Final Fantasy VII’s “On the Way to a Smile” short stories collection to be published in the West By Raptorchan on November 22, 2017 at 6:24 PM

Final Fantasy VII: On the Way to a Smile is coming to the West with an official publication thanks to the efforts by the people at Yen Press.

FFVII: On the Way to a Smile is a collection of short stories written by Kazushige Nomura that bridges the gap between Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. The series had began with a short episodic story, titled “Case of Denzel”, being released on the official Japanese website for Advent Children, which inspired an OVA anime of a similar title: “On the Way to a Smile: Episode Denzel.” Following the OVA’s release, “Case of Tifa” was released in an issue of V-Jump.

These short stories had really only been available in Japan officially, with America and Europe receiving the short story “Case of Barret” with the release of the limited edition box set of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. However, with the announcement made at Anime NYC by Yen Press, fans in the West will soon have the entire collection together in one book.

Final Fantasy VII: On the Way to a Smile will feature all the previously mentioned stories as well as the additions of “Case of Yuffie,” “Case of Shinra,” “Case of Nanaki” and “Case of the Lifestream.”

The release date or price for the novel has not yet been announced.

I wish they’d make an anime out of this, Brotherhood-styled ! Still, that’s nice to hear !

  • stevenm281

    OMG I want this!!!!

  • YESS!! Cannot wait to buy this.

I really hope they keep the definition of “koibito” as “lover” for Cloud and Aerith, like it was in the French and German publications.

  • I hope they translate this quote:

    JAPANESE: クラウドは女の友人であり、恋人であり
FRENCH: “Cloud avait ete son ami, et son amant.”
GERMAN: “Cloud war ihr Freund, ihr Geliebter”

as “lover” in English. It confirmed clerith and I LOVE IT

  • stevenm281

    That would be even better!

They did it for Case of Denzel

  • Len

Please research properly. Writing that it “is coming to the West” is not very accurate if two big countries already had officialy been translated and published, same with

“These short stories had really only been available in Japan officially”

No they were not. France and Germany already had them for years now, and other countries who speak those two languages. With all chapters.

I follow you expecting accurate news, please stay true to that and inform yourself properly.

That said, I’m glad they finally decided to published it in english, but I would rather they make them short movies like AC or The Spirits Within.

  • All Seeing Eye

I was hoping they’d retcon this in favor of the newer Crisis Core development. But no, Zack still gets shafted, and makoboy gets everything. Goddammit.

This aerith/ tifa war really is the most cringeworthy shit. It’s meant to be ambiguous, it will always be ambiguous – you favour who you favour based on your own dispositions and experiences and that’s that. To nitpick at little things like this is an insult to developers and the game itself. I know that you yourself havnt crossed that bridge where it’s a matter of ‘I’m right, your wrong’ but Christ.. those people really are just the fucking worst…

  • Len

FFVII IS about Cloud Strife, of course he would >and should< get the majority of the attention.

  • All Seeing Eye

I thought it was about ousting Shinra and saving the planet?

  • MajoraMan28

Cool, but I still think AC was the worst thing to happen to FFVII. It ruined the one of the defining traits of the game’s ending. How it left the fate of the characters ambiguous, left to the player’s imagination.

  • Noneofyourbusiness

I don’t understand that fan war at all. I mean, obviously someone can favor one pairing or the other, but I’ve seen people claim Cloud never loved Aerith and other people claim he never loved Tifa, when if you follow the game’s story it’s obvious he had romantic feelings for both of them.

  • stevenm281

you’re both wrong! He loved Zack! hahaha

But according to the Gold Saucer date… Cloud can love almost everyone lol

  • Noneofyourbusiness

I hope they do Final Fantasy XIII The Promise as well.

  • Luke Watts

    Yup.. it’s pathetic

One does not rule out the other. On the contrary, it’s part of his journey.
The main focus is Cloud and its his journey we are following and that included involving other characters and things getting him involved with Shinra in the first place (game wise) like joining Barret to blow off Shinra’s Mako reactor, because it paid him, going to Shinra HQ only to save Aerith because he was her Bodyguard, and the story unfolds more and more around him.

We could have had Barret’s POV, Tifa’s, Red or even Vincent’s. Just about anyone of the cast (except Aerith for obvious reason) but Cloud was the focus and his change and what he is going through while the others are dealt with in their own little side story, just a corner of his to keep it fresh regarding gameplay. Zack got lucky in having got his own Game, same for Vincent to get a bit more closure for him too.

Zack still gets mentioned in this book, so he isn’t cast off.

  • Len

Erm, I hope not. I would prefer if it is done in the style of Kingsglaive or the very, very few in game cut scenes of FFXV.
It looks stunning, would fit better and the story telling wouldn’t be mediocre level for anime.

  • Dod

    Advent Children already did that.

  • Well, I agree. They are the worst… But all I’m doing is hoping Square Enix keeps it as lover like they did the three other times. I love clerith and I’ve been bullied since I was 16 for shipping clerith so I’d like some vindication from Square Enix after all of these years.

  • Yeah, Cloud did have a crush on Tifa as a child, then he moved on and fell in love with Aerith.

  • Noneofyourbusiness

And then Aerith died and his feelings for Tifa reawakened, while Aerith was still precious to him.

  • Nope, wrong. Cloud’s crush for Tifa was called “fleeting” and “ephemeral” by the time he regains his memories. Therefore Cloud doesn’t like Tifa by the time the Lifestream scene takes place.

  • Noneofyourbusiness

Please don’t prove my point. They’re not living together platonically. Aerith is the last person who would want Cloud to pine for her until he dies.

  • If it was “ephemeral” when they were kids, that still implies the feelings “lasted for a very short time”. That’s what the word means. If Cloud loved Tifa as an adult then his childhood feelings wouldn’t be described as “lasting for a short time” it would be described as “continuous”. Again, the mere fact that his feelings are called “short-lasting” proves that those feelings eventually died out.

It was the start of something real? What are you talking about? In the official novel Tifa has to ask Cloud if he loves her, why would she do that if they were already “together”? And why would Nomura not be aware of the supposed relationship?

They are living together platonically, though? That’s why Tifa says they are a family of friends. That’s why Marlene has to ADOPT Cloud into the family? That’s why Tifa thinks to herself how happy she is to feel like Cloud’s mother. This is all in the novel.

And please don’t act like you understand Aerith or even care about her. You don’t. Saying that Aerith has to “give up” Cloud in order to show how much she loves him is BULL. Aerith knows that she is the ONLY one able to understand Cloud and help him, she saw Tifa fail to do so for two years. Why the hell would Aerith EVER let Tifa “have” Cloud when Tifa is not the healthy option for him, as Nojima said himself.

The mere fact that you think death means the end of love shows how little understanding you have of FFVII, the FF series, and Cloud and Aerith. Just like Tidus/Yuna, Laguna/Raine, Vincent/Lucrecia, Noctis/Luna, etc, DEATH DOESN’T STOP LOVE. F*ck, Sq-En even gave Noctis and Luna a wedding in the AFTERLIFE to show you guys how stupid it sounds when you claim love ends at death.

Maybe for YOU it does, but not in the fictional world of Final Fantasy.

I’m sorry you only think love exists in the physical sense, but Cloud clearly disagrees with you. You call it “pining” but really it’s just devotion. Cloud doesn’t need to be with YOUR dream waifu in order to live a happy and fulfilling life. That’s why when Tifa demanded he choose between his friends or Aerith, CLOUD CHOSE BOTH. Advent Children was about Cloud letting go of his guilt, it was NOT about him ending his love for Aerith.
