Final Fantasy XV off to a strong start in UK; second-fastest selling game behind FFXIII By Erren Van Duine on December 5, 2016 at 12:36 PM

Final Fantasy XV is off to a strong start in the UK, landing itself right behind Final Fantasy XIII as the second-fastest selling game in the series’ history. According to Gfk Chart-Track and UKIE, physical unit sales of the game are estimated to have topped out around 115,000 – 135,000. For comparison, FFXIII launched at 170,000 – 180,000 back in 2010.

Despite this success Final Fantasy XV wasn’t able to grab top spots on the chart, losing overall to FIFA 17. VideoGamer reports a massive 79% of launch week sales were of the PS4 version with only 21% on Xbox One. It remains unclear how digital sales may have factored into this.

Last week Square Enix announced they’d reached a 5 million units in both combined physical shipments and digital sales making Final Fantasy XV the fastest-selling game in the history of the series.

And the most disappointing game in the series. For something that was in development limbo for about six years, I expected more of a story than what we ended up with after a ten year wait. I’m not saying what it had wasn’t good, but it should have been a hell of a lot more since we waited so long. The fact that it has DLC coming is also disappointing. It’s severely short for an FF game.

  • Codes McGodes

I found the “movie” version on Youtube and the main story cutscenes are only about 2.5 hours long. 10, 10-2, 12, 13, 13-2, and LR are all ranging between 6-12 hours. I agree that the story is a tremendous disappointment, especially considering a good 70% of the trailers aren’t even in the game. Can’t help but wonder what the fuck they’ve been doing these past ten years. It’s pretty clear they focused almost all of it on the open-worldness of the environments.

  • Mmmmm, Horse!

Cue the “It’s not number one so it’s doing poorly so I can start whining and trash the game not being exactly what I want.” comments.

I think some gratitude and appreciation would help a lot with all the negativity that’s going on in this world.

  • Ulises

There is no way they’ll reach 10 millions. The game is good but not great, there are some really nasty “Let downs” in it, like the fact you never get to explore Tenebrae (seriusly Square Enix WTF!!)

  • Ulises

I think it’s just that a lot of people feel angry and disappointed because they lied on how big the game was gonna be.

  • Eothas

Reminds me of the MMO community. Anything that doesn’t top World of
Warcraft numbers is a flop to them. There will always be people saying
dumb things like this, no matter what. Even if the game were perfect,
they would look for the details that they don’t like to bash it

The thing is that cancerous communities like /v/ (4chan) didn’t like the game, so they organize mass negative user reviews on metacrit or w/e. And most of the people that like the game usually stays silent, so…

    Personally, I’m enjoying the game.

  • Ulises

    We have different tastes…

  • Daniel Masterson

Actually its as long as FF 1,2,4 and 6 and in some cases 7. I have beaten all those in the time it took me to finish the story portion of FF XV. I just beat it last night with 66 hours on the clock and now i get to do more end game dungeons and such. people forget really quickly how short most ff games are.

  • Invictus

I’m halfway through the game and proud to say they’ve done their best and maximum efforts for the game. Currently my best ff game are as follows:

    1. FFVII
    2.FFXV
    3.FFVIII
    4.FF6
    5.FFX
    6.FFIV

I haven’t played the rest for some bizarre reasons. Good job with the latest installment. Now I wait for FFVII Remake. I’d probably have gray hair or bald by that time. lol

  • VI Sice

You’re missing the point here. The length wouldn’t be as big as an issue as it is now if we hadn’t been waiting for this game for ten years. Waiting that long, your expectations start going up as the longer it takes. SE knows how long we were waiting, yet they chose to half-ass the story and make it look like they were working hard on it the entire time. No they were more focused on extra content and the environments, not the actual story of FFXV. I never said I had an issue with short stories, depending on how they’re done they can be just as good as a long, drawn out one. But this wasn’t, and taking into account how long fans have been waiting, its obvious that they “rushed”, created some half effort story so people could stop bitching about why its taking so long.

I seriously would have rather they took another ten years, made the plot a lot more immersive and interesting, have us learn more about the characters, and how they change throughout the process they like used to do. They didn’t even try. Don’t get me wrong, I do like this game, I enjoyed it, but its not the best, and it definitely won’t be replacing my favorite FF anytime soon.

  • VI Sice

There were so many points where they could have added more to the story and more gameplay, but I feel like they chopped it down on purpose. Basically Kingsglaive should have been in the game, and not a separate movie like they did. They were so stuck on focusing on Noctis that they didn’t realize focusing on him alone was what ultimately ruined the game. They could have explored all the main cast. I’d put examples, but I don’t want to spoil anything for people who haven’t finished it yet.

  • Randy Marsh

Ten years, let’s see nearly 5 due to Nomura’s vision of the game being all over the place and not ever truly taking form, 2 years making the switch to next gen, and 3 1/2 years with Tabata fixing the game to be more condensed into his own vision.

Two hours of cutscenes makes sense considering they were trying to condense the game into something simpler and not involving sequels, considering all the negative feedback the FNC series got for being overly complicated. So a lot of the original cutscenes involving the lore of that obviously got kicked out. The 70% portion as you put it became Kingsglaive. The whole original death elements were kicked out and so were Noctis and Stella’s ability to see Thestra..er the Light. Also Noctis’s obvious Uncle Claudius was written out from what it looks like and all his stuff possibly got split and put into freaking Ardyn and Titus. So we’re obviously seeing a ton of exposition cutscene ideas that were thrown out the window in exchange for a simpler story to bring in and also back people who don’t like the overly complicated storylines the series has recently been associated with.

  • Daniel Masterson

with the way this game was developed they did a damn fine job of finally releasing it so i dont have a problem with it some people do and you can finish every mainline FF within 30 hours. This specific game was not in development for 10 years. nomura couldnt finish it so they had to cobble it together WHILE also putting it on a new system.

  • Stonespear

    >Basically Kingsglaive should have been in the game, and not a separate movie like they did.

I agree and it bothers me. It should’ve been in the game. Extraneous, non-mandatory side media is the ruin of a game as it siphon’s story. If you have to look at anything other than the game to understand it then the game has failed at telling a story. You wouldn’t watch… let’s say “Ocean’s Eleven” and only be able to grasp certain story points by reading a book beforehand.

I enjoyed the game, but it is heavily flawed and I hope upon hope that Square Enix are taking every professional and user review on board in their remake of FF7. They tried something new and some of it didn’t work. I’m glad they tried new things, but I won’t ignore what didn’t work out of a sense of familiarity or solidarity. They’re my favourite game makers and I’ll judge them harshly because I expect so much of them.

  • Stonespear

This argument is getting tired at this point. As a consumer you should not be defending a product that took 10 years to release a product that had a 2-3 year development cycle’s worth of content in it.

Yes, all of us on this site understand the development of the game else we wouldn’t be on the FF game’s fansite. That doesn’t however give me the slightest sense of sympathy.

As VI Sice said, there is too much side-content which is not part of the main game. Kingsglaive was a mistake and cost resources to make. Whether the same team made it or not is irrelevant. Manpower, money and time went into the making of something which should’ve been part of the main game. At this point I’d even argue that Kingsglaive was a pointless endeavor as it has little bearing on the story itself. I just hope Square Enix recouped their losses enough on it that it’ll bring about FFXVI.

  • Stonespear

No fans care about reviews or sales. We care about our experience with it.

Comments like this foster arguments, not discussion. If you want to talk about negativity then your own comment shines like a beacon.

  • Daniel Masterson

meh its not an argument just the facts. If he or other people have a problem with it thats their deal me on the other hand enjoyed the game and I am happy its out and now can look forward to zodiac age, VII remake and XVI!

  • Stonespear

It is a fact. My point however is that what the developers went through should be of no consequence to the player. I enjoyed the game too and am also looking forward to those two.

Hopefully we’ll be getting some news on the remake soon enough.

  • Yuntu

It couldn´t have been in the game though. The whole reason that movie exists is because they noticed “fuck we don´t get this in with the deadline we have, what do?”

and SE probably sat so long on this they just wanted it out and be done with

this really isnt them cutting stuff on purpose and more like them trying to get this game out somehow to finally move on

  • Stonespear

With kingslaive in particular yes. It’s a side project that was meant to placate. It wasn’t a good move though as it left me wondering if I had to watch it in order to understand the game and I expect many others did too.

  • Yuntu

    of course

but its better than not explaining things at all, though maybe doing a CG movie instead of anime one is a bit overblow

  • Yuntu

they rushed it because they don´t have endless resources to put into one project

that´s why you don´t change directors mid-development, it only causes problems

this shit all happaned because of fucking terrible management decision last generation, FF7R will be the first title entirely under new management and im very curious how they approach it

the fact that they split it into parts already tells me they understood why XV didnt work out and that maybe one singular game may not cut it anymore with todays production values and costs

  • Luke Watts

This game was a beautiful train wreck. Countless things wrong with it at every turn. I have no idea how square enix managed to fuck up a game that was in development for so long. I pray they don’t see this game as a success, or there is no hope going forward

  • Ulises

So true man, they changed it so many times it ended having no form at all.

  • Jesus Christ

“Final Fantasy XV is off to a strong start in the UK, landing itself right behind Final Fantasy XIII as the second-fastest selling game in the series’ history. ”

    LOL.gif

Here comes the criticism. I’m just going to watch for a bit.

  • Jesus Christ

All these years. All that hype. All that ambition. All that “please be excited” BULL BULL.

Where did it get you? “…right behind Final Fantasy XIII” – The game that has received so much hate.

There are games made by Western game company that takes less time and proper marketing and hype and sells and received way better. This is the darn truth. Yet, some of FF die hard fans keep babying this company. “It’s OK, we should wait longer!” Get outta here. “It’s gonna be the best game ever!” “Waited my whole life!” “Bought PS3 for this!”

Yes yes I’m very aware this is only in UK. But still.

    k

    LOL XD

  • strifev1

The game world is huge though.

  • Ulises

Don’t worry “Breath of the Wild” is going to fix all of this. Time for a truly Masterpiece, sorry Square Enix, maybe in 20 years FFXVI will be great.

  • Jesus Christ

They wanted to do way too much for this game… so badly they extended the release date. More patches and then even more. Look at what happened.

    I don’t understand their mindset.

  • Ulises

Yeah, but much of it is inexlporable, only a few sections are actually reachable. Do you want me to mention what they did to Tenebrae?

  • Ulises

They just bit more than they could chew…

  • Codes McGodes

And all for a completely undeveloped storyline that went straight into the trash.

  • •december

Do they mean fastest selling game in the UK?
    Or worldwide?

Can we appreciate that second to FXIII in sales doesn’t
mean how good the game is? Because We all know FF13
wasn’t one the better titles, certainly not better than 6-10

  • Codes McGodes

And yet, throughout the story, completely RANDOM plot elements entered the fray with no explanation towards them whatsoever, and with little to no reaction from the characters at all. The word ‘condensed’ doesn’t even scratch the surface on how bare bones and vague this story was. And when I say 70% of the trailers, I don’t just mean from the Versus days. I mean everything from the FFXV rebrand trailer to as recent as the Omen trailer, which came out what, like a month before FFXV was released? Where was Verstael? Where was Iedolus? Where was Noctis’ theorized uncle? Ravus was only in like three cutscenes. Glauca was killed off in Kingsglaive. Regis had like two lines in the entire game. Cor was barely in the game and he was announced in a way that implied he’d be a fifth party member before they confirmed he’d be a guest. Luna never joined the party, hell she was barely in the game at all. Like, Iris and Cindy ended up being significantly more relevant characters than almost the entire cast. And you have more conversations with any of the NPC quest givers than just about any other character in the game. How the hell did that even happen? There’s no excuse for a game that underwent over a decade of development to have a pathetic 2.5 hours worth of story.

Point being, they didn’t make this a simpler story. They kept a lot of major plot elements and cut out all of the exposition between them so that the story makes no sense. I’m now of the realization that Tabata is a shit director, because he also apparently directed Type-0 which largely suffered from the same problem. It introduced completely random elements into the story with absolutely no development or exposition in between them, and illicited virtually no reaction from the characters. Tabata and Toriyama both are garbage directors and I hope neither of them ever touch the main series again.

  • alef321

world wide is a different story ,and many bought digital.
back on FF13 days , physical was the only choice.

  • Codes McGodes

There’s absolutely no reason Kingsglaive couldn’t have been in the game. The signing ceremony was literally one of the very first things they ever showed off for the game. Either Tabata didn’t want it in the game to keep up with the light-hearted “don’t give a fuck that Empire betrayed my homeland” feel, or they wanted to capitalize off of it by turning it into a movie and making additional profit off of it. The reality is that they would have had to start working on the movie years ago, so there’s no way they “ran out of time to include it”.

  • Codes McGodes

I beat it in about 40 hours. And at least 20-25 of those hours were spent doing sidequests so idk wtf you’re talking about.

Also comparing a 2016 game’s length to games developed in the 80s and 90s isn’t exactly a point in its favor.

  • Jesus Christ

Do you happen to know the digital sales for the game by regions like UK alone?

    Thanks

  • Jesus Christ

“And all for a completely undeveloped storyline that went straight into the trash.”

You said this not me. XD

  • Jesus Christ

I think they got hung up over their own ambition. Is it wrong of me to point it out now? LOL They made the movie, they put out huge parties over the world, they had that release party (in US, right? LA?) and all that jazz.

Look, I’m willing to accept this is just the beginning. It may change in the future.

  • Jesus Christ

Do you have any specifics on why you don’t like it? Story wise? Side quests? Boss? Battle system?

  • Jesus Christ

You are giving me life. Too much life I might have to die again and resurrect.

  • Jesus Christ

Would you guys be a lot happier if the they made Kingsgliave (PLAYABLE) Disk 1 and FFXV disk 2, but it costs 120 dollars USD?

  • Vallen

Yes. In fact, I don’t like Kingsglaive, I would prefer if they made disc 1 with Noct fighting and leaving Insomnia, and disc 2 being him collecting royal weapons and becoming stronger to reclaim the city.

  • Luke Watts

I could write an essay on it. I really could. But for now, seeing I’m at work, you get the short version.

    Battle system:
Attack, warp away, attack again. I didn’t die once. I didn’t struggle with a boss fight.. once. This in itself is just disgusting and inexcusable for a Final Fantasy title I am not a hardcore gamer, I am not overly great at video games, I should have struggled from time to time. It should have been harder, it should have been more thoughtful, required a more tactical approach, made you question your position, your choice of weapons and how to use them. I was always a strong advocate for the transition to realtime action, but if this is the best 10 years can do, I don’t want to see another attempt. I barely want to see sqaure enix succeed at this point.. but I digress…

    Story:
Dreadful. Boring. Basic as fuck. FULL of fucking plot holes and plot points that were nowhere near as flushed out as they should have been. After the scene with Promto revealing he was an MT, I literally had to pause the game, go outside, shed a tear for how fucking bad this monstrosity was and how ashamed I was to have been so excited for it, defending square when they clearly didn’t deserve an ounce of it, take a few deep breaths, and press on. This happened a couple of times actually, moments where I had to get up, walk away and calm down. This might sound silly but legitimately could not handle it.

    Linear gameplay:
Yes, there was a massive open world portion. This was the games ONLY saving grace. But the main story encompassed so little of it. Chapter 13 and the few that came before it… holy shit… talk about filler. TEN YEARS!! ten fucking years, and this was the best they could do?? Half the game was a hallway simulator with a huge chunk of that being in the same place with no interactions or story development. They where reaching hardcore.

    Character development:
I didn’t care for any of the main characters.. they where not ‘real’ people… Noctis spent a grand total of 5 seconds grieving for his father, and then it was back to happy selfies and giddy car rides with lots of lols to be had. I went straight to fishing spot at the beach resort after the news, so how about a small ‘guys… I’m not really feeling it right now’ or SOMETHING – ANYTHING that would indicate that the poor prick was struggling with the news. It would have taken 10 fucking seconds to implement, and made a world of difference. There was an extremely poor flow of ‘mood’. I don’t know how else to explain it, but it was bad. One minute someones trying to kill you. the next you’re walking around with them, believing all the bullshit they are telling you. The choices made, the change in relationships, was all just total crap.

    The script:
Although the voice actors where great, and MOST of the stuff the boys said on their trip was cool, down to earth and believable dialogue, it felt like the dialogue for the storyline was done by an 8 year old. After killing ravus… ‘He was a man.. with hopes… and dreams…’ are you fucking kidding me?? who proof read this shit??? Does this person still have a job??? ANYONE could do better. I mean that. I am 100% fucking serious. How. on earth. do people manage to say ‘yup, I’m happy with that’

What did I expect from a game with a 10 year long development cycle? From the masterminds that made 7,8,9. More. Alot more. This game was a joke, a farce. A spit in the face to anyone who ever though square enix would listen to their audience and improve.

I’ve given up on them. After 20 years. I’m done.

  • Jesus Christ

This is short? LOL. One sec let me read.

  • Jesus Christ

If they could spent all that coins making a movie (of that size and caliber, gots to be millions and millions), they could have used that to make a game.

  • Luke Watts

    Short and hate-filled.

  • Jesus Christ

Your anger. Your passion. Giving me chills. I want to let it be known. I aint criticizing you for criticizing the game. I’m not one of them blind fanboys. It is OK to NOT like this game. It is OK to find flaws in this game. It is OK to realize it is not as expected after so many years of nonsensical please be excited.

    Good for you.

  • Luke Watts

I can’t put an image in here.. If I can.. I don’t know how.
But this is what Final Fantasy 15 ended up being for anyone old enough to understand the joke
    http://simpsons.wikia.com/wiki/The_Homer

  • Jesus Christ

If we (not necessarily saying you or I) but if we continue to baby and craddle SE and some of its developers, we’re going to get the same type of $H!T%, just on a different roll of toilet paper.

    Get it together Square Enix!

  • Yuntu

… lol if you really think that

you have seen how rushed the ending gets and you really think “there´s absolutly no reason Kingsglaive couldn´t have been in the game”? Let´s get serious here. This game got rushed. From the very moment they changed directors the deadline got way too tight. There is no person working on the game to blame and solely the fact that wanted it out until a certain time which clearly was not enough time for this product.

So the real reality here is we are looking at a rushed product that got companion pieces (the movie is 1 1/2 years of actual production, though 3 years ago they started thinking of ideas for it – looking at how things are 100% to cover holes they couldn´t fit into the game) to somewhat make it one thing that maybe makes sense.

  • Luke Watts

There will be a lot of senseless denial for this title. People defending it after so many years because they feel a debt to do so. I agree with you, it is ok to say this game was garbage. I’m not saying that I don’t believe people genuinely liked it, but a large amount of the people who said they did… are dying inside.. I guarantee it.

  • Codes McGodes

    “This game got rushed”.

………….Is that some sort of joke? This game spent 11 years, ELEVEN fucking years in development. At LEAST four of which was spent in full production mode. That is NOT rushed. Far better games are made in less time literally every year. The actual reality is that Square-Enix probably spent most of that time fucking around with the graphics, like they always do and never seem to learn from their mistakes. As evidenced by the fact that they delayed the game to include a completely unnoticeable minor graphical ‘upgrade’, but we had to patch in actual gameplay elements and the extremely half-assed integration of the KG and Omen scenes.

Four years of full production PLUS seven years of limited production is MORE than enough time to complete a single fucking game. So if they still managed to fall behind that very generous schedule and ended up having to “rush” things as you say, then they need to fire their entire production staff because they are NOT doing their job. And your standards are extremely lax if you don’t think that eleven god damn years was enough time for them to finish it. It has NOTHING to do with being rushed. Look at the enormous amount of content from all of the trailers that wasn’t included in the final product. Those scenes were DONE. They weren’t cut because they ran out of time, they were cut because Tabata CHOSE to cut them.

  • Wiccan

RPGs dont do so well over here mate. It lost to Fifa which everyone goes CRAZY over in Britain. People here love their football and sports games are typically the ones that are really highly publicized in game shops. Well, pokemon gets attention. RPGs usually get just a small stand to themselves but sports games will have tons of posters, cut outs, guided missiles that explode in your face with a football shaped cloud of flames when you enter the door. It’s all sports here.

XIII sold really well during its first week because no one had played it yet. they were anticipating the first PS3 FF title so its no surprise it sold fast.As others have said, digital sales and digital preorders werent as much of a thing back then. Literally everyone i know (except me) has the digital version of FFXV and digital sales are notoriously difficult to attain numbers for. We also need to remember that XV came just a week after the new pokemon games and the fact that some people lost faith in SE and were/are sitting on the sidelines waiting to see if its worth getting still.

  • I like the game. But I think they should add to the story and expand on plotholes as the bring out DLCs. Let the story continue one beyond the final battle and have Noctis dealing with the aftermath of life as a king.

  • Noctis

I`m with you Jesus, I hate what came out of FFXV.

    I want Versus

  • Noctis

    Guys,

I`m really disappointed with the game. For years people where screaming for Stella to come back…and no they gave us sick Luna.

If you agree and want the true Vision of Nomura to come true, sign this Petition.

I want Versus and not this Bull****!!!!!!!!!!

  • Noctis

Ravus had practically no sense in the movie and in the game, what was he doing?

What about Verstrae, Iedolasl? They had like one scene and then? What the **** happened?

The summons had no importance, after all! After they told us they will have personalities blblabla bull****

I swear…I will never touch again a game when Tabata is in the team.

    “Spoiler”

The only thing this man can do is sacrifice…we`ve seen that with type 0 mess and now he sacrificed FFXV main cast!

  • Noctis

Leviathan Boss fight was real joke seriously.

If they hadn`t spend all the money for the movie we would at least have a decent story for the Game.

  • Noctis
  • Jesus Christ

What is this!? NOCTIS HIMSELF disappointed? And they say I’m the the monster, the hater, the devil, the blasphemous one on this website. XD

I swear there is pipping HOT tea in this comment section, let me read what you have to say.

    LOOOOOL

  • Noctis

    I hate this game!

What about Noctis sleeping problems? What about his headeache? What about the childhood incident?

What about Cor: This is complicated?

    What about the dawn trailer?

Luna was fragile after all and yes she was weak person!

What about his red eyes when he goes berserk…..and not the summon bull****!

  • Jesus Christ

I hope more people who like the game would eventually comment here or else people gonna say this comment section is purposefully one sided. Just putting this out there to be fair. If you like the game, share why 🙂

  • Jesus Christ

So the real question now is… who’s gonna replace Noctis for your avatar?

OK, serious question: What did you LIKE about the game? There has to be something. It was better than FFXIII no?

  • Jesus Christ

I don’t remember what you said about the movie (assuming you did in older review threads), did you like the movie though?

  • Noctis

    Gameplay was ok, thats all.

    Some locations where nice.

Remember when they told us Altissia is so big that also the devs would lose themself? hahahahahaha

  • Noctis

Movie was (ok/boring) the movie should have never been existed, this should have been implemented into the the game with Noctis.

  • Jesus Christ

I’m waiting for 1-2 years and then selling the ultimate box. I need my money back AND THEN SOME

  • Noctis

Yeah me too, I bought the UCE edition……I think we can sell our UCE on Ebay for an high price already.

  • Jesus Christ

Can I ask you an honest question, would you say, before the game and movie released, you were “a diehard blind XV fanboy”? And then you played for yourself and you … changed?

I just want to know because curiosity is killing me. I ask this respectfully.

  • Noctis

I`m not a die hard fan boy of FF series, sure i liked FF7,FF8,FFX and FFXII…but for the rest…..

I was a die hard fan for Versus, that one damn trailer 2006 took my soul…and the 2013 scenes in Isomnia. I was so hyped.

Then Tabata took over, and i was like eh ok well we will see…..I think Erren was telling that they changed to the worse….and I was like don`t talk bull**** about my game.

Turns out Erren was Right! My apologize to Erren she was right after all.

  • Noctis

    What about you?

  • Jesus Christ

LOL. If you follow my comments n this website, I was hardly ever a diehard blind anything for this game. I saw it coming a while back after their “please be excited” bull bull.

  • Jesus Christ

You made my night. Let me go study. Reply tomorrow.

  • Noctis

what about 4chan leaks, can they be trusted?

  • Noctis

Erren what you think about FFXV?

  • Yuntu

Sure bud. The game wasnt rushed at all :3

  • Noctis

Guys Final Fantasy XV is a fanmade game with a shity story.

Remember when Dragon ball GT came out? And the story was a mess? Now we have Super and everyone is satisfied.

Same goes for this game I will never accept this story! This is fanmade Bull****

    Spoiler!

Ignis goes blind and becomes the next Daredevil
    Prompto is an MT……wtf?
    Gladiolus gets new scars…..
Luna awackeing all the summons and for what? FOR WHAT?
Ravus first, hey your not suited to be the king and then……yeah give the ring to Noctis, and later in the game re spawned as Zombie

Then the damn 10 years timeskip for sacrificing himslef like an Idiot.

Regis did something and was never mentioned what he did……

I`m the most disappointed guy on this planet, I cried when I finished the game but not about cuz of the Story, only how they ruined everything and made a total crap of it!

    Disgusting and a terrible idea.
Atleast make it a different story
Or have fan boys Stella as lead or some shit

I think you fail to realize how much of this game was indeed rush. Nearly spending 5 years in production with a scenario not even close to being done, also the fact that BOTH limitations of the Crystal Tools Engine and the Playstation 3 were already evidently cleared. Then being asked to promote the game to main series and then being tossed to a NEW engine that was still in production after about nearly a respectable amount of the game was done on the Playstation 3 version. So they had to start again from SQUARE ONE, swapping things to a new engine isn’t all willy nilly as you assume they are.

By the time that version was revealed it was already apparent to the dev team led by Nomura that the completed scenario by Nojima was expansive that making the full story would require sequels. Then the year of silence where the shift in directors happen due, then having said director having to hurry and release the game in a faster time frame because Nomura’s team was still getting nothing done. Then having to alter that story to make it “simpler” for a bitter fanbase that didn’t appreciate (perhaps I’m being too generous here) the latest titles in the series gave beforehand and to lower the overall development time and eliminate the need of sequels.

The game was indeed rush out, I’m not using that as an excuse to defend the amount of content cut, but Yuntu is indeed right and gives no excuse for your ignorance. The game was rushed out due to the fact they were making NO PROFIT off it, despite the previous amount of time and money put into the Versus XIII product.

  • Randy Marsh

It happens when a new mainline Final Fantasy game gets released. This is nothing new, my friend.

  • alef321

Lit news, I ‘m loving FFXV but that ain’t no VSXIII.

  • Noctis

Whats disgusting about the original concept, you clearly didn`t follow the game since 2006

  • Noctis

Not a troll I`m serious dude

  • •december

This is the only new mainline Final Fantasy game release
that I’ve whole-heartedly paid attention to, please share with me your knowledge lol.
    I have much to learn!

  • •december

Because Final Fantasy XV is the same game
it’s the final stage of Versus XIII’s development
So it should be a totally different game/title

  • Noctis

Yeah and thats the problem, no its a different game

  • Ulises

It usually happens when games fail to meet expectations, especially after all they promised which wasn’t true. People are disappointed with this game that’s all.

  • I keep coming back to thinking that Kingsglaive was actually a massive diversionary tactic, and one that probably would have worked had FFXV kept to it’s original release.

Tabata talked at great length about how making Kingsglaive out of original Versus ideas was to honour Nomura’s vision for the game, but after seeing how little of the original game is actually in XV (which by the way I’ve enjoyed, I’m not saying this as a hater), I think Kingsglaive was actually a giant PR stunt to say “Don’t pay attention to the fact that XV bears no similarity to Nomura’s original game, we love Nomura’s original vision, see? Kinsglaive is mostly based on his original lore!”.

Again, probably would have worked had there not been 2 months between the movie and the game.

  • If the game fun? Yes. But they clearly focused too much on graphics and gameplay and the story suffered. I hear NPCs talking about major plot points that you never see. I listen to the radio over and over and find out villains who get away are running around d out of hospitals. So much happens far away from Noctis. And when the cast does discuss something as you walk or drive somewhere the conversation gets cut due to a monster showing up or you reaching your destination too fast. Smh I like the cast I like the graphics and the world. But the villains never are fleshed out much and the info dump on you like crazy instead of showing you and letting you interact with the villains.

you listed the reason why it is behind XIII yourself

“the game that has received so much hate”

  • Yuntu

Well it wasn´t longer in development than any other RPG. I pray they see this game as a sucess because this is a big step in the right direction.

    But you do you.

  • Yuntu

basically every FF since 7 has mixed opinions

because the franchise changes so much with each entry

or how Tabata put it “the FF disease”

  • Yuntu

Why I love XV (so far)? Because it gives me what I love (exploring well designed, beautiful looking big worlds) puts it into FF and on top of that gives me a maingroup of characters (the bros) that is probably the best SE has produced since FF9. Now if only they wouldn´t have changed directors and we would have 1 vision fully accomplished in terms of the story … it´s not about Tabata or Nomura being better, its about both their ideas never really coming into the right places because SE mishandled the management behind the project. Anyways. It´s out, it ain´t a new XIII for the franchise – outside of the story reception – most people seem to say “its a fun game” – which is exactly what the franchise needed – now SE needs to move on and put some projects together they pull through completly without massive changes halfway there.

  • Stonespear

As a movie it works alright. It’s nothing special but very pretty to look at. If the release date of the game had remained then I agree it may have have had some additional marketing power. The issue is that side-content of the game, before the game is released and which costs money to experience is a huige mistake. I’m a huge FF fan and I refused to go and see it nor buy it because of a simple principle: A game must be self contained.

The movie trying to pay homage to Nomura is of little consequence to 99.9% of the playerbase and therefore made it a poor idea to attempt to design it with Nomura’s vision as a goal. His game bears no resemblance to the current game outside of the characters being the same (and some of those disappeared, too.)

In my opinion Square Enix were too focused on placating fans to make the game as good as they could’ve.

  • stevenm281

    SPOILERS

From my experience, the game is fun, the story is good, but way too short and underdeveloped, it shows that they had to cut a lot of content, which is unfortunate.

My biggest grip is the lack of development on the villain’s side. Other than Ardyn, they were inexistent. Aranea isn’t even an enemy, she’s mostly an ally and she was supposed to be the main antagonist outside of the story, supposed to fight Noctis on a few occasions when we attack the Niflheim bases, but I don’t mind that, as she is my favorite female character in the game and I love how she randomly joins the party at times.

So much changed from what was advertised and what is, but I still really enjoyed my time with the game, and I can’t wait for my next playthrough, which should be happening tomorrow after work.

  • stevenm281

I loved the movie, but I agree, it should have been the game opening with Noctis and co. trying to escape, saving Luna, and then leaving Insomnia with her until Altissia.

  • Mmmmm, Horse!

I guess it hurts when I’m describing you correctly.

  • Mmmmm, Horse!

I agree with your description that these communities are ‘cancerous’. After being on the Internet for so many years, I realize that there is no win against these type of people as well.

Even if the game has the best sales ever over any games in the world, they’ll still figure out a way to bash it, e.g. “This game has become a sellout.”

And when they organize mass negative reviews, it’s a sign that they want to feel power by exerting their influences. But I must ask, are they really that powerless, or do they not realize what power they already have? Tbh, having the spending power to sit around angry commenting on the Internet and being able to afford a computer and a PS4 and a TV is pretty darn powerful.

The more I read, the more I realize they might have some very real mental problems, and their communities aren’t helping them recover.

Personally, I’m enjoying the game too.

  • Mmmmm, Horse!

Nobody owes them a damn thing, and nobody had lied to them. They need to blame themselves for being too gullible and overblowing their expectations.

  • Mmmmm, Horse!

And the amount of negative arguments and comments on this thread is a shining beacon that indicates how correct my prediction was.

  • Mmmmm, Horse!

They had been waiting for that one piece of negative news to unleash their outrage, and they finally got it after the barrage of good news.

  • Stonespear

You can attack my character as much as you wish, it doesn’t change the content of your original comment. I won’t be replying to this thread again.

  • Codes McGodes

Let me put it this way. If the game was rushed, it’s because they spent more time fucking around with the graphics than developing the actual game. They did the same thing with 13 and 14 and both of them had disastrous launches too. The fact is, they started development on this game 11 years ago, so the fact that they failed to create a tangible plot line in that amount of time is entirely on them. If they needed to rush it out the door at the end, then they must not have a production crew to keep them on schedule. That’s the whole point of a production crew, to keep the creative crew from fucking around for too long. So maybe you and Yuntu are right, and maybe it was rushed (it certainly feels rushed), but there’s absolutely no reason it needed to be rushed because they had MORE than enough time to complete it.

  • Victor Maciel

You take everything the characters has done and simplified it to make it look like you got reason.

“Ignis goes blind and becomes the next Daredevil”, “10 years timeskip for sacrificing himself like an idiot”… Its like saying “Tidus and the others defeat Sin. FOR WHAT?!?!”.

Ignis sacrifices his eyesight to help Noctis reach the Leviathan.
Luna did NOT awaken ALL the summons, only Leviathan, to ask for her aid.
Ravus has done what his sister asked him to, Luna was the most important thing to him.

Sacrificing himself like an idiot? Noctis kill himself to bring light to the world and he is idiot?

Regis did something and is never mentioned what he’s done? Did you what Kingsglaive???

  • CocaineCowboyFF7

It’s ironic because FFXIII was probably the reason XV didn’t do so well.

  • CocaineCowboyFF7

No one who’s actually been a fan since those times actually says this. This was created as damage control from FFXIII fans. Apart from VIII and a lesser extent X and XII, none of the mainline titles were mixed. XIII was the most divisive in the series by a longshot mostly due the influx of streamlined baby-gamers that favour visuals over content.

  • After this I doubt they’ll do 16 anytime soon. They’re likely gonna do random dlc for milk this for all its worth.
Lots of games make heroes never meet villains until the end. Its stupid. Seeing villains often having them meet and fight a lot makes them build in interaction and development. I like Noctis but he can’t carry the game by himself.

  • Codes McGodes

    How do you figure?

  • Codes McGodes

I agree with this. In the past, they’ve had villains show up out of nowhere (Zemus, Necron, etc), but they still managed to have consistent villains and plot development before those twists happened. As Steven said, the villains are pretty much non-existent in FFXV. Iedolas and Verstael are in one cutscene. Just one. In the entire game. And they’re not even doing anything of any consequence.

    *SPOILERS*

Ravus is barely in the game, and he gets zero development whatsoever. He goes from a maniacal shitbag in Kingsglaive to an apparently sympathetic anti-hero in FFXV. We’re clearly supposed to feel sorry for him for something but I have no idea why. Like he betrayed Regis and all of Insomnia, why would I care about him? Aranea, as Steven said, is a straight up good guy and everyone accepts this very quickly. Glauca is killed off in KG and never shows up in FFXV at all. All of the villains were just a tremendous trainwreck. Ardyn is the one villain who got any decent development, but even he was lacking. His rise to villainy escalates really quickly and sort of out of nowhere. Like he’s always kind of of a creep, but turns the villainy notch up to 11 very suddenly.

  • Randy Marsh

Being the old person that I am, I remember people doing the same thing since the good ol’ Final Fantasy VI days. Which back in my school days, actually had people nagging that Final Fantasy II (IV) was better and that FFVI was too scattered, boring, and not medieval (Before FFVII? I know shocker). Final Fantasy VII was bashed for being nothing but a movie (yes this was indeed a statement before FFXIII). Final Fantasy VIII, well, wasn’t as good as VII, too linear, movie, and gameplay sucked. Final Fantasy IX for not being futuristic like FFVII and being too old school. Final Fantasy X for being too linear, complicated/awful story, “just standing there”, Just to name a few, I’m sure you’re totally aware of the hatred FFXII, XIII, and XV have. I’m not in the mood to write those, too long a list.

However the point is, I’ve lived a long life; okay not too much, I don’t have a ton of gray hair yet, so you kind of learn that old habits never die hard. People were just complaining in reality before we got this fancy internet doohickey you kids now enjoy to complain on instead. Which I also use to complain on, I’m guilty of it myself.

  • •december

    Nail on the head!
    Haha, I’m thoroughly entertained.

No one can tell you’re sarcastic online

  • Luke Watts

The game was a disaster. I’ve always wondered about you’re outlook on a lot of things, and admired your opinion but if you want to claim this game a success, it’s clear that you, and any other person who shares a similar degree of admiration for this title have either lost touch with what makes a video game ‘excellent’ or you’re to young to have every known better. This game was inexcusably bad. Not an inch of it is worth defending.

It’s too late btw, In squares eyes: bad game + good marketing = successful game.

  • Luke Watts

And sorry, but I call bullshit on your ‘it wasn’t any longer in development than any other rpg’. They had a concept 10+ years ago. An idea for a story, 10+ years ago. Characters, 10+ years ago. They rebuilt from the ground up during that period so had EVERY CHANCE to rework the story and make it better. It was a disgusting effort. DISGUSTING AT BEST. They put 90% of their efforts into making it look pretty, and sure, it was a beautiful game. But this means fuck all if your story, dialogue, characters, mechanics, and consistency and flow are all off, which they completely and undeniably where. Stop defending them.

  • SOMEONEWHOSDISSAPOINTED

I tricked a friend into lending his copy to me until I finished it (made him lose a pretty smart bet) and this is what i have to say to all the fuckers who asked me to complete the game fully

FF XV’S Story is a pathetic, unoriginal, poorly told PIECE OF SHIT, the ”Modern” design contrasts very weirdly to the more traditional (and cliched as fuck) kingdom setting we’ve been seeing since centuries now (honestly the iphones idea was wack as fuck), I HATED LUNA, she was a good for nothing and typical damsel in distress, overplayed type of character, forgettable as fuck who doesnt stand out among previous heroines (shes basically Yuna)

Ardyn’s backstory made him a bit more interesting but his intentions were kinda vague (he wanted destruction just because) and the characters were not engaging, the dialogue was super cringe worthy at times. The ending was PURE SHIT, the lineage of Kings was basically eradicated and Ardyn got what he wanted. It was confusing as fuck also, and the 4 protagonist who were in such a deep bond were absent from the final cutscene, the game didnt explain what happened to the world post-crisis, it just implied it, it was SHIT.

Wouldnt you guys think its curious Mr. Tabata (mfkr) refused to share the details of what Versus’s story was gonna be like? If it was something that wouldn’t damage him at all? Well you’re all wrong, every move in these marketing of games is an economical one, Tabata knew Versus’s story was more compelling and elaborated than his, so much more, even if it meant sequels spawning from it, it had better story telling, cause this is Nomura we’re talking about, who is a FF veteran, being in the franchise since FF6 (1994), he is a damn genius, responsible for helping create the story for FF6 and 7 and helping out several other titles, Tabata’s got nothing on this dude.

So Tabata feared his sales would drop if the story for the better title was published, so he hid it from public view, why didnt he just modified it so that it could fit into a single title??? And shape it from there instead of starting from the ground up? Creating a certainly inferior story with pathetic and weird storytelling and characters?

  • Yuntu

or maybe i just have a different opinion and you should chill a bit lol

  • Yuntu

yeah and they scratched that concept, they rewrote the story into something COMPLETLY different from back then

and lol if you really think 90% of the effort went into making it look good, like really im a defending a game i thoroughly enjoy because you don´t agree with my opinion? grow up lol

  • Ulises

You are right, it was my fault for thinking this game had a chance of being great, which is clearly not the case. But the lesson was learned, I will never expect something great from Square Enix again. At least we have “The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild” coming next year so it’s not all lost. The folks at Square Enix need to learn from Nintendo how to make a great game, not only how to marketing it.

  • Ulises

Let’s just get it over and wait for “The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild”, forget Final Fantasy, I really want to play a great game.

  • Jesus Christ

would you happen to know if 15-30% digital sales + physical copies would beat FFXIII in sales period?

    Thanks

  • Jesus Christ

When you’re done with the game, please share what you think of it overall.

Would you agree that FFXV is a victim of its own humongous expectation that arguably set in stones over the years by developers and fans?

  • Jesus Christ

Here is what I find interesting and I mention this before in another article comment section.

The development timeline for this game has caused a lot of division (and resentment) among fans. I feel like because it went through development/creative changes (Nomura out/Tabata in) and in-game changes (e.g., Stella Out/Luna In; Kingsglaive sorta replaces what Versus supposed to be), there are a (large?) fraction of fans that believe that somehow “VERSUS XIII” would have been better than XV. I sorta laugh because there in lies the problem because it’s the whole ridiculous cycle all over again. Right?

I’m trying to gather my thoughts correctly here. What I’m trying to say is that because they change the name and story directions and battle system and whatnot, this causes (large?) division among fans and they end up assuming VERSUS would have been better. What if it isn’t? We were so lured into the spectacles of the very old VERSUS trailers that some of fans (not including me) are so sure VERSUS would have been better. But I feel like… this is just the cycle restarting again.

We were never sure XV was gonna be superb. I concede that it’s aggregate rating is very solid (84%), but with all that nonsensical hype, I’d argue it should’ve been AT LEAST in the lower to mid 90%? If you read FF forums and whatnot, surely you’ve heard those crazy fans making assumptions like “this will be the BEST game ever” “Better than XIIII” “masterpiece”.

Maybe we should just move on… XV is clearly not terrible. But I argue it did not live up to that humongous hype fans and “please be excited” developers made it to be.

  • Jesus Christ

How’s your boyfriend lookalike Cor Leonis? KIDDING

That’s nice that you like the game. How would you rate the game? Are you surprise it didn’t pass XIII in sales?

  • Yuntu

No idea sorry. There are no proper digital numbers but only the rough % games in general have.

  • Yuntu

Of course. 10 years of anticaption change people and some people can´t deal with the fact that the game isn´t perfect. The game has obvious flaws. But calling it a mess and disgusting? That´s just stupid imo

Enjoy the game for what it is, not what you wanted it to be. If you don´t like that´s fine. Be honest. If you like it. That´s fine as well. But those two people shouldn´t attack each other just for having a different opinion. Like if you see my conversation with Luke Watts, that´s just wrong. You can´t tell someone you “defend” something because you like it and the other person doesn´t. People like different things. There is no wrong opinion (unless you wanna kill people for their race or some shit, that´s just wrong).

Typed a bit more but I think I got my point to your question across. And well tbh I doubt I will posts my thought here. Only sometimes here and there is no real place to properly talk on this site and having such discussions like this one under a news article always feels wrong to me.

  • •december

    Jesus, they’re trolls
Please do not sink to their level lol

  • Codes McGodes

I actually wouldn’t agree with that. FFXV has its share of positives certainly, and I wouldn’t say it’s a bad game per se. And while it’s probably true that FFXV could have never lived up to 10 years worth of hype, the problem with the story isn’t that it wasn’t what we hyped it up to be. It’s outright not what was advertised. Like, the entirety of the two Dawn trailers, as well as the Omen trailers, the majority of the rebranding trailer, almost everything from the Versus days, none of that stuff ended up in the game. And I’m not the only one who noticed this. A large number of people are asking what happened to Iedolas, Regis and Verstael, the large pieces of plot that are missing from the game, the lack of development in Ravus, Luna, Cor, and others. Like maybe this sounds dramatic, but I really feel this game was strongly falsely advertised in terms of story development.

But, since you asked for some positivity, the gameplay wasn’t at all falsely advertised. This game did end up being much more fun than I expected it to be (I was never crazy about the gameplay in the Duscae demo tbh). So, giving credit where credit is due, the gameplay and the open-worldness of the game was very impressive. The story completely missed the mark though, and I truly do not feel that was due to any overly high expectations because the game frankly has some of the worst storytelling in the series. Throughout the course of FFXV’s advertising history, they released two polar opposite themes in the trailers. First was the darker, more story-heavy Shakespearean tragedy, and second was the lighthearted, more gameplay-heavy bond of brotherhood roadtrip. I felt that the game was having a serious identity crisis leading up to release and that ended up kind of being true. They nailed the lighthearted roadtrip theme with flying colors. But the darker, Shakespearean tragedy, while still somewhat present, was disjointed and scarce. Tbh, if I were to play it a second time, I wouldn’t even want to play past chapter 8, because the open-world first half is by far the best part of the game. The only reason to finish the game imo is to get the additional outfits, summons, and the Lucii ring.

  • Yuntu

Pretty much. People expected too much and deluded themself this game would be something it simply couldn´t be.

And in regards to scores, I think this generation critics have started becoming a bit more harsh (not implying anything here towards XV). Which is good. It rarely happened so far that a “just” good game got 90s as a score. Though people should just stop looking at scores so much in general, that stuff is toxic. But that´s a different topic.

  • Codes McGodes

I get where you’re coming from, but just because they scratched their initial concept and rebuilt it from the ground up, and then rebuilt it again when they switched platforms does not make their development time any shorter. The fact is the game was announced over ten years ago, which means it probably entered development at least eleven years ago. So it doesn’t really matter how many times they scrapped everything and started over, and it doesn’t really matter that the first 5-6 years were spent in light production mode, it still took them 11+ years to develop this game. So to say it didn’t take any longer than any other JRPG game is just a false statement. The Tales series manages to churn out a new RPG nearly every year, and I doubt they have a team nearly as big as Square-Enix does.

For the record, I think it’s great that you enjoyed FFXV. I wish I had too. But don’t make up excuses for them. This is Square-Enix we’re talking about. They’ve always obsessed over graphics, and it shows. They released progress reports on how good the damn rocks looked. Back in 2009 or 2010 they showed off a breathtaking landscape and still said it wasn’t good enough. Hell they frequently release jaw-dropping footage of their games and say “don’t worry, it’ll look even better”. They delayed the game’s September release so they could include a minor and completely unnoticeable graphical upgrade on the disk, while we had to patch in actual gameplay elements on the November release day. FFXIV’s launch was a massive failure because they put so much emphasis on the graphics. FFXIII The evidence that they can’t just leave well enough alone is all there and it’s pretty clear they spent a huge chunk of FFXV’s development ensuring the world looks as amazing as it does.

  • Yuntu

Well XIII has a very mixed reception (WAY stronger than XV currently), we got 2 additional XIII games no one really asked for and many fans know XV had a troubled development history.

Add those 3 things together and well I would have been very surprised if XV would´ve sold more. Especially in the UK as they don´t really eat up JRPGs (or maybe even RPGs in general).

In Japan for example it will be a mix of XIII and the general strong decline of software sales. But then we have regions like China where XV will very clearly probably have a good presence (or rather Asia as a whole outside of Japan) because those markets are now properly open for the franchise compared to years ago.

  • Codes McGodes

So are you saying it’s more because of Square-Enix’s declining brand (as a result of XIII’s failure), or because XV was originally associated with the XIII brand and people lost interest because of that?

  • Yuntu

Okay first I wanna adress that patch thing you always bring up: They did NOT delay the game to make it look better. The game was a technical mess back then. Everyone who played it for a somewhat longer period of time said that (and I saw it myself). Please don´t say that, it´s simply not the case. The graphic update simply came through them polishing up the game and its actually kinda amazing how fluid this thing runs compared to two months ago. That aside.

I think you misunderstood me. When I say “didn´t take longer than other RPG” I mean the raw development time and not that whole mess they did last gen with it. Basically Tabatas time on the game is what I mean. I´m not saying this didn´t took way too long to come out, I´m just saying the product we have in our hands right now didn´t have more work/time thrown at it than many other AAA games. If they used that time properly … well that´s a different topic. They clearly needed more time to get this product done properly, that much is certain. But to blame everything on them wanting their stuff to look good? I don´t know. That never hindered them before to write a complete story (even if its not a good one, like in XIII) before. Something went wrong here during the last years that lead to the story in the final game ending up like it is. And it isn´t Kingsglaive or Brotherhood causing the issues here. Something must´ve not worked out leading to them getting into time problems. And they pretty much had the graphics down at around Duscae (outside of polishing it up of course, everything else is just change of color grading/lightning).

  • Yuntu

Because of declining brand power due to the XIII reception and the long time between XIII and XV. Oh and let´s not forget the XIV1.0 mess, that probably didn´t help either.

  • Jesus Christ

Can one argue that now … maybe XV is declining the brand power too?

I’m on the fence about this because critical reception is solid (I admit that), but not better tahn it should be and initial SHIPMENT is very solid too.

  • Yuntu

That´s something we can only say for certain in a few months. I do not think critical reception plays a role for this. It´s more like what fans think in a few months about it.

So far I don´t really see XV as declining the brand further. But that is always hard to judge just a few days after release. I think the first indication will be if the game has stronger “legs” (continous sales after its first week) than XIII.

  • Codes McGodes

I was under the impression the delay was entirely about graphics. That’s what I had read at least when the delay initially happened. I don’t remember Tabata saying anything about technical issues, only graphics. But I’ll take your word for it that there was more.

But otherwise, yes I’ll agree with that. Obviously, there’s no way to know what they were actually doing these past 4+ years. I just know Square-Enix likes to obsess over graphics more than any company has any business to. But you’re right, nothing’s ever stopped them from writing a complete story before. Even XIII for all its problems had a complete story, so I don’t know what went wrong with XV. The only thing I can say is that Tabata also directed Type-0, which had a similarly messy story that took a serious backseat to the gameplay, so it’s easy to blame him for both. I know I’ve said this before, but it just really bothers me how much story was present in all of the trailers that wasn’t actually in the final game. Almost everything from XIII’s trailers made it in, but hardly anything from XV’s did. In regards to those scenes specifically, it doesn’t feel that they simply ran out of time, but that they were specifically cut. Though why they were specifically cut is another question entirely.

  • Codes McGodes

I would agree with that. Strangely enough, A Realm Reborn is the best thing to come out of Square-Enix for the past decade. But it’s also an MMO, which doesn’t inspire a lot of brand loyalty due to the number of people who aren’t interested in online fees. To the average FF fan, 13, 14, and 15 have all had disastrous launches, post-launch fixes be damned.

Versus just look like a “I wanna be dark gaem” and looks very cliche.

XV for me was really refreshing for the series.

“(he wanted destruction just because)” Stopped reading after that. Obvious troll. Ardyn himself says in the game why he wants revenge. Because the Kings refused to let him join them after he absorbed the Daemons instead of destroying them.

Any comments on how “good” the game would be before it released were poor opinions based on nothing. A game is an experience you have to have been through before any judgment can be made on the quality of its content.

All of the threads/articles/comments about how great the game was going to be before it released were, for lack of a better word, idiotic.

I’m glad I played it and I enjoyed it for the most part, but there are so many glaring flaws that it has left a bad taste in my mouth. Development time, storyboarding, directing and pacing were all, in my opinion, done very badly indeed. The game tries too hard to be dark and gritty because that is what Tabata wanted, when it would have been a better game had it tried to be more fun, more cathartic and lowered the angst a long way.

Only time will tell. But the pattern I’m seeing from most reactions is that the game is solid and fun to play, but the story is utter tripe. Considering that FF is such a story driven series, it certainly could damage the brand. But it’s hard to say only a week after the game’s release. I think a lot of people gave up on FFXIII pretty early on because the first half was so bad. With FFXV, it’s the opposite. So a lot of people are really enjoying it until they reach the second half. I feel that most casual fans once they reach that point will just continue to play in the open world instead of bothering to finish it.

I’m not surprised by the sales, and I would give the game a 8 or 8.5 on 10.

While I do prefer the gameplay in XV, I preferred the story in XIII.

PS: My boyfriend is doing great hehe, we just celebrated our 11th anniversary.

  • Are we to believe after what went down in Kingsglaive and all these years of seeing the villains that now we get the game and the only one that matters in Ardyn? What was the point of Iedola and Verstael then? Do they die off screen? I don’t want to read spoilers because after I did the kick-ass Leviathan fight I went back now am trying to get all the sidequests done. My roommates beat the game because they just sped thru it.

To me it’s always better when there’s 5 hero 5 villains and they run into each other and bump heads all the time. They sometimes win and they sometimes lose. But in this game they basically use all the villains but Ardyn as fodder in the background. What a waste.

If nothing else Verstael, Iedola, Ravus, and Ardyn should ALL be important. Yet for there to literally only be one scene for some of them is insulting to my intelligence.

  • All I wanna know is: why do some villains show up for one scene then vanish from the whole story. IMPORTANT VILLAINS! Just gone. Gone. Despite their impact in Kingsglaive and the story as a whole? Nomura must be sad that his game turned out to be a mess story wise. It’s fun but I play RPGs for story just as much as gameplay.

EDIT: Yeah. Let’s just move on and call this “good” or “okay” and leave it at that. It’s not the magnum opus it could’ve been if everything had gone right from the beginning.

“and I would give the game a 8.5 or 9 on 10.” Steven! I think I just choked. YOu!? You out of all people give it a 8.5 or 9? LOLOL just teasing you.

“we just celebrated our 11th anniversary.” #Jealousy, y’all must had it gooooooood that night 😉

“Nomura must be sad that his game turned out to be a mess story wise. ” LOL no seriously I laugh when I read this because it’s not like Nomura is good with coherent story telling. Have you play KH games? He does way too much with it. Backstory here and there. To many plots. And you need like a 1000 games just to explain everything.

Nomura is good. But, I aint babying his work anymore as I used to. I don’t think it’s healthy. 🙂

  • MasterLink

Me too.I hope it turns out true. 🙁

I kind of chuckle just rereading some of the comments because it appears to me that only now that some people can compare with their own experience between XIII and XV that … oddly enough XIII fare better in some elements than XV. And all these years, there was that perpetual chanting of how much XV will (definitely) be better than XIII (in all sorts of ways).

It’s nice to laugh and smile at this. I like it. 😀

  • I’m not babying him either. I just know how it feels to work hard on something and it still turn out bad.

Again why do you think they nix’d so many of the villains from the plot?

  • Jesus Christ

“Again why do you think they nix’d so many of the villains from the plot?”

This is the million dollar question, isn’t it. On the surface it seems so obvious they shouldn’t but they did. Maybe the patches will fix it LOL

  • I hope so. Villains should pop up all over a game to make sure the player knows their motives, mindset, and fighting style. Instead, all of the game is focused on one villain. And the rest die or vanish from the plot after meeting them once.
I’m not gonna beat the game till they give out those free DLCs. I’ll just level up and find secrets and do sidequests. The game is still fun and I love the cast. But FF’s should always be about story more than anything.

  • Noneofyourbusiness

As much as I’d be interested because I miss the Etro mythology linking this game to XIII and Type-0, the claims that there will be a Kingsglaive game translation and a Versus world in Kingdom Hearts III are a bit too much altogether for me to believe.

not just that night, the whole weekend, hehe.
