Art director Yusuke Naora leaves Square Enix By Erren Van Duine on October 1, 2016 at 12:31 PM

Yusuke Naora – the art director behind games such as Final Fantasy VII, VIII, X, Type-0 and Final Fantasy XV – has resigned from Square Enix. This morning he revealed on Twitter he’s no longer with the company as of September 30.

In a series of English Tweets, Naora states: “As of 30th September, I resigned [from] Square Enix, the company I worked [at] for 24 years. Yesterday, Taba-chan kindly showed me FFXV‘s ending. It was my last work, and it became the greatest ending. Everybody did fantastic! It was the finest work.

“I’ve a little regret about the release date’s [postponement], although, I was happy ’cause [it] felt like they tried to let me have honor. Even after my resignation, I will continue illustration and design works with Square Enix, and I also want to try out [many new opportunities], so I [hope] you can still support me.”

Following his departure, Naora will be returning to his home town of Izumo to be with his family.

That’s sad. Well I’m happy for him if he wants to try new things. Sounds like his relationship with SE is still good. I’m also happy to hear that so much effort went into the ending of FFXV. I really look forward to seeing it.

    O QUÊ?! PODE ISSO ARNALDO?!
Sorry dudes… Ah! This can be real!! I’m still dreaming?? Or having alucinations or nightmares?? I think that today I only sleep one hour today. Really… Somebody, pinch me.
Naora left SE is the same weight if Nomura left too.
Ha ha… This is a nightmare… Somebody wake me up. PLEASE!!

  • Strabos2333

    If only Nomura left instead….

  • Frederick Badguy

Nomura was one of the most strong pillars of SE. You liking or not 🙂
    He has some defects… but…

  • Now you stop right there, If Nomura left it would be a bigger blow in Square than what FFXIII/XIV did to them. The man ain’t god but regardless of whether you like him or not you gotta accept the fact that he’s one of the influences that has kept Square afloat even through hard times.

  • At this point is there anyone who’s still a main-stay heavy hitter in Square’s RPG dept? I mean when was the last time an Ivalice game came out? Where’s that crew at?

  • How would him leaving make things better? They need more great minds. Not to get rid of people because you’re tired of their art style or directing.

  • Nomura help make FF7 and KH games what they are. His art style is iconic. I’m not saying he can do no wrong. But still, he does plenty of good with his creative characters. Plus if he help come up with any of the sweet action in AC or KH2 that is definitely a plus.

  • I know the artist left but he still helps out. I know he helped out with XIV and Bravely Default and such but I guess people are starting to lose faith. I think if Square and Disney had some type of disagreement I think Nomura would say fuck it all and pack up and leave lol Well he has FF7R to direct and I’m sure that means a lot to him as well.

  • I care about Nomura staying. But it’s not all on him. Just like one good character can’t sell a whole game, one good artist can’t save Square. Maybe if they did more stuff with Kenji Ito’s music or the Ivalice crew making more games, or try to strike a colab’ with Mistwalker or something they could try to tread new ground. Let some new ideas in.
But as long as they pile lots of stuff on a select few people’s shoulders they’ll always be people quitting after being overworked and games still bombing.

Look at Motoi Sakuraba, the composer. He’s all over Tri-Ace and Namco Tales games. He pops up so much there a sub-group of fans who just rally to hate on his music. One of which does music reviews at RPGfan. It got this bad because the devs love to keep doing the same thing over and over as long as it makes money. Following traditions. If the fans liked the composer in two games, make him do a 3rd. Meanwhile, the composer is overworked and loses all his passion and the songs end up sounding the same.

  • Miqote

He should have stood up and said.something so all.the characters in XV weren’t all dressed in black

  • highsky00

They also wear bright color clothes now lel. You have been doing a media black out for FFXV for a while ,right? Because most people knows our mcs have escaped the black life :))

  • I really would like to see more Ivalice games and god knows I crave for at least an HD remake of Vagrant Story with remastered and original tracks. But they should really take the time to invest into maybe even some indies to help them out. Considering that they are still on good terms with Sakaguchi I don’t understand how they haven’t done much to any work with Mistwalker. At least for one game.

But I do understand where you coming from with Motoi Sakuraba.

  • Daaaaaaaaaaaamn.

  • Lucas Nóbrega Maia

soa mais como se ele virasse freelancer.
it’s sound as if he became a freelancer.

  • Strabos2333

He obliterated FFVII. The Compilation was his brainchild.

He’s done just as much damage, if not more, than Motomu Toriayama. It’s just that the Kingdom Hearts fucktards worship him too much to consider admitting it.

  • Frederick Badguy

Just answer me one single thing: Did you like FFXIII?

  • Frederick Badguy

Indeed. He made some mistakes too, really (one of them is put some “anime” things on the franchise), but he do one of the most crazy thinks in the world: mix Disney with Final Fantasy. I confess that this series is very childish and surreal, but his mechanics and concept are stupidly well done! He take a woman that anyone knew: Yoko Shimomura, and now transformed her in the person who will take the place of Master Uematsu. Expose Utada Hikaru to entire world!!
Holy sh**t!! This guy is a genius!! With literal feeling! Just look to The World Ends With You!! I can be a Nomura’s fanboy, but my reasons (think I) are convincing.

  • I agree. Accept adding anime-ish stuff to Square wasn’t bad. Its trite anime tropes and cliches we hate. Not epic anime style battles. Which is what you get with AC, Crisis Core and KH games.

  • Why are they fucktards just for liking his style. Isn’t them liking it just an opinion? They’re not idiots they’re fans. Like we all are.
I like some of the stuff he’s done and some I haven’t. But I don’t see much I hate. I mean all and all how many games have come and gone by him that will be with us forever? He’s done a lot. Some good some bad. But all of it is clear that’s he’s not just phoning it in. He’s trying hard.

  • He’s not a genius but he is a good artists and shows heart when it comes to doing passion deep fun games.

  • The way I see it this is a turning point yet again for Square. All eyes on them to see if their next 3 big games will make or break them. Kh3 XV and 7R will decide if the finally are back to how they were in the late 90s and early 2000s or if they forever stay tight rope walking between angry fans and bankruptcy.

    +1

But also i didnt mind the all-black, it was different.
    Sorta Johnny Cash.

  • Strabos2333

    Fuck XIII too.

  • James Stine

    Why?

  • noctcaelum

the only guy outside of square who knows the ending of FFXV before the release date!

  • Vallen

    We must find him!!!

  • Vallen

I got scared for a sec thinking this might be Kojima 2.0 – but good to know he left on good terms

  • noctcaelum

he’s kinda like amano now, not directly affiliated with square. also i think the main reason he left is to be with his family.

  • I always wanted Kojima to join Square. I feel like his vision would better suit RPGs than movies or action games.
