Something I’m being afraid of :
If I only played KH 1 and KH 2, will I understand the story of KH 3 ?

I see quite a few characters and names I don’t know about, and I feel like every KH games in between 2 and 3 will have to be played to understand what’s going on..
Can someone confirm or refute this ? I’m worried.

  • Giancarlo Rivera

Well unfortunately that’s true, you can read on the Wikis to understand what’s going on or you can just watch someone on YouTube do a let’s play. Honestly, at first the story didn’t need the side games, but when they started opening them more and more, the side games became pivotal to the storyline. It’d be best for you to try and catch on those whole while you can.

  • Dod

That’s what I thought.. and it’s pretty sad to be honest.
I will never be able to play all of the side games because I don’t have every consoles for them.. So yeah, I guess I’ll have to read through pages of lore before playing KH3.
Feels like what FFXV did with its side content. Thanks for the info mate !

  • Millennial Ingrate

Unreal Engine renders hair very badly…it looks so fake and poorly textured…oh well, I don’t own a console to play this so whatever.

  • Out of Curiosity

You don’t need every console. If you have a PS4 just buy KH 1.5+2.5 and KH 2.8

  • paracetamolianknight

Well, thanks to the compilations on PS3 and PS4 you can have nearly all of the side games (at least their stories) on the same console. But it’s true that it’s really anoying how the main storyline got scattered through the series even in the mobile titles…

  • Dod

Right, there’s that. But that’s a lot of money.. 😮
    Are these even necessary/enjoyable ?
Or can I just read though some pages of stuff ?

  • Out of Curiosity

You could but where’s the fun in that? At the very least buy 1.5+2.5. 2.8 insists of a movie, a small prologue for KH3 and a game whose only relevant contribution to the story was the final world. All this can be seen on youtube

  • Dod

All righty so you recommend buying the compilation and just watching some stuff on 2.8 before playing 3 ? I might do that.

  • Patrick Bateman

I feel ya, I 100%ed 1,2,chain of memories, half of Birth by Sleep, that 358/2 days game for the DS and started Dream Drop but honestly got soooo booorrreeeddd of going to THE SAME PLACES over and over and over and over, i gave up on the series.

Honestly all this series ever needed was 1,2,3 and Birth by Sleep, the rest imo are honestly a waste of time, development, money, and story. 358/2 was the beginning of me not caring anymore because of how dull and repetitive the gameplay and locations are, which is funny because I suffered through Chain of Memories/re:coded which is literally a re-port of the first game with some new story added ( I know it takes place after 1 and before 2 or something, but it literally just goes over the events of 1 again.. only with a new terrible combat system with cards…)

Kinda pisses me off I need to either play or watch the other games on youtube to fully understand 3 because i really don’t want to lmfao.

  • James Stine

That’s not a fault of the engine, it’s a fault of how developers utilize the engine.

  • Artemis Polara

Okay, so Nomura recycled Noctis’s design into Riku? I mean it looks good and all but it feels a little lazy.

  • Codes McGodes

How dare you expect that man to come up with two original designs in a ten year period!

  • Codes McGodes

    Short answer is no.

Do you remember playing KH2 without playing Chain of Memories first? Do you remember wondering what Sora’s promise to Namine was, who she was, how he knew her, who the pink haired dilly in the opening was, why only half the Organization shows up despite Sora never encountering them, etc? There’s a very strong chance that the entirety of KH3 will be that way.

I believe the average person is going to have this problem because I do not believe the average person played most, if not all of the side games because they didn’t realize they were continuations of this mess of a story. But KH3 is being built heavily off of the events of Birth By Sleep and Dream Drop Distance in particular, and they’re convoluted as shit. Unchained also has a lot of important information but god knows nobody’s played far enough into that one so we’re all gonna be lost. 358/2 Days is significantly less vital but one of the characters is supposed to be important…ish. Allegedly. Fragmentary Passage is just a prologue to KH3 really, not all that important tbh. Truthfully it’s just a glorified tech demo. And Coded is probably the only complete throwaway entry. I don’t think it has any key information in it except for what was in the bottle at the end of KH2, which by the time you play KH3 is irrelevant anyway since they deal with that in DDD.

There’s a pretty good chance the story is going to be shit if you didn’t play them because there’s gonna be a lot of totally random plot points thrown at you that you’ll be expected to understand. But, the silver lining is that I did play them, and based on what I played I can tell you that there’s a pretty good chance the story is going to be shit anyway. Seriously, even having played them all, the story still makes like no sense anyway. The series really went downhill over those side games imho. I’m sure it’ll be fun, but the story really has no chance.

If you want to catch up, you could play the 1.5/2.5 collection for PS4. It has KH1, CoM, KH2, Days, Coded, and BbS, and the 2.8 collection has Dream Drop, Unchained (partially), and Fragmentary Passage. So for around $100, you get all nine games (Days, Coded and Unchained are just cutscenes). Of those, you could probably get away with just playing BBS and DDD in order to get a full gambit of the story. BBS is actually pretty decent (despite being convoluted as shit), and I’d recommend it anyway. DDD was trash though imo. If you wanna know that story, I’d recommend watching it on youtube if you don’t wanna drop $40 bucks on it. Otherwise, if you’re looking for just a quick catchup: Everyone is Sora. Everyone else is Xehanort.

  • If he had got to use Noctis, a character along side Sora that he seen as his son, until the end of development then this wouldnt have happened to Riku.

  • After XV’s bust, KH3 is the spiritual redeemer of XV.

  • Artemis Polara

I don’t quite agree with that sentiment. But to each his own.

  • I don’t agree with people always telling me “this game isn’t for you” every time I ask for change in the game industry.

  • Artemis Polara

That’s not really the point but okay. You can dislike it all you wish. I enjoyed XV quite a bit despite its flaws 😛

  • 4FFAN

Well, they took Noctis from him. He’s just claiming back what is rightfully his.

  • The point is people told me the game wasn’t for me because I didn’t like how it told it’s story and had lot of point villains who all just get turned into demons. Or how the DLC had to tell the rest of the story.

  • Artemis Polara

Okie dokie? I’ve found those are all flaws too. Didn’t ruin the game for me though. Anyway your complaint here seems to be the defensive fanbase of XV. (Kinda like my problem is the overly harsh critics of XV) (By the way as a fun sort of aside (Which is totally a bait if you want to discuss it with reason) XIII sucks terribly and is the worst FF I’ve ever played)

  • Artemis Polara

I’ll jokingly go one step further: I enjoyed Dirge of Cerberus more than XIII (Then again I was kind of an edgy teen at the time) 😛

  • Dod

    Thanks for this.
To be honest, I was done with KH2 at a pretty young age and just forgot about KH after that. When I saw all of those side games coming out I thought they were just appetizers for fans waiting on KH3, so I didn’t care much about them (especially since they were out on multiple consoles, I knew I wouldn’t be able to play them anyway).
But I can see I was wrong and it kind of pisses me off because I can see this pattern Square Enix is using for most of their games. We talked about that, it’s called “Milking”. It means that I have to spend more money to play games I don’t really care about just to “understand” the main plot of the upcoming KH3, the only one I’ve been waiting for.
I saw some Let’s play on Youtube for a few side games and.. gosh I can understand why you got bored playing them, as I was already bored watching them. What I’ve found to be pretty sad is the vanishing of the entire Final Fantasy part of the game that made me love the KH series in the first place.

If I have some leftover money, I might consider getting the compilation before KH3 gets out.. but shame on you Square Enix, shame on you.

  • Codes McGodes

I strongly agree with everything you said. Before they started re-releasing games for other platforms, they literally had seven games spanned across six different consoles. KH1 and KH2 were the only games on the same platform. It’s like you said, they did the same thing for FFXV. I hate that they keep building these shitty “multiverses” for their biggest franchises. Like you can’t expect people to own six different consoles for one storyline. I think they probably realized this and that’s why they ended up re-mastering all of them for the PS3 and PS4, so that people could actually have access to them and maybe have a chance at actually understanding the storyline.

And yes, not enough people are commenting how Final Fantasy has all but vanished from the games. The only new FF character they’ve added since KH2 is Zack in Birth By Sleep. Dream Drop added a few TWEWY characters for some reason, but the last several games haven’t had any FF characters in them at all.

  • Dod

I’ve been watching a full recap of the entire storyline on Youtube and even the guy narrating it is confused on a lot of stuff. This is indeed convoluted AF, wow. I didn’t know it went THAT far. I wouldn’t be able to come up with plots like this, even with drugs involved.
As for the FF part of the game, it seems to be completely gone in KH3 from the few trailers I’ve seen. It’s sad because this relationship between Disney and FF was the reason KH was born in the first place. The building blocks of this franchise. Now it’s just become something else entirely.
I remember how hard it was to beat Sephiroth in the Coliseum, and how thrilling it was. Are we doomed to miss the old days ? 🙁

  • Codes McGodes

They may still bring back the FF characters for KH3, but even if they do they’ll almost definitely be sidelined. I remember during KH2’s development that each new FF character was like their own major announcement. Like Famitsu had entire spreads for Tifa, Setzer, Seifer & the gang, YuRiPa, etc. So far nothing for KH3. I imagine at the very least that Leon, Aerith, Yuffie and Cid will probably return in some form, but idk about anyone else. Sephiroth will probably be a super boss again (and Cloud by association), though I really wish they would throw some other villains into the coliseum instead of just recycling the same go-to bad boy. It is sad though because the first game was such a perfect blend of Disney and Final Fantasy, with just a pinch of original characters (Sora, Riku, Kairi & Ansem). Now they’re more focused on the original cast than anything else, which might not be such a bad thing if all the characters weren’t so forcibly connected.

But yeah, it is convoluted AF. Like Nomura was clearly making up everything as he went, but was TRYING to pass it off like it was one big plan.

    google lost soul aside.

  • 4FFAN

It’s an art style. They want it to look a little cartoony, not too realistic. If you look at the FF7 remake trailers the hair looks nothing like that.

  • 4FFAN

I wouln’t even call it a fault considering it’s intentional.

  • Millennial Ingrate

If a ps4 can’t match the quality seen in the early ps2 cutscenes, it’s just not good enough. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hRicv_vkUFI
Just can’t get over how much better it looked in the reveal: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v1wdOMD2L9A

  • Millennial Ingrate

you may be right…as it stands it looks kind of off.

  • Jesus Christ

they still in developement phase so i’ll wait for a bit.

  • 4FFAN

You have the right to think it looked better before but it still has nothing to do with the engine. The unreal engine can surpass the quality seen in ps2 cutscenes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=riQ6iHnGvQk
The development team just decided to go with a different artistic direction. They’re not aiming for something that looks like the CG cutscenes.

  • •december

Good to see Jesus Christ back

  • D.3ND

You can say the same for Sora when the first KH came out.

  • ShiruXIII

Damn… now I want to see Riku in “Older Noctis” style (long hair + epic beard) with the Kingly Raiment outfit lol.
