Studio Istolia all but vanishes from the internet overnight [Update: studio closed, project cancelled] By Tony Garsow on May 13, 2019 at 6:51 AM

Studio Istolia, who was set to develop ‘Project Prelude Rune’ with former Tales series producer Hideo Baba, closed down their website, Twitter profile, and YouTube channel.

Announced last year, not much was known about the project, other than it was a RPG planned for the PlayStation 4 console. Things started to look uncertain when Baba left earlier this year, and it seems that the project will likely not move forward.

Update: According to a report from USgamer, Square Enix has closed Studio Istolia and cancelled Project Prelude Rune. They provided the following statement:

“Following evaluation of various aspects of Project Prelude Rune, development of the title has been canceled. Studio Istolia is no longer in operation and we have been taking appropriate steps to assign studio staff to other projects within the Square Enix Group.”

What in world did Baba do to anger SE this much that they would do all this stuff lol?!

  • Krijn van Alten

Very likely or money issues, or artistic differences

  • Wasn’t impressed by what was shown and I’m certainly not a fan of Baba’s output – his tenure on the Tales series made me enjoy the games less and Eternal Sonata is something I see as charming, but ultimately too tenuous for me to enjoy – yet this being likely dropped (unless it’s being revived as an internal project) feels mildly wistful to me. I really want Square Enix to stretch themselves a bit and bring their financial power to projects outside their regular IPs, so this is a blow to what I believe this company should pursue.

And yet Left Alive makes it.

  • Maybe while he was with SE he still kept ties with Tales/Namco people. And they suspected him of double-dealing.

Square Enix, where unless your name is Nomura, your project will either not be properly funded or outright canceled

Or if you name is Nomura it’ll just be pushed on the backburner and tossed around between a bunch of different hands until you have time to come back to it…maybe.
