Final Fantasy XV Episodes Aranea, Lunafreya and Noctis cancelled; production for Episode Ardyn will continue By Wazi the pa on November 7, 2018 at 11:29 PM

During the game’s special livestream event, Final Fantasy XV brand director Akio Ofuji has come out and revealed that production on Episodes Aranea, Lunafreya and Noctis will be ceased and cancelled.

Following this, Ofuji also said that production for Episode Ardyn will continue and is expected for a March 2019 release.

Read Ofuji’s official statement below:

“The Final Fantasy XV development team had been planning to release four new DLCs, together titled “The Dawn of the Future” in spring 2019. This refers to Episode Ardyn, Episode Aranea, Episode Lunafreya, and Episode Noctis. That said, the company has made an important directional change, and the decision has been made to re-examine these projects, concluding that production will be cancelled for Episode Aranea, Episode Lunafreya, and Episode Noctis, three out of the four DLCs planned. We are still developing Episode Ardyn, which continues to aim for a March 2019 release. I believe many fans have been eager to play these episodes, and the entire development team is regretful that we are unable to meet everyone’s expectations.

“Allow me to provide additional insight into what we mean by a directional change for the company. A new company called Luminous Productions was formed, centered around the staff who had previously been developing the main game as part of Business Division 2, and the have continued to work on the project since. The main purpose of establishing Luminous Productions was to create a studio that can deliver a completely new AAA title to the global market. And due to this directional change, the company has decided to focus our resources on the development of this AAA title. This resulted in the decision to cancel the production of three out of the four DLCs originally planned and introduced.

“Although this is extremely regretful, we hope everyone will continue to look forward to Episode Ardyn, which is still being developed in earnest. As for the new title currently in the works at Luminous Productions, we wish everyone will hold high hopes for our upcoming title as well.”

Final Fantasy XV is available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC via Steam.

I’m not happy with this news to say the least. I was looking forward to the other three DLC episodes.

  • Cloud Strife

I wanted to see episode Luna, but at the same time. . . I think it’s time to move on to other projects.

  • Iggy

    ….Seriously?

I expected to be underwhelmed, but this is a whole new level. This is some straight up Bioware-level sh*t.

So basically, we lost three episodes, gained a puny collaboration quest, Ardyn got delayed by three months, and absolutely nothing on the more robust mod tools – if they’re happening at all.

I don’t even wanna know what the f*ck happened this past year that resulted in support for this game being mothballed so damn hard.

  • Mehmed

Ahahahhahahaha FF xv is and was a joke all along.
    I it’s sad. Just sad.

  • stevenm281

all the time and resources put into silly things when they could have used that for the lost episodes…

While Episode Ardyn looks very promising, the two episodes I wanted the most was Lunafreya and Aranea.

We’ll never see the side of Niflheim, we’ll never see more of Luna…. so heartbreaking, I wanna cry.

  • James Stine

The collaboration was already planned two years ago. As for the mod tools, I’m not sure what they’re doing anymore since they never updated us on those.

  • Storm Wings

    Tabata quit that’s why.

  • 4FFAN

They should’ve at least kept Episode Luna since she’s supposed to be the female lead and only got half a second of screentime… Now we’ll never get to see where her character could’ve gone. Very sad news.

  • •december

    LMAO

  • Marco

This is a joke, really. They should not cancel Episode Luna. Seriously… She is about to become the worst female lead in a game just because we freaking know nothing about her! How is that supposed to be a lead role?! I like her and she deserves more.
Square again having the worst management ever. I hope this doesnt affect FF VII Remake with Square wanting to shove this Flopuminous on everything.

  • Marco

    Especially Episode Luna for me.

  • Randy Marsh

While it is sad that FFXV will never see its true vision fulfilled with the final DLCs, perhaps this is what is best for company and heck even for Tabata himself. As a person who has criticized Tabata and FFXV, it is clear that this game and its further DLC packages after release were stopping Tabata what he clearly enjoyed doing, making games. No one likes being stuck on a single project for a long time and that is what they will be known for only, artists in any field what to continue to expand their horizons and work on new things.

So in the end, good-bye Final Fantasy XV; you were flawed, got boring after some time, and were like the crazy stalker after awhile. However, I like any relationship at the start, it was romantic, we laughed, we cried, and in the end those good memories will never go away. Cheers to Tabata, may he have a bright future ahead of him.

    ALSO, RIP TYPE-NEXT LOL!

I’m calling it now: a Final Fantasy XV sequel… or prequel.

  • Justice V

Completely new AAA title doesn’t really sound like a prequel sequel. But I guess it could be. I’d be more expecting an actual non FF title to come from that division.

  • Artemis Polara

By the way two of my messages on here have been withheld due to poor language. That should say something about my feelings. (The comment you see below was my restrained response)

  • Justice V

Luna woulda been cool. Never really cared about Aranea’s story as we got enough from the main game and Prompto’s dlc for her. A little more coulda been cool, but wasn’t something I was dying for. Was curious how Ardyn’s story would take place. I hope we see him get betrayed and then looks like the quest Regis went on 30 years ago or whatever is because of Ardyn. Regis not recognizing him in Kingsglaive makes a lil less sense though unless in the actual game he’ll be wearing that hooded outfit from the super old trailers and showing him in his standard look is just so we easily recognize him now.

  • stevenm281

Aranea’s DLC would have been to show the final days of the Niflheim empire. Not really something specific for her backstory but for the antagonists.

  • Justice V

I would have rather had that as a Ravus specific episode. The little bit he had in ep Ignis was great, not to mention he had the best character design out of anyone in the game heh. Only thing I could think of from Aranea was her abandoning the empire and then escaping them as she started to help refugees.

Or her partaking in the bombing of Tenebrae which I guess could have been cool to explore Ten too.

  • Kiera

So sad, I really love FF XV and for me its a great Game. At least give us Luna. But I understand it, the Game will be still great for me and mybe they can build in the Content as Documents in the Main Game, yeash I know they will not…

  • NoctLightCloud

I am super sad about this. Makes me appreciate that XV at least came out and didn’t get cancelled when it was still VS13. I really really hope Sqex will change their minds and at least make Episode Luna. What a bummer…

  • NoctLightCloud

    Same here!

  • xMysticx

im not even surprised kinda he had it coming despite all the praise he got and all the defense fans provided on his behalf .
this was bound to happen .

  • Games Das

I can’t stop laughing…hehehe.I feel sorry for those who had any expectations from this piece of s***.Meanwhile, enjoying the f*** out of RDR 2 on my PS4 Pro after achieving PLATINUM in God of War and Spider Man on the HARDEST difficulty.

  • Krijn van Alten

Yes! There is finally an end coming to XV! This makes a XVI announcenent for the E3 a little bit more possible!

  • •december

well, all hope is gone then
after episode Ardyn there’s no point in paying Square Enix, or its sub-divisions any more money… What a waste.
They lost $33 million FOR A REASON!

  • •december

They had a $33 million LOSS for a reason… it’s over for squeenix

  • Krijn van Alten

Honey, after your comment about FF XIV and now this i really start to think that you are just here to troll.

  • •december

That says a lot about you, then… nothing about me

  • Ryuke

Phew, at least it’s finally over. Hopefully Episode Ardyn will give fans a fitting final piece of the story and everyone can move on. I’d like SE to go away and rethink the FF franchise and come back with a coherent awesome next entry, and don’t come back with a new FF title until they have a clear vision and know exactly where they are going and the story they want to tell.

  • •december

    we all would

  • Krijn van Alten

Of course this is related, I never doubted that. But your statement says ‘it’s over for squeenix’, while you seem to have no clue about how big the company actually is and about the total revenue it has. You don’t know where you talking about.

  • No one cares about the games you play or don’t play! If you don’t care about FFXV you shouldn’t even waste your time commenting on FFXV news!

  • •december

Do fans really want to support Square Enix after what they’ve done with their biggest franchise.

    I sure don’t.

  • Krijn van Alten

It really sounds like you think FF is the only franchise they are producing. Go Google/Wikipedia the company and educate yourself.

  • Average Afro

Last nail of dissapointment in the FFXV coffin. At least it’s over now…

  • xMysticx

save your breathe my friend . dont talk to this guy weather you disagree or not or try to elaborate on your point . you’re nothing but ffxv hater to him anyways
he is an immense tabata supporter . block headed at that

  • Noctis

He quit cuz I send him every now and then a trailer of Versus on his facebook messages

  • Krijn van Alten

    FF XVI here we come!

  • Noctis

Tabata quit cuz I send him facebook messages of versus every now and then

  • Krijn van Alten

If he really is supporting Tabata, than why than basing XV? Isn’t that unlogical?

  • Sothe Zephyr

    Slayed lol
At least now they can stop devoting time and money to this continuous dumpster fire.

  • xMysticx

i kid you not even he some times say something like this yet after that he completely fall over heels for tabata again reason why he wont follow my comments anymore

he was stalking me like no other

  • Noctis

    Who cares about Ardyn?

I will admit I was curious for Episode Noctis…..but now he leaves.

He knows why you know why everyone knows why Tabata is leaving.

  • Krijn van Alten

I do. They make this DLC especially for me you know!

  • Noctis

Nah really I don`t know why but I`m sad…I`m just sad. I passed all those years waiting for Versus reading searching on all sites that I could find any Info regarding Versus. But now I have a kid and a wife. And I thought at some point I will forget about this but honestly I can`t.

  • GoldenTriforce

How did the development of this game stay this much of a mess from start to end?

  • GoldenTriforce

Let’s just hope they don’t try to pull any create a character stuff for XVI

  • GoldenTriforce

Yes creating a brand new AAA development studio costs a lot of money. You have to buy office space, equipment, supplies, employ new people, employ the people who are employing the new people, and you won’t get a return on that investment for another 3-5 years

  • x5kevleo

What?. We have been loyal to this unfinished game for 12 years and now they do this?

  • Khem

so we will never see that happy ending with noctis and luna with their kids 🙁 I hope they implement a secret ending in episode ardyn and end the series with one final bang!

  • Games Das

    Oh you got butthurt,my child.

  • Rivershield

I would rather have episode Luna, she was the character that most needed it. Personaly, I have zero interest in Ardyn’s dlc (unless it has some Noctis/Luna moments). But, as many people have already said, at least it’s over. Time to move on.

  • Rivershield

Indeed. She was the character that most need a DLC.

  • Krijn van Alten

Two things: first of all the whole FNC concept was just too big for SE. The idea was nice, but looking back to it, it was quite clear that they overestimated the amount of resources they had to make multiple FF games at once. They first focused on the production of XIII until it release in 2009. In that period there was a small team working on Versus, but the idea was to bring that game in full development after the XIII release.
But a probably bigger problem was the unexpected failure of the first version of XIV in 2010. SE had put a lot of money in the development of that game, the first tech demo of ‘project rapture’ as the original code name was already was shown in 2005. So failure was not an option, they needed to fix that game as quick as possible. So a lot of the staff of other games, including people who were working on then Versus XIII, but also from other games like Dragon Quest X, were temporarily replaced to help the XIV team in the period 2010-2013, and Versus XIII development was put on hold.
So, in short: during the XIII development (2004-2009) Versus development was only limited and from 2010-2013 basically put on hold. So full development of the game only started in 2013. But it’s also clear that SE rushed the development of it. To compare it: XIII had a 5 year full development, the original XIV too. XIV RR was shorter, but they already had a full game that just needed to be fixed, not fully developed again. Versus XIII on the other hand was in 2013 a game that still needed a lot of world. But SE clearly needed money, no doubt XIV fixing had been expansive, so the decided to release a not completly finished project. And not as one full story, but as a whole collection of products with all parts of a story, just in order to make more money out of it obviously.
But fans are not interested in broken stories, so they try to fix that with those DLC projects. But very likely with a much smaller team, so much less posibilities to fix it all. And now they see that fans are not that enthisiastic on those DLC’s after all, they decided to end it and put their hopes in new games (VIIR and, hopefully XVI).

So, i hope this makes it all a little more understandable for you.

  • Eduardo Lopez

I agree, I wanted to play episode Noctis so bad to see the alternative ending -_- I’m so dissapointed. (Still waiting for the capeless plain black suit from the kingly raiment suit)

  • Gabriel Hage

No more Lunafreya playable, what a mess of a Final Fantasy game!
