Shinji Hashimoto says 2018 will be a big year for Final Fantasy with new titles in development By Chelsi Laire on November 27, 2017 at 2:51 PM

It’s the 30th anniversary of Final Fantasy and we’ve experienced some of its celebration with the releases of Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age, Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood, and more spinoffs. In an exclusive interview with EDAMAME Arcade Channel, Final Fantasy brand manager Shinji Hashimoto has teased that the celebration will extend in 2018, with Square Enix teams working hard on new Final Fantasy titles.

The interview mainly focuses on the Final Fantasy Trading Card Game’s current performance, and he talks a bit about the series’ future plans at the end of the video.

Square Enix has definitely teased about gearing up with big preparations for E3 2018 in their recent financial report with major titles slated for announcement, and now we’re certain some of these could be new Final Fantasy games. Maybe it’s fair to start crossing fingers for the reveal of the next mainline number or big spinoff now.

Square Enix plans to announce major titles from the end of 2017 until E3 2018

Can we wait for a FF7R news?

  • Codes McGodes

So far this has been the worst 30th anniversary of anything ever. They’ve literally not done anything for it. They didn’t do anything for the 25th anniversary either except for Theatrhythm.

  • MistwalkerKilyK

My guess for 2018 in on PS4 remasters (FFIII, IV, V, VI, based on the Steam ports), maybe a FFVIII announcement for PS4 as well, FFXIII Trilogy for PS4 and Xbox One, and a release date for the first part of FFVIIR.

FFXVI? I’m not sure about that.

We may receive new information at the next PSX event. Please be excited!

  • Games Das

Please announce that FFXVI:Agni’s Philosophy has started.

  • x5kevleo

    They always say the same.

  • at the soup store

Please no. Give it a rest and work on the titles you’ve already announced without announcing anything else. Unless you’re way farther into development than I think you are (which I doubt), you really need to learn to slow your roll and give things time first.

  • at the soup store

It’s because they don’t know how to plan or time anything properly. They think they can make up for it by producing barely designed, overpriced merchandise and phone Amano asking him to scribble a few logos for it while he’s eating dinner.

Instead of stuffing World of Final Fantasy immediately before XV, they could have saved it for the first half of this year, and used the extra time to create content to send out throughout the year for the anniversary campaign. Since it’s a title celebrating the franchise anyways, it would’ve made perfect sense and given the game a little extra longevity.

And instead of making the weird generic-branded merch they ended up releasing, they could’ve kept at the static arts-inspired merchandise they had started to make for WOFF. Instead of using WOFF-exclusive characters, they could’ve just made them of the different franchise characters and branded it as anniversary exclusives.

  • Jesse Smith

Well, we did get FFXV DLC throughout this year, Noctis reveal for Tekken 7, as well as HD ports of FF12 and FF9, and we got FF14 Stormblood’s expansion. The rest that happened kinda went into mobile games. We also get the new Dissidia in January. We had a lot of new FF figures/merch release this year too. I’m not saying that’s an amazing way to celebrate, but it isn’t “not doing anything for it”.

  • Oh wow. I was gonna come in here and have a go at them but I see all these other comments already beat me to it! I guess Hashimoto must either be really confident or just have a lot of nerve to come out and make such a statement after such a disgraceful 30th anniversary for the franchise but hey, I guess it can only go uphill from here..?

  • New Tactics game for Switch.

  • Miqote

Ive hoping for that for years.

  • Patrick Bateman

seriously, this lmao. the Chrono Trigger series died because the “dream team” was too damn busy with other projects and when the time finally came they couldn’t agree on anything, we all saw what happened with FFXIII and although FFXV had a shitty start it seems they’re NOW taking a step in the right direction with that game. FFVII Remake is getting delayed and Kingdom Hearts 3 is WAAAAAY overdue, they REALLY need to learn from their mistakes and STOP biting more than they can chew!

  • MajoraMan28

How could FFXVI be in production? Wouldn’t be made by Division 1 (since XV was taken care of by Division 2)? Maybe I’m mistaken, but FFVIIR is being made by Division 1 at the moment, right?

  • Dod

    Honestly ?
Instead of working on things no one care about (i.e Monster of the Deep and alike), they should go full submarine-mode for 2 years and actually get the job done on those massive titles. The more exposure you seek, the more time you end up loosing.

  • Dod

FFXVI won’t be a thing before 2020 I think, given the staggering amount of work they still have to produce for KHIII and FFVIIR (and wine bottles).

  • Dod

Too bad there isn’t a “I love you” button for this.

  • All Seeing Eye

I WOULD BLOW TEN HORSES IF WE COULD GET AN VIII REMAKE AS WELL.

  • Codes McGodes

None of that was anniversary stuff though. That’s the company continuing to make video games like they always have. FF14 gets a new expansion pack every other year, the company is always re-releasing games to new consoles, Dissidia came out two years ago already and is just now being localized, FFXV is just following the average AAA game’s example by putting out DLC post-launch, and Noctis showing up in Tekken is more of Square continuing to market FFXV’s brand by cutting deals with other companies (Cup Noodles, Coleman, Audi, Afrojack, WWE, etc). All of this stuff would have happened regardless of the anniversary; they haven’t done anything special to celebrate.

I wouldn’t even mind if they didn’t feel like doing anything special for the anniversary, it’s just kind of annoying that they keep pretending they are.

  • Krijn van Alten

You do know that these days there are no less then 6 divisions within SE who are busy with FF games? And most of them also with multiple FF games at a time? So to me it’s very likely that it is already in development somewhere at SE. But the fact that it’s in development does not mean that we will see in announced, let alone released, in 2018.

  • MajoraMan28

You’re right that there are many teams working with FF, but only two teams work with the core franchise (Divisions 1 and 2). The rest work with spinoffs.

  • Hyou Vizer

GET IN THE GODDAMN ROBOT SHINJI

  • Hyou Vizer

same here, and there’s been rumors for past 2-3 years its been in development

  • Hyou Vizer

    spring 2018

  • Krijn van Alten

You forget divions 5, who does XI/XIV.

And there is division 4 who is overseeing Dissidia and 8&9, who are both doing various mobile titles (8 does Brave Exvius and 9 Dimensions). Also it has to be said that division 3, despite the fact that their main focus is on KH, also oversaw the recent series of remaster FF games. They also work on a yet unannounced project, so maybe we get a XIII trilogy remaster announcement in 2018.

Which brings me to a total of 7 SE divisions who worked on FF related projects in the past and might very well have new FF related announcements for the future. They might not be all main titles, but that doesn’t mean that they are all bad!

  • Krijn van Alten

‘Can’? Like you have a choice on that.

  • I still want that Agni character design used but not the realistic world.

  • CallMeGod

Lol they are taking the right direction with FF15? Took them 10 years to develop a game, removing the original director who put his whole heart and soul into the game, then butcher the fucking story, sold us a incomplete piece of shit with their false advertisement and marketing, completely lied to the fans about no cut content which is complete obvious already, try to defend the garbage as story by saying it was purpose design to be garbage since the focus was on Noctis perspective, then milk the shit out the game with lack luster dlc and FF15 A NEW EMPIRE…LAMO, boring, grind fest multiplayer, and another year of cut story content DLC because they knew FF15’s fans are braindead idiots who eat anything up so they can just keep milking them.

  • Dod

I wish Final Fantasy Peasant could read this.

  • Patrick Bateman

“FFXV had a shitty start it seems they’re NOW taking a step in the right direction with that game.”

did you not read that? Hint * shitty start * and * right direction NOW *

you don’t need to preach to me about how shitty XV was, i’m well aware bud * thumbs up * i’m not a fanboy and many in these comments who are regs know all my gripes about that game.

  • MajoraMan28

They aren’t bad, but I care the most for the core titles. And only two divisions work on them. And no, the MMOs don’t count.

  • Aulix Indragonz

    FF XV-2
    calling it

  • Krijn van Alten

    Why not?

  • Krijn van Alten

As long as it also comes to the PS4 I am all for it!

  • Syul

2018 is, if my memory doesn’t fail me, the 12th anniversary of FFXII. If they don’t do something about that, like, HD remaster (or even a remake) for FFXII: Revenant Wings, or if they don’t make another Ivalice title, I would be pretty much disappointed… xD

It would be lovely it if next year they would say “hey we’ve started with FFXVI”. Not showing things, or saying “we want it to be out by (insert here a year)”, no, because that would be a mistake (we already know what happens when you show things too early). Just saying that they’re doing it and the style they aim for (medieval, modern, hybrid, etc), would be enough in my opinion.

Also, I would toootally love to see Agni being used for a game, be it FF or not. I’m still in love with her design. I think a world more medieval or, at least, Ivalice-like, would fit Agni better to be honest, but her design is just amazing and beautiful. It would be a waste not to put her in a game and just have her in a visual demo Dx

Something I fully expect for 2018 is a game for Ardyn. A movie is another strong option (I would totally discard the comic option for him), and they said a DLC wouldn’t totally cover his story, but I think they’ll choose a game. To be honest, I would love to see how Eos was 2.000 years ago and live Ardyn’s story.

What would be a total dream for me: S-E either announcing a FFVI remake, a FFIX remake (a character style that would be more or less like the one of the main characters of World of FF would fit I think)… or a FF Collection. Any of these things AND the disappearence of FFXV: A new empire would be lovely (seriously, that game makes me cringe so much it hurts).

But, please, just not more mobile titles.

There are already A TON of then, and some of them (Möbius, Brave Exvius, for example) are good enough that there isn’t a need for new mobile titles for some time. Instead, make Dissidia Opera Omnia come out of Japan, please? And I don’t know if World of FF: Meli-Melo it’s going out of Japan, but it would be amazing.

  • Vallen

    “please be excited”

  • NoctLightCloud

We got some plush toys and t-shirts! Aren’t they cute?
Jokes aside, imo games like Dissidia, WoFF or Theatrhythm are the perfect celebration gift to fans. Collabs between the FFs. Technically, Dissidia comes out in January, yes, BUT I still regard it as a way to celebrate 30 (1/2?) years of FF in full HD on the most modern console with all the main characters. I miss the monsters though (Chocobos, Cactuars,…).

  • NoctLightCloud

Stormblood was cool, but Heavensward was still better (it’s hard to beat Heavensward imo) because it had snow, castles, dragons, chevaliers and all the things I like. The music was also world class. I’d love to see:
    – an offline FF title/spinoff like HW.
    – Agni’s Philosophy.
    – the XIII-trilogy for PS4.
    – no season pass/pay4play characters, stages or costumes in Dissidia NT.
    – the original World of Versus as an own game (not a DLC) – that would break the internet!

Although it’s way too much what I’m asking for, if at least one of these things were announced in 2018, I’d already be happy. (What we’ll probably get: mobile games…)

  • NoctLightCloud

I would actually buy it. I prefer full spinoffs over DLCs anytime. But with the Season Pass 1 (+2 announced?), what do you think would XV-2 be about?

  • MajoraMan28

Because it’s an entirely different genre. It’s an MMO with a FF theme, rather than a FF game that happened to have MMO elements, and it would work awesome as spinoffs. But the experience isn’t the same as the every other FF game (even the bad ones). Don’t get me wrong, I’m no saying the MMOs suck, I’m just saying it’s too different to be put together with the other games of the core series.

  • Aulix Indragonz

probably going to explore the rest of the character background like talcott and iris, but the place will be set outside lucis, there are other places in eos that sadly we can’t explore in XV, if they do that i will buy it

  • Krijn van Alten

You do realize that the XII remaster came last year?

  • Krijn van Alten

As long as they don’t use the subtitle. Subtitles have a bad influence on FF titles in general ( Revenant Wings, Lightings return, Dirge of Cerberus, A New Empire,…..)

  • at the soup store

Where have you been?! The XII remaster came out months ago! But I would very much like more Ivalice, i’ve been screaming my head off about it all year, while the iron is still hot from the remaster

  • at the soup store

They created the movie and anime etc specifically so XV would remain a one-game universe.

  • Syul

Ehm… I know. Mostly because it’s because, before the remaster, I played the game very little. What I mean is that, since it’s the 12th anniversary of the ORIGINAL FFXII, it would be nice to see something Ivalice-related.

  • Syul

I mean the release of the original XII though xD In fact, until FFXII: TZA dropped, I pretty much had almost 0 interest in FFXII, and I’m so glad I gave it a 2nd try with the remaster because it’s become one of my faves _<

  • Aulix Indragonz

doesn’t mean they won’t change their mind in the future and keep milking this series by making a sequel

  • Games Das

I personally feel playing Japanese games in Japanese since the dialogues and the emotions are conveyed in a more meaningful way as compared to the translated version.I would recommend to use Japanese voice pack to everyone if anyone asked me.
By the way,I always switch off the subtitles since I am completely proficient in speaking, reading and writing Japanese.

  • NoctLightCloud

I just saw that there’s a (beautiful) FINAL FANTASY VII DIRGE OF CERBERUS PLAY ARTS KAI – VINCENT figure in the SQEX store. The release date is set for July 2018. I think there might be a Dirge of Cerberus HD Remake coming out in 2018.
