As we draw closer to E3, Square Enix has seemingly slapped a padlock on their lips and thrown away the key in regards to certain upcoming games. One noticeable silence is on the front of Lightning Returns, which saw a short media burst back in March that at the time seemed to be the start of a more open, resource-heavy period of marketing for the game before drying up again just as suddenly.

According to the Square Enix music blog of Mitsuto Suzuki, a member of the band Language (the singer Kaori) was brought in to do some background music mixes for the upcoming Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII. Roughly translated, it says that these mixes fit very well with the environments they are supposed to play in and that they are very exciting (for him personally, although this could also mean they are high-energy). A few weeks ago the website FFDream got to send someone over to Japan for a live interview with Motomu Toriyama and Yoshinori Kitase about several upcoming games, including Lightning Returns. Hidemi Matsuzuka posted a picture today of the Lightning Play Arts KAI figure from Lightning returns, all painted up. The picture was posted along with the quote "Painted Lightning! On its way to Mr. Nomura's supervision." This implies it might not be the final version of the figurine, so don't get too excited if you like it.

The French Square Enix Facebook page just added a photoset with lots of new screenshots. Some of them are those we saw earlier today but a bit clearer. We haven't gotten them in English yet, but in the meantime here are the French versions! The Lightning Returns website updated today with a few new screenshots in addition to the Dead Dunes stuff we got to see the other evening. The Dead Dunes is dotted with numerous ruins and Lightning can slide around to explore the landscape, arriving at the bottom of the dunes in a jiffy. Lightning Returns will eventually see a digital release, according to Director Motomu Toriyama.
In a new interview published on Final Fantasy Network, Toriyama penciled in a few more details on the game as well as a confirmation that the title would see a digital release. Joining the Play Arts Kai series will be Lightning in her Savior's outfit - the third Lightning to be made available through Square Enix Merchandise following FFXIII and XIII-2. The figure design - as penned by Tetsuya Nomura - is still in a prototype stage, and according to Hidemi Matsuzuka has been quite difficult to develop under Nomura's supervision.

Final Fantasy series art director Isamu Kamikokuryou celebrated his marriage this week, complete with several Square Enix staff in attendance.
Even though it was a personal celebration, Kamikokuryou brought out a new drawing of Lightning in her FFXIII garb. The portrait was up for auction at his wedding and ended up going for ¥15,000.

This past week, Mitsuto Suzuki - one of the game's three composers - shared a bit of an update on the soundtrack front. Following the last bit of media to come out on Lightning Returns, Square Enix has finally made available several more screenshots that were previously exclusive to Famitsu.
