Tetsuya Nomura discusses Kingdom Hearts III release date, mini-games, the plans for DLC and more

In the latest issue of Weekly Famitsu, director Tetsuya Nomura discussed some of the upcoming mini-games fans can look forward to playing in Kingdom Hearts III. He also briefly touched on the subject of downloadable content, and elaborated a bit on why the release date was moved to January 2019.

Courtesy of Gematsu, here are the translations from the article:

  • The Frozen world follows the same timeline as the movie, and the scene depicted in the game will develop without change. “Let It Go” will also play out.
  • Anna and Elsa will not join your party, but the snow monster Marshmallow will lend players his power.
  • The Pirates of the Caribbean world takes place during “At World’s End”, the third movie. Details about the second movie, “Dead Man’s Chest”, will be touched upon in the synopsis.
  • Ratatouille is a mini-game in Twilight Town. If you succeed in cooking, you will make a dish that raises your statuses. You can collect ingredients throughout the game’s various worlds.
  • There is a music related mini-game in the Tangled world. Most of the mini-games were proposed by the staff. They’re basically putting in mini-games without stopping.
  • The Classic Kingdom was a project of Tetsuya Nomura, and he would like to add more mini-games if possible.
  • The release date being moved to 2019 was a result of favorable circumstances for various related parties. It was not to have more development time.
  • A secret movie is already being created, but it doesn’t have a final form yet.
  • They are considering implementing the recently released “Stories Connected to III” storyline summary videos onto the Kingdom Hearts III disc.
  • While its difficult to represent the state of development as a percentage, Nomura is worried that the volume of KHIII is too great and they won’t have enough space. And while the staff is turning some cutscenes into movies in order to reduce load times in those instances, their capacity is greater than expected.
  • Regarding voice-overs; since there is data for both voices and lip syncing, switching between English and Japanese voices is proving a difficult to support.
  • Currently they are not considering a Final Mix version for Kingdom Hearts III. There are plans for updates via downloadable content however, so any additional elements will likely arrive in that format instead.
  • And regarding downloadable content; while the details have yet to be decided, Nomura wants to expand gameplay rather than sell in-game items and the like. He thinks they will also release downloadable content as standalone rather than with a Season Pass. But only after the main story is completed.

Kingdom Hearts III is scheduled to release in Japan on January 25, 2019 and in North America and Europe on January 29, 2019 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
