Final Fantasy VII Remake, Kingdom Hearts III still a ways off; Nomura hopes to share more this year By Erren Van Duine on January 10, 2017 at 8:41 AM

Final Fantasy VII Remake and Kindgdom Hearts III are featured somewhat in this week’s issue of Famitsu. In an interview with director Tetsuya Nomura, fans are given a short development update on the two long-awaited titles.

“The release of these titles will still be a while,” he told the magazine. Nomura also apologized for the wait and for a recent lack of information, but promised to make up for it with high quality games and by releasing and by revealing surprises about this coming year.

This year is the 15th anniversary of Kingdom Hearts, the 20th anniversary of Final Fantasy VII, and the 30th anniversary of Final Fantasy, so what can we expect?

“First, we’re releasing Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8: Final Chapter Prologue in January, then exhibiting a Final Fantasy VII snow sculpture at the Sapporo Snow Festival in February, releasing Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 Remix in March, and starting the Kingdom Hearts orchestra world tour. We may be able to do something for the D23 Disney event. We’re also preparing for the start of Kingdom Hearts Unchained χ Season 2.”

Will you release a complete package including Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 Remix and Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8: Final Chapter Prologue?

“Because the timing is delicate, we won’t be releasing anything like a complete pack this time, but we’re preparing a box that can hold both games, as is often the case with DVDs. Perhaps we can offer it as an e-Store bonus.”

What’s the state of Kingdom Hearts III‘s development?

“While I can’t make a sweeping statement because the development process is different from what we’ve done so far, there are still worlds untouched. Production is progressing on unannounced worlds, in a state that we cannot show them off. In terms of the state of development, there is still some way to go.”

What’s the state of Final Fantasy VII Remake‘s development?

“We’re steadily progressing on production. While we are making them, I apologize that the wait will be be a bit longer for Kingdom Hearts III and Final Fantasy VII Remake. I am very sorry, but to that degree I will make a game that will meet your expectations.

“Last year, I didn’t put out much information on either title, but this year I want to show our progress at an event somewhere. The release of the titles themselves have still have a way to go. But there are many titles releasing this year, if you can wait for any ‘surprises.’”

    First!

Can’t wait to play FF7 Remake, I’m hopeful!
But FFXV is still my main…

  • MULTIPLE JELLYBEAN

D23 is really expensive, but I’ll try to go since I’ve been wanting to go for a long while anyways~ I really hope they do something cool~

  • stevenm281

So, in Nomura’s words, based on Versus XIII experience, neither KH3 and FF7R are releasing this year…

  • •december

Butthurt Versus XIII fanboy comments commencing in 3..2…1…

  • Jintae

” I am very sorry, but to that degree I will make a game that will meet your expectations.”
Shots fired. Looking at you XV, lmao.
Well, hope it will be worth the long wait!

  • Young Link

Tetsuya Nomura is basically telling us KHIII and FFVII Remake will be on PS5.

  • Branden Howard

Gotta be honest here after FFXV misleading trailers
Any other trailer from Square im taking with a huge grain of salt

  • Daniel Masterson

maybe in 10 years if nomura is doing both.

  • Aulix Indragonz

    hard to trust this fucker
the last time he said “the game is still in development” was when FF XV was still versus XIII and in the end he’s doing fuck all for that project, tabata took over and took most of the blame over nomura incompetence

  • •december

Tbh they announced FFversus XIII too early.
Which became FFXV, the curse of XV shouldn’t carry on
but know it’s definitely Square Enix’s fault, don’t blame the FFXV team or the game

  • They didnt announce Versus too early. The problem was FFXIII and FFXIV had its share of problems that hendered the development of Versus dramatically.
While this should be common knowledge by now, you are correct the blame is left to Square and Square alone.

  • Person McPersonson

Immediately cancelled my pre-order for 2.8 after this. This is all but confirmation that KH3 isn’t coming 2017 and there is simply no excuse. Nomura has shown time and time again that he is a hack con-artist who makes dazzling real time CG trailers (that don’t use actual in-game assets) and then can’t deliver a product without it taking 5 years… if we’re lucky (yet he has time to make full length CG movies that absolutely nobody cares about — seriously, why waste time and resources on Back Cover?). KH2 came out in 2006, KH3 was announced in 2013, and they had to kick him off Final Fantasy XV just to get *something* done. There is no excuse for us in 2017 to still have to wait another year or two for a video game when its direct predecessor came out 11 years ago. That’s ridiculous.

  • stevenm281

They did announce it too early as the game wasn’t working on the previous generation hardware, Nomura stated time and time again that it was hard to deal with all of the tremendous technical difficulties caused by the engine and hardware.

No company should announce titles they’ve yet to work on, always announce your title when you’re sure it can be released within the next year.

  • 4FFAN

I’m about to cry. I’m getting tired of this. STOP PLAYING WITH MY HEART NOMURA! To think I was defending this guy for XV’s messy development and now it’s starting again…

  • Darrin Tyler

So we’re not getting FFVII Remake or KH3 this year according to what I just read there. I was pretty sure we were getting at least disc 1[part 1] of FFVII remake sometime this year…but according to that its going to be delayed???? And KHIII is not anywhere near done from what he said.

  • The problem isn’t the hardware. It was the fact that the engine it was originally being developed in was mainly pushed to get FFXIII going. When it came to do the things he wanted to do Versus XIII it was becoming difficult and it became too late as the PS4 was right the corner when he finally got the chance to devote time to it.

Regardless, if these problems hadn’t raised at the time I’m sure Versus would have been by 2010 Seeing how XIII came out in 2009. However both titles factually would have been out sooner had XIII not gone multiplatform.

  • Morgan

For heaven’s sake, Nomura. -_- Dear Square, stop making this man a director and instead put him in charge of art and character design. He cannot keep deadlines. He almost completely destroyed XV (Thank God Tabata was able to mostly save it, aside from the story) And if he messes up the 7 remake, there will be so much rage. I will not forgive a second round of incompetence.
Also, I will laugh myself to death if Tabata has to come in and fix his mess again.

  • 4FFAN

It’s not delayed if there was no release date to begin with, but still, these games are taking too much time to develop. It’s not normal. They better make up for it with a bunch of trailers for each game and a release date for each game ’cause nobody wants to see the XV curse be reborn.

  • Invictus

And that’s it folks! And here we are expecting to catch a glimpse of those projects. lol

Let’s be excited for KH / Nier / Dissidia

  • mieche788

I’m just happy that they’re being made, I know people are getting antsy and because of the FFXV development fiasco, they have a right to be. But c’mon guys, show a little support for Square, we all love KH and final fantasy, right? Isn’t that we’re all here?

  • Miqote

I bet VII won’t release this year. Bet. Sounds like they have a long way to go.

  • Randy Marsh

If you seriously thought Kingdom Hearts III was coming this year, I just have one question for you. Where can I buy the hallucinogens you are obviously taking?

  • Randy Marsh

Whelp they ain’t coming out this year. Guess Stormblood will be the game I’ll sink my time into a ton this year.

  • Miqote

Yea if it wasn’t for FFXIV this franchise would be in disarray. Stormblood is the only FF product im looking forward to

  • 4FFAN

You’re right, now that I’m out of my feelings and thinking straight, I’m happy they’re taking their time to deliver good products and not just rushing and cutting content to release the game.

  • Vallen

Considering the low quality of FFXV, take your time to release a more polished and complete game Nomura

  • Person McPersonson

    No, I didn’t. That’s the problem.

  • Adam Winemiller

Yeah I agree with Mieche788, I’m just happy they’re remaking III not the first place, also Mieche is hot, am I right?

  • Mark Ty

^This. My god, this is what I’m telling to everyone! Everyone is hating on Tabata when he is the one who saved FFXV, he was given an Engine that they have NO experience with, a 3 year deadline, a story from Nomura that kept on changing every 3 months. And Nomura is planning it to be a multi part series making the game more confusing (looking at you KH). Tabata has to build the story from the ground up because of shitty Nomura. Nomura should and always be a Character designer along with Robbert Ferrari. Nomura only gave us a Versus trailer and he didn’t know what to do after that.

  • Omegataco

Most sizeable RPGs nowadays take 4-5 years to make anyway (Xenoblade, Xenoblade X, new Mass Effect… list goes on).

Problem is Nomura’s fetish with announcing his crap before its even gotten out of pre-production. I remember an interview someone did with him back when he announced the 7 remake and his response on the matter was literally something along the lines of: “We haven’t started development yet, I just wanted to go ahead and announce this to push people to purchase a PS4.”

  • gabrieuTG

“…but to that degree I will make a game that will meet your expectations.”
    S H A D E

  • gabrieuTG

“We aren’t very far in development of Versus XIII yet, I just wanted to go ahead and announce this to push people to purchase a PS3.” Nomura, 2006

  • gabrieuTG

Waiting patiently for Tabata to pick up these projects in 6 years time while Nomura goes to the production of FF6 REMAKE

  • gabrieuTG

VII will be renamed to XVI and will be condensed into one single game. The story will be rewritten many times, the scenes from the E3 trailer will be cut and Aerith name will be changed to Aeris. There will be a bunch of DLCs to cover the plot holes since the XVI Team didn’t have enough time to fix Nomura’s mess. There will be a collaboration with Louis Vuitton with FIFA btw

  • MULTIPLE JELLYBEAN

That isn’t really Nomura’s fault. He left the revamped XV project far too early for him to have been involved with any of that

  • stevenm281

I wouldn’t call the franchise on disarray without XIV, I, for one, ain’t a fan of MMOs, and I like XV a lot better than XIV, to each its own, but don’t think the series would slowly die just because they’re trying things you don’t like.

  • CallMeGod

Yeah, let’s all forget that FFVersus13 was put on the backburner because there were two more games created for 13 which no one ask. Then there was the complete overhaul of FF14 which would had make or break the series. Then there was Agito whic was change to Type-0 that came after. You see, Nomura and his team also were backsided by the higher up. Tabata didn’t save the game because the story is complete garbage and was just a rush and incomplete game. When it was announce Tabata was the new director he told fans that the story was still going to be the same and nothing has change. That he was going to continue what was left by Nomura, but that was a load of crap. Instead, he decided to put his own spin on FF15 and made many changes to the story and character. Just like how we got a unless character as Luna, was suppose to be a guest party since Noctis and pals were going to join her in battle. Yet, that didn’t happen so yeah Tabata lied again. He said that main story of the game would take 40-50 hours, yeah right more like 15-20 hours lied again. He said that DLC won’t be cut content, lied again because we know the DLC are going to explain what happen to Gladious who left the party, how Ignis got blind, and the time Prompto get kidnap. These should had be in the game already so yeah it’s cut content. With so many things shown in trailers in promotion materials and they weren’t even in the game show that Tabata lied again and was not the savior you said he is. The outcome of how FF15 turn out lies on Tabata’s shoulder since he is the director. Also, let’s not forget they are planning to Multiplayer and avatar creation latter down the road which is fucking stupid since nobody as for that shit. They should instead focus on completing the fucking game first.

  • stevenm281

Rumors is that Part 1 is Midgar only, a huge open-world of the whole Midgar, as Nomura did say he wants the whole city to be explorable this time.

  • CallMeGod

Lol, when did he ever said such a thing.

  • CallMeGod

It’s your own fault for thinking that the game is coming out in 2017 when there hasn’t been any substantial information release that suggest the game is coming out in 2017. Of course that doesn’t mean it won’t since we don’t know yet.

  • CallMeGod

I rather Nomura took his time so that it won’t be like FF15 which was a rush and incomplete garbage game.

  • 4FFAN

    True…though I wouldn’t call XV garbage

  • Average Afro

Stop announcing games so fucking early in development. Don’t then throw shade at Tabata who had to clean up his mess.

  • Average Afro

We KNEW KH3 wasn’t coming out in 2017, however this tells me that we might not even get it in 2018

  • Average Afro

Which Imo is a bit shitty, because they were then buying it at full price instead of saving their money and getting a newer cheaper on further down the line.

  • NoctLightCloud

Let’s hope the fan’s demands won’t make them rush these games just like XV… :-/

  • NoctLightCloud

I laughed so much :’D ahahaha Aerith to Aeris xDD

  • NoctLightCloud

I used to think that KH3 will never happen. I’m so glad I was wrong!

  • Dennis Gurkis Johansson

Honestly just take ur time nomura and make us a game worthy of a remake to the best game of all time (personal opinion). No reason to complain about it really, everybody yelled at tabby to release XV as soon as possible and we got a pretty amaizing half of a game in the end, got plenty to hold us over with Nier Automata, TOB and KH 2.8 in the meantime not to mention the XV story updates or the fact that the game has more secrets hidden away than a chinese puzzlebox 🙂 we have a few starters to hold us over for the main course imo
