A shame they couldn’t get David Boreanaz to reprise his roll as Squall ( probably due to his show Seal Team ). I hope George Newbern and Steve Burton NEVER get replaced, I can’t imagine anyone else voicing Cloud and Sephiroth, they’re both just perfect!

  • I gotta say Erholtz is a great voice for Squall

  • Respect.

  • Why no Bousch talk?

I can’t remember who it was that voices Seph the first time around, but god when I heard Newbern voice him for the first time it was like angels ascending. So goooood

  • Patrick Bateman

Right?! I fell in love right away haha like they NAILED it for Cloud and Sephiroth. It was Lance Bass from NSYNC who voiced him first, in the first Kingdom Hearts. He never spoke in cut scenes though, only in battle.

  • Patrick Bateman

i can’t really judge yet, i’ve only ever heard him briefly in trailers and this mini doc. I noticed the change right away though from the trailers.

I love the way JAT pauses before saying “Tee-dus” LOL He’s never gonna let us live that down
(For the record, I’m still a “Tide-us” kinda gal)

  • at the soup store

Didn’t he also voice him in KH2, or am I tripping? I’m just pretty sure I’ve heard his name associated with Squall for a while now

One thing that kinda hurts though is that when you get to watch the Eng VAs in the studio like in this video, you realise a lot of them are actually super interesting and expressive (look how WoL’s VA is moving when he acts!!!), but because a lot of time the mocap is based on Japanese expectations (a bit stiff and very performative) they don’t match. And it probably restricts their acting decisions. I wonder how a FF game would look if they did mocap that matched the english voices more.

  • MistwalkerKilyK

I agree. That’s why it’d be nice to finally have a Western-made mainline Final Fantasy game. They could revive that Project W thing.

  • Marcos

He did, David Boreanaz only voiced him on KH1, ever since KH2 and onwards was Dough.

  • What about in KH2 and Dissidia 1 and 2?

  • Thunder cunt

  • stevenm281

Holy shit, Steve Burton is HOT!

  • Patrick Bateman

really? had no idea thought he came back for Dissidia and KH2. don’t know why this time i could tell it was different, because he sounded similar in the other games. ( i havn’t played Dissidia for PSP in ages though, and KH2 even longer, also never played the second Dissidia game for PSP )

  • Marcos

Yeah David only was in KH1, Doug was called to reprise his role as Squall in Dissidia due to his work in KH2, he became the official voice beacuse of it.

  • Patrick Bateman

They should do what Kojima did with Metal Gear Solid 5. As in, the way he and his team still directed everything but the cast was Western. Usually in that series, it’s Japanese mocap, Japanese voices, and then English was the dub; but in MGS5, it was English mocap, English voices, and then Japanese was the dub.

Although to be fair, they’d have to get a different director than usual. The reason it worked so well is because Kojima is very in tune with Western sensibilities & it allowed him to collaborate well with the actors. Having a writer/director like Tetsuya Nomura (very distinctly Japanese style & notorious for super aesthetic, performative style) for it is asking for disaster.

I keep hoping that seeing the amazing way the West has received the English FFXV cast due to their openness will slowly make Square realise the untapped value in their western actors…

    I liked David more.

I’ve always found it funny how incredibly attractive most voice actors are, yet we don’t see their faces in their performances most of the time. Like I was swooning the entire time when I watched the FFXV Voice Cast video series. Ray Chase can do whatever he likes to me tbh. <33

  • Codes McGodes

I think it’s also the mentality of English voice over directors. It’s bizarre to me how forced so many English performances sound. Oftentimes it’s less acting and more “say the words and we’ll call it a day”. I think voice actors probably dial a LOT of their performances back because of the English directors. Ali Hillis is a great example. I thought she was great as Lightning in FFXIII and Liara in Mass Effect, but with each sequel they made her “cooler” and “darker”, which really just made her dull and lifeless.

  • Codes McGodes

I think almost all of the KH FF voiceovers were swapped out after the first game. Not sure why really, they had a lot of A-listers though so it could be they just didn’t want to commit to an multi-game series. Kind of like how some actors will shoot pilots but then move onto something else. KH was largely an experiment after all.

  • JSYK

I hope they put out another version but with the VAs of the villains!

  • Patrick Bateman

yes! George Newbern has no interviews talking about Sephiroth, it’s always about Superman.

When I saw the XV cast I damn near fainted, like what the hell lol Adam Croasdell is NEXT LEVEL

Yeah one of the biggest issues is the Japanese companies get final say on the acting, but generally only have a basic understanding if any at all of English and US/western social interactions. So when they get these low tier performances they think “yeah must be great”. Similar argument dub lovers have with sub lovers who don’t really understand Japanese language, culture or sensibilities.

SE just has a really bad localization team/person and some really bad US voice directors though.

  • Justice V

Could be most signed on to KH because it was Disney more than SE. After they realized it was going to be a Japanesey series and not a Disney tv-movie property I bet they were like nah I’m good heh.
