NieR Automata Review
NieR Automata is a brilliant game, and I’m still in a semi-stupor that it’s actually a thing that exists. The original NieR, which released on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 back in 2010, wasn’t reviewed in the highest regard. Most of the complaints were about the gameplay and combat, though praise was given to the unconventional story presentation and excellent score. The sum total earned it middling marks, and sadly, the game was overlooked by many. It seemed like NieR's…

Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue Review
With the road to Kingdom Hearts III still shrouded in darkness, Square Enix has seen fit to put out another HD collection to hold fans over with Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue. A mouthful, I know, but it's the final piece of the puzzle needed before the series can continue - or so we hope. Here's what you need to know: packed inside this release is a story told in three parts. An HD remaster of the original…

Final Fantasy XV Review
A lot’s happened in 10 years but we’re finally here. Final Fantasy XV is real, it’s in our hands and we’ve played it to completion. It’s kind of hard to believe. Armed with a wonderful soundtrack, a big open world and an action-based battle system, Final Fantasy XV represents a big step for the series. After years of expectations, troubled development, a generational leap and staff changes along with a host of other difficulties and delays the game has shaped up…

Final Fantasy XV Energizing Elixir Review - A Kweh-k Thirst Quencher!
After a long day of work I started to feel it. My energy levels were low. A headache was coming on. I felt sluggish, weak. Certainly not prepared to trek the wide world of Eos with Noctis and co. Would I be able to survive the day to make my first venture into the world of Final Fantasy XV, or was it all in vain?  As luck would have it, a quick check of my inventory revealed a potential save. A gorgeous…

World of Final Fantasy Review
Right now is a particularly exciting time for Final Fantasy, here, on the eve of its next major numbered title. Final Fantasy XV hopes to bring a new level of realism to the series typical fantasy-based stylings, and with it is a presentation that evokes much of our own world. So here we find ourselves in the final countdown… and… hello, what’s this? World of Final Fantasy is a hop out of the gate before FFXV, and couldn’t be any more…

Dragon Quest Builders Review
When Square Enix first announced Dragon Quest Builders, I was skeptical. How could they marry the traditional trappings of a classic RPG with the mechanics of a typical free-roaming sandbox game? Were they just using the popularity of other building titles to make something quick and easy? Does this game even fit into the Dragon Quest series and lore? I found myself digging deep into these questions and more during my time with the North American release - out now…

Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV Review
Final Fantasy and film-making have a long, storied history spanning back eleven years now. When Squaresoft penned their first film with Final Fantasy: Spirits Within, many were disappointed. How could something like this be considered "Final Fantasy"? A few years later, Square Enix decided to try their hand again - this time with Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, which was praised for its fan service but fell flat as a proper film. 2013 saw the conversion of Final Fantasy Versus XIII…

I Am Setsuna Review
I AM SETSUNA has big shoes to fill. Newly-minted studio Tokyo RPG Factory are a big fan of the classics -- going so far as to proudly proclaim that they’d love to return to a bygone era of Japanese-style role-playing games. Well, you don’t get more classic than Chrono Trigger, Squaresoft’s masterstroke from the 16-bit era that accrued a metric ton of accolades an insatiable hunger for more - even after quasi-sequel Chrono Cross, ephemeral Chrono Break, and a modest remaster…

Unboxing Square Enix's Valentine's Mystery Box
We got the opportunity to get our hands on one of the 200 Valentine's Mystery boxes that Square Enix is selling this year. The contents of the box are different to the ones sold in the past so you don't have to worry about getting an item twice. Each Mystery Box was sold for about £45.99 and is said to contain contents valued at a total of at least £55. You can watch one of our staff members unbox the mystery…

Final Fantasy Explorers Review
FINAL FANTASY EXPLORERS is Square Enix and Racjin’s newest entry into what has become a “monster hunting” genre of games. The success of Capcom’s aptly-named Monster Hunter series has brought forth a multitude of similar titles like Toukiden, God Eater, and Square Enix’s own Lord of Arcana. What Final Fantasy Explorers does, as one might easily imagine, is marry classic Final Fantasy series gameplay staples with Monster Hunter’s. How does it all work out, you ask? Well, there’s no doubt that…

Dragon Quest Heroes: The World Tree's Woe and the Blight Below Review
Dragon Quest. Most of the discussion around the series these days seems to be a lack of localization. Not only is the newest “mainline” title Dragon Quest X missing in action, but several remakes of classic titles have been forgone. Has Square Enix given up on Dragon Quest in the west? Will Nintendo localize? OMG! Should I start my “localize Dragon Quest XI” fan campaign yet? Hold up... Toss out that baggage for just a minute... Here’s an actual Dragon Quest game coming…

Hitman: Agent 47 review - Beautifully executed?
Imagine there is a genitically enhanced man, who is stronger, deadlier and more intelligent than others. He is the result of a secret science program, creating the ultimate assassin. Then there is a secret society called Syndicate, which tries to seize the genetic technology with all means, to form an army of genetically engineered soldiers. The key for this is inside the head of the the former project lead, who can only be found with the help of his daughter, who…

Final Fantasy Type-0 HD Review
There’s a lot to say about Final Fantasy Type-0 HD. Trapped in Japan for years, the game has finally made its way over to fans in the west. Although it’s not quite the portable release many had hoped for its big screen conversion is nothing to scoff at – rather it’s a welcome return to a game some have already played and a brand-new opportunity for those who haven’t. When I say there’s a lot to talk about with Type-0 HD,…

Final Fantasy X|X-2 HD Remaster Review
Of the many early PS2 titles that are now viewed as having helped to define the RPG genre in that high-quality era, Final Fantasy X remains among the best. The 2003 follow-up, Final Fantasy X-2, isn’t as favorably regarded, but Square Enix's decision to include it alongside its all-time-great sibling as one package in Final Fantasy X | X-2 HD Remaster isn’t unwelcome. Both games have been brought together on the PS3 and PS Vita a decade after their original…

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII Import Review
At its core Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII is an intriguingly designed RPG weighed down by a bloated and often nonsensical story that feels bare even after fifty hours of game time. Despite best intentions much of what the game does ends up feeling generally half-baked, and while combat and customization are the best that this title has to offer, Lightning Returns ultimately ends up an experiment that is likely best not revisited in the future. While I found Final Fantasy…

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn Review
The vast odyssey that has been the creation, destruction and now rebirth of Final Fantasy XIV has finally come to an end. Three years on from the game's original, fractured release, Square Enix has managed to pull together something most companies wouldn't have even attempted - a full mea culpa reboot of the game. Many believed it couldn’t be done, but here we are with the failings of the original version behind us - and what we get is an…

Kingdom Hearts 1.5 ReMIX Review
Oft touted as one of the defining titles of the PlayStation 2 era and part of Squaresoft's perfect last hurrah, it’s almost hard to believe that over a decade has gone by since the release of the original Kingdom Hearts. For many choosing their favorite entry in the series is a difficult task, but for me the choice is a little easier - the very first entry will always have a special place in my heart. Adventuring with Sora, Donald and…

Kingdom Hearts 3D [Dream Drop Distance] Review
Since 2002, Kingdom Hearts has been one of Square Enix's premiere franchises. Spanning several games and platforms even in other mediums, the series and its risky blend of Final Fantasy and Disney properties has earned it a place among some of the more iconic works in gaming. Two mainline entries and several handheld spin-offs later, we’re now faced with Kingdom Hearts 3D for the 3DS – which is being touted as the true follow-up to KHII. Without a proper “III”…
