Final Fantasy XV Version 1.20 adds character switching; Comrades update includes daily quests By Tony Garsow on December 12, 2017 at 8:07 AM

Final Fantasy XV‘s Version 1.20 update is now live and brings with it the ability to switch characters in battle. By activating abilities in the Technique tree of the Ascension menu, you’ll be able to switch to either Gladiolus, Prompto, or Ignis — each node costs 20 AP to activate. Each party member gains access to the battle style featured in their respective DLC episodes. When a battle concludes, you will automatically return to controlling Noctis.

Timed quests have also transitioned to an offline mode where you will still be able to collect QP to redeem prizes (like the Afrosword) but there will no longer be competitions for titles.

In an update to the multiplayer expansion Comrades, a new NPC will trade elemental shards collected from daily quests to get special buffs. Only one can be active at a time, and they include various parameter buffs, special statuses, or bonuses to crafted weapons.

We’ve compiled it all in the video below. Have a look:

    Sweet update to end 2017!!

  • Codes McGodes

Damn. I’m disappointed you can only switch characters mid-battle. :/ Would have been cool to run around as the other guys too. I feel that will be kind of annoying if you enjoy playing as, say, Ignis, and you have to switch to him every time you enter a fight.

  • •december

    Yes, that’s also today,
or at the very latest with tomorrow’s update

  • •december

Think about it, it makes total sense.
This is Noctis’ story, if you want to follow the brothers story thats the DLC.
Every Final Fantasy has a main protagonist or atleast an iconic one leading the party

  • stevenm281

But its written that the Comrades update is part of the 1.20 update, so
there shouldn’t be another update, that was it, especially with how big
    it was.

  • stevenm281

True, it would be sweet, but look at most past FFs, you only controlled other characters in combat, usually you control a specific character through the environments.

There were some exceptions, like FF12, and I agree that FF15 should follow that route, but switching during combat is better than just Noctis.

  • •december

I haven’t checked Comrades ye, pretty sure that was it
lol timezones are a thing with some of these updates too

  • stevenm281

I may play it tonight with my best friend once I’m done with work, hairdresser, and workout at the gym.

If not, we’ll play it Thursday.

  • Gabriel Hage

Hahaha this updates are forcing me to play this game forever.

  • Vallen

There is one new quest in comrades, you can do it as many times as you like – but you only get rewards from it once a day. Those rewards can later be traded for buffs via the new NPC.

  • Vallen

I like the update, being able to play the other dudes in combat is all I really needed. Walking around as Noct is still the most fun since his character model has the most animations for various terrains.

In other news, I changed my mind to re-play the game. Will definitely check out the new stuff each time, but will hold off to play the entire complete game until the end of 2018 once updates are finished. Each update improves the game quite a bit, so I rather consume the fully refined product rather than incremental bits. I now patiently shall await for Ardyn’s story to expand the game’s lore and keep my fingers crossed for an expanded Insomnia. Happy New Year ya’ll!!

  • •december

v1.20 did come with Comrades update
I was playing it and it was fun so lost track of time to respond.
But yes, holy shit I don’t remember the main game being this much fun either.
    Fuck all the whiney haters

  • •december

I don’t remember the main game being this much fun.
    man…
    Episode Ignis tomorrow I’m overwhelmed.

  • •december

I loaded the main game too and I was replaying chapter 13 I think… man!
Seems brand new to me too, I don’t remember the part of ch. 13 with the green poison gas that depletes Noctis’ life. Ardyn was really giving it to him, the torture lol

  • alef321

we need hard mode and vs 13 noctis costume.

  • Jedihillis

Have they improved on the camera with each update?

  • stevenm281

Is it me or Ignis, Gladio, and Prompto are quite OP compared to Noctis now….

Maybe the game needs to be rebalanced.

  • •december

Although contrived, I agree with versus 13 costumes
That is most likely something that can be added to Comrades.
The difficulty in Comrades was improved from the main game in my opinion

  • •december

sounds like good shit to me!
    more reason to use them

  • Codes McGodes

I mean I get why they did it this way. Just would have been nice to not have to switch every single time I go into a battle is all.

  • Codes McGodes

Agree on the timed quests. Idk if that’s what they’re doing with this update or not, but I hope it is. And if it’s not, then I hope they do. Would be nice if they eventually made the Moogle Carnival and Assassin’s Festival accessible via a sidequest eventually.

  • stevenm281

it still doesnt make sense for them to be stronger than the Chosen King.

  • Artemis Polara

Try doing the Adamantoise battle again, it takes FOREVER to have them move around the battlefield. Also in terms of DPS, it kinda depends. I’d say Noctis with Armiger or the ring has them all beat. (Would be cool if they allowed Noctis to use his second stage Armiger for normal battles though)

  • •december

    TODAY'S THE DAY, BOYS!!!
Episode IGNIS is out & downloaded.

  • nextpkfr

Glad this is in the game, but it’s disappointing you can’t develop each character as you progress through the game. Playing as Ignis/Gladio/Prompto will be precisely the same 1 hour in as they are at 200 hours. Sorry FF15, that’s not how you’re supposed do it.

It’s also pretty annoying it kicks you back to Noctis when a battle ends. Why? All the animations are in the game, it makes no sense.

  • stevenm281

yeah, noticed you can’t change their equipment, which is really disappointing.

They added the function to switch characters, which is really nice, but they didn’t balance anything nor did they alter the equipment menu to reflect each character gear, I guess they will update this through 2018, surely they wouldn’t leave it this way…. but then again, its Square Enix…

  • stevenm281

Then again, he shouldn’t be limited to those two options, I hate the ring since it has zero mobility, you need to stay idle to use it, and well Armiger is the “limit break” of this game, so there would be a problem if it wasnt the strongest ability.

And yeah, they need to add the other evolved Armiger, they could add a node on the Ascension grid to unlock it.

  • nextpkfr

Yeah the inconsistency really bothers me. It doesn’t feel like a party of characters you can switch between, it feels like separate combat modes completely detached from all the RPG systems integrated into the game. I’m not getting my hopes up they’ll fix it, I don’t know if this is the sort of thing Square cares about anymore.

  • stevenm281

damn, its done downloading but I must leave for work soon so…. will play it tomorrow as I have plans tonight… 🙁

  • Final Fantasy

YES! character switching i dont have a console but i do have a PC. and cant wait til i can do this. i am going to purchase some deluxe pack stuff over this game UGH release it already =D

  • Final Fantasy

oh thats weird… and here i thought i could just roam around hammerhead as prompto flirting with aranea XD

  • •december

PC players have the advantage definitely!
it’s worth the wait, but I have no regrets lol

  • stevenm281

My game is in Chapter 9 atm, do you think I’ll receive a prompt sometimes after I’m done with negotiating with Camelia, fighting Leviathan, etc.?

  • stevenm281

Is there any way I could private message you?

I’d love to add you on PSN and play Comrades with you, my best friend got tired of it and seem to have a disdain for it.

  • •december

I played chapter 9 and didnt get the prompt
    but holy shit
    holy shitt!!
i cannot describe how epic episode ignis is

  • stevenm281

maybe in Chapter 10 while on the train?

  • •december

having played the entire thing it makes sense that there is no prompt to play as Ignis.
Episode Ignis changes the entire story

  • stevenm281

but didn’t they say nothing there was canon?

Can’t wait to experience it tonight.

  • Codes McGodes

Wait, there’s no prompt? I mean I know there’s multiple endings but surely there’s still a section within the story that Ep Ignis should be played.

  • stevenm281

That’s Square Enix for ya, always complicated things, without thinking things through.

I love their games, but damn, sometimes it feels like they aren’t veteran of the industry, and their team are made of newbies.

  • •december

    definitely, but nope.
It makes sense that there isn’t
    atleast to me

  • •december

    It’s definitely canon.
    Alternate reality is canon

  • Codes McGodes

It doesn’t help that they basically called themselves newbies in that one interview recently. Idr what exactly they said, but something along the lines of being new to this.

  • Codes McGodes

So, to confirm, do Episodes Gladio, Prompto, and Comrades have prompts?

  • •december

That’s interesting I have not played up to the part where Comrades would be placed in the story yet, but yes screen prompts work for Episode Prompto (end of chapter 11, “In The Dark”, I believe) and Episode Gladio (end of chapter 6, I believe)

  • Codes McGodes

That’s strange then that Ignis doesn’t have a prompt too. Maybe they’ll patch it in later? I mean I know it has multiple endings, but Ep Ignis is just supposed be additional perspective during the Altissia battle right?
