Final Fantasy XIV 3.35 arrives on July 19; enter the Deep Dungeon

Square Enix has announced that Patch 3.35 for Final Fantasy XIV will arrive on July 19, two weeks from tomorrow. With it comes a brand-new type of content called the Deep Dungeon. Our first foray involves plumbing the depths of The Palace of the Dead. Here’s the story setup:

In the subterranean city of Gelmorra, deep within a forgotten corner of Issom–Har, stout-hearted explorers have uncovered the entrance to a labyrinthine dungeon. Those who set foot inside its maddening halls find their vigor drained by an irresistible fog of innervation, and repeated excursions have failed to map its seemingly inconstant architecture. After hearing chilling accounts of spectral denizens, locals took to whispering of a “Palace of the Dead,” and the Wood Wailers now seek the assistance of adventurers in laying bare its haunted secrets…

What makes this content so different is that you will level up independently from your progress in the “outer” world. Your item level (or how strong your gear is) won’t count for jack either. Instead, you’ll have to level up in the dungeon itself and power up special light weapons along the way. Don’t worry — levelling up in here will be faster than outside, and you’ll unlock access to your class and Job’s ability sets as you go.

The dungeon itself features many trials, and will have a different layout each time you enter. Many items and traps exclusive to the dungeon can also be encountered, as well as various restrictions to challenge your adaptability. Once you defeat a boss, you’ll be able to save your progress in one of two save slots — but if you should fall before then, well, it’s back to your previous save point.

You can attempt the Deep Dungeon solo or with a group of four players. Party composition doesn’t matter so much here so you’ll be able to grab anyone who has a combat class. One requirement to unlock the content is that you must first reach level 17, and progress far enough the story to be able to reach The South Shroud.
