters nationwide, it would never work (I argue).

  • stevenm281

Well its hard to judge actual content as we’ve seen no scenes in English, heard no voices whatsoever, so yeah, the only thing we saw so far is the visuals.

Not too long now as the movie comes out in July, I suspect we’ll hear something a bit before, at, or right after E3.

  • Jesus Christ

    I’m good with that. 😀

I swear. amma leave my computer for 5 hours. Come back and someone throwing major a shade at my Holiness. Ouuu I’m scared of y’all. I think I just stirred up the pot!

  • stevenm281

well, you go can in peace, it won’t be me lol

  • Jesus Christ

LOOOOOOOOOOOOL I know that. But like, you know, FFXV have minions. Where’s my Bible?

  • Jesus Christ

    But birds are beautiful!

Vote for Equality! Everyone is beautiful! Every creature is beautiful!

  • I have nothing against birds, I believe they’re some of the most majestic creatures your dad created, I just don’t get why Luna looks like one in this movie when she’s clearly a hot (human) chick in the game. It feels like someone from the character animations department was slacking off…

  • stevenm281

Cause we are beautiful! In every single way! Words can’t bring me down!!!! Nooo!
So don’t you bring me down today!

Sorry… went a little over my head with some Christina Aguilera’s lyrics.

  • Jesus Christ

I think they were going to realism that appeals to the masses. Luna and the other models in the games are like barbie/ken figures. In the movie trailers, they are like very realistic with frown lines and errthang!

  • The funny thing is, they’re spot on with Regis. It’s just Luna that they screwed up.

  • Jesus Christ

Just watch, after the movie is released, there’s going to be a defense organization built for Luna. Telling you how you shouldn’t look down on her looks and that her looks fits the movie and how it’s not a mistake. Good luck! 😀 Welcome to FFXV fandom.

  • stevenm281

haha! The worst part is that it wouldn’t even surprise me.

  • …I can already see the hashtags!

  • Jesus Christ

Reminds of how I got trashed for saying Nomura running out of ideas making the same looking characters in KH franchise. They fans can spit out reasons after reasons that really does make sense, yet, at the expense that all major characters look alike. The moment Nomura puts these characters into existence, there will be legion of sympathetic fans. Is that a bad thing? Honestly, at times, I don’t know. Who am I to judge yet I find myself judging … sometimes, here and there.

  • Jesus Christ

Don’t make fun of her bird face ’cause baby she was born this way!

  • stevenm281

    I’m beautiful in my way

    ‘Cause God makes no mistakes

I’m on the right track, baby

    I was born this way.

    LOL

  • Jesus Christ

God did make a mistake, you know why?

“She looks like a damn bird!” LOL XD

  • Marc Balgro

Liking what Im witnessing but agree with the lip sync issue and why is Luna issue, I like her designs, why everyone has to be demmanding when it comes to in-game models vs CGI models, still a long ways for that level when a game it at its limit, cant wait to see this on my DELUXE, and hope future manage a UCE even after release somehow.

Like Nyx’s design, would have been awesome as a companion character but this is the prequel to XV, to sad its more that obvious the Kingsglaive’s fate.

  • MarioLazor

I dunno what you mean, she’s pretty hot in the movie imo. I might be in the minority but I dig the western look this movie’s going for. The men actually look like men and the women look like people IRL rather than anime girls animated in 3D.

  • MarioLazor

I thought I read somewhere that it was gonna have lip-sync done for both languages, but it doesn’t look like that’s the case. Not that I’m complaining, I’m looking forward to being able to see the characters actually speak the words they’re saying for once.

  • MarioLazor

The more I see of this movie the more I think Square Enix is trying to show up the Warcraft movie :P. Where Warcraft got relatively unknown actors, FF’s got stellar ones. Where Warcraft did the movie in live action with CG dumped into it, Square Enix went full CG. Had low expectations for this one at first, but I’m a bit more optimistic of what this movie could do. Here’s to hoping. 🙂

  • D.3ND

I think they explain why they look alike in the game so it’s kinda pointless to complain J-dog.

  • Marc Balgro

Like they are leaving aside the tipical androgynous style with the characters. S-E uses the same pattern with the main characters of their main titles since Nomura took charge as main character designer, not that I have a problem, a fan of his work, starting with Cloud, next Tidus, XIII was full with Lightning, Hope and Noel, and now with both Noctis and Prompto.

In spirits within the male character design were heavely masculine, and now seems they are taking the same approach, since this film is much more focused to the western audience

  • 4FFAN

    WAAAAAAAAAH! HYPE HYPE HYPE!

  • Jesus Christ

Oh sure, I know there’s explanation for why. I’m saying to make so many look a like is like lacking originality. You can’t keep doing that is what I’m saying and I hope future KH games doesn’t go that path again.

I don’t want another Sora or Roxas look alike because Nomura made up a storyline that explains for such existance. Move on to another mode of story telling.

  • D.3ND

It’s motion capped in english, the fact that it’s not syncing in JP is dead give away.

  • 4FFAN

OMG SOMEONE PLEASE TRANSLATE THESE SCENES AND OMG THAT MUSIC SOUNDS SO GOOD ^^ Is anyone a good lip reader? Maybe we can figure out what they’re saying that way since their lips are synched to english.

  • D.3ND

That’s like asking what came: the chicken or the egg? In the case for Sora or Roxas it’s neither because ventus is first, Why? Simple, because ventus encounter sora yet to be born heart and help him return back to his body in the opening of Birth by Sleep, because of this encounter this play factor on why sora looks similar Ventus since sora heart was still a blank page.

  • Go and see the “Reclim your throne” trailer, then come back and see this. The Luna in the game trailer looks nothing like what shown here. See for yourself.

  • D.3ND
  • 4FFAN

THANK YOU! The wait for this movie is killing me x.x

  • Jesus Christ

All that you have said are understood as candid explanation for why they look similar, but that’s only because Nomura said so and because Nomura makes it so or some hardcore fans theorize based on interviews/or in game texts. He chose to told the story this way and fans accept it. I get it. What has been set in stone has been … set it stone. I’m wondering about the future.

All I’m saying is that this mode of story telling is becoming dull (at least for my taste) if all we gonna get over and over is another look-alike for whatever reason the creator decides to make it up to see fit for the story. It doesn’t mean it’s fresh. I don’t want another Roxas look a like in KH3 because God forbid Nomura makes up saying because Xehanort meet him on this day and because Sora spoke to him once and because their hearts are light and dark and beautiful and friendly and because this new look alike touch a keyblade and that’s sufficient evidence that they look a like… like really. Like… think of something else.

I know why they look alike, I play the games. I’m just not in favor of Nomura keep on doing this. I’m not so much harking on the past games as they are what they are and nothing can be done now. I bring them up as examples so that I don’t want to see this mode of storytelling to continue. I don’t want the next 2-3 flashship KH games with 30 characters looking like each other. That’s so dull and boring and unoriginal.

  • The problem with the CGI models for in-game vs the movie is that they are noticeably different. Luna doesn’t look much like herself at all and that’s the problem. When Adventure Children was made Cloud still looked like Cloud despite the hair change which is due to the story because crazy haired cloud could be seen in the CGI of dissidia games so that’s not an issue of how advance tech is. The problem is they white washed her, because if she looked anything like her game counter part her voice would fit her but it doesn’t now because they made her look like her english voice actor. This isn’t the first time Square has done this either.

  • Tony Garsow

    poor behemoth 🙁

  • MarioLazor

Whatever the case may be I like what I’m seeing. They look like real people, so I’m already seeing instant relatability with the characters where that’s concerned. There’s even a kind of overweight guy in the main cast, and that’s never happened in FF before (not that I can remember). It adds a sense of realism to me, and I like that sort of thing. I’m looking forward to see how this all meshes together in the final product.

  • MarioLazor

I already knew that and I’m not questioning it. I actually like this look so much I wish they’d use it in the actual game, but I feel that would alienate the Japanese audiences a bit (and people like yourself that like the original Eastern take). But to each their own.

  • MarioLazor

Lena’s already got a deep voice so we’ll see what they do. lol

  • Regis looks scared or surprised all the time.

  • jamurjamban

I hope this movie’s more enjoyable and well-received than Warcraft movie.

  • Klayton Riley

I seriously don’t see what your seeing man. she looks totally fine. what I’m getting from you is that you have a personal problem with with her facial features which are completely normal because you like the more eastern facial features. I think you just need to except that there are just two takes on her appearance. Western and Eastern. They don’t need to change it and they won’t. get over it and enjoy those sweet graphics.

  • Jesus Christ

Warcraft is world-wide release, so many more critics to write about it. Square Enix may have just chose the smart route and just release the movie with the game.

Just a hunch, if Kingsglaive were to be wide release, it won’t go over well with critics. And then you have debates from fans saying what critics don’t know/understand then critics clap back blah blah blah blah.

  • Yen Lin

    Agree! Same here!

  • 4FFAN

That scene with Nyx and Luna (in the voice actress interview) looks a lot like the scene where Noctis met Stella in Versus (at the treaty signing party)…Interesting.

  • Justice V

I think it is the same location. Maybe not the same reasoning, but most likely the same location. As for Iedolas pretty sure that’s just because of updated design to make it look more realistic, higher rendering power, different lighting, and better texturing. They def made him look older in KIngsglaive though with the thinner cheeks and bigger nose heh.

  • Justice V

Somewhat different. Warcraft movie for 1 is a live action (mostly) based entirely on a game that came out over 20 years ago, to a fan base that mostly only thinks of WoW when thinking of Warcraft. While Warcraft is trying to retell the story from the first game, this is fully animated being produced side by side with XV as a complimentary piece to the game. So theoretically this should be much more well received than Warcraft just based on the differences in what they are trying to achieve.

  • Justice V

Agreed, with Sora/Ventus/Roxas and then Terra/Ansem/Ansem-Rikku/Xenmas/Xenahort not to mention Namine/Aqua/Kairi (not to mention all the organization XIII members in games and their original bodies in BBS) we’ve had a lot of either straight up duplicates, or very similar versions of the same characters running around in KH for the past 8-10 games (including upcoming kH 2.8 prequel and 3). Makes sense story wise, and is a valid excuse, but I too would just like no more duplicates of characters if for nothing else just to have something different heh.

  • Justice V

Huh funny. Hearing her voice in this I thought it was too high pitched for the way she looked heh.

  • Justice V

I dunno about that, Lightning, Lulu (though hers was on the higher end of the deeper female voices), Fran, etc have all had deep voices.

  • Jesus Christ

And that’s all i’m saying. Move on to something different. Stop duplicating even if there’s reason for them. Move on. Be fresh and original and not same oh same

  • Justice V

They might still. But I doubt it as that would take even longer to animate and the release is coming up pretty quick. Most likely they’ll just try to match it as closely as possible, and once all the foley and effects are added in it probably won’t be as jarring.

  • 4FFAN

Same reasoning? What do you mean? And I believe we’re saying the same thing for Iedolas…he looks different in the movie when you compare him to his game counterpart.

You say “etc” but there is no “etc”. That’s it, right there — it’s those three (out of protagonists, mind you). And even then some of those, as you admitted yourself, are still a bit high.

  • Justice V

There’s also Ashe, Paine, Fang a couple of the girls from FF Type-0. Tifa kinda switches off between high and low depending on the scene/game/movie. Never played the 3D remakes of the really old games so not sure if their voices were done or not. In Dissidia you get to play as Cloud of Darkness and Ultimecia and both have deeper voices if those count. I think the problem is that generally the main girls are younger or portrayed as innocent-ish (yuffie, rikku, serah, etc) so they tend to go with higher voices yo portray that, and then the evil or side characters are older so they get the more mature/deep/sultry sounding voices (granted there haven’t really been too many evil females in FF overall either).

Agree that I’d be down with more low voices though, hoping Gentiana and Ms. Highwind have lower voices. Kinda wish Cidney had a deeper voice considering she seems like a tough girl, but then at the same time it’s not bad. At least nowhere near as bad as her horrible english voice hehe. Also curious about the voice of the cool looking girl who is a member of the Kingsglaive too.
