Final Fantasy XV detailed in Game Informer By Erren Van Duine on April 5, 2016 at 6:36 PM

The latest issue of Game Informer has the scoop on Final Fantasy XV. We’ve picked up our own copy of the magazine and compiled some of the important (mostly spoiler-free) highlights for you below. To read the rest of the article and enjoy several new screenshots from the game, please consider supporting Game Informer by subscribing or picking up this month’s issue on your own.

  • When the team was starting Final Fantasy XV, the brand image wasn’t very clear.
  • Tabata believes the franchise can’t move forward without setting pride aside – he knows fans still have hope in where the series could go.
  • Tabata and his team at Business Division 2 identified three core qualities they believe define the FF brand: challenging the status quo, providing an exceptional experience and using cutting-edge technology. He thinks FFVII was the last game in the series to use all three points. FFXV is a make-or-break moment – a chance to bring back lapsed fans and new ones into the fold.
  • When moving to FFXV, the game disconnected from Fabula Nova Crystallis. Additionally, Stella from Versus XIII was shifted significantly and while the team tried to keep as much as they could from the original concepts they took this opportunity to shape XV into a full range of imagination.
  • FFXV‘s story focuses on friendship, destiny and legacy.
  • As soon as you start the game there is a battle in a location yet to be revealed. This is similar to FFII where you start the game right with a boss battle. It also acts as a tutorial before going into chapter 1.
  • Chapter 1 picks up right after the opening sequence with Noctis and friends on the road to Altissia. The Regalia breaks down in the region of Leide and the party has to get out and push the car to the nearest station. This is the first area where players will encounter the open world.
  • Early on Noctis and friends meet both Cid and Cidney and she tasks them with several quests while the car is being repaired.
  • Fantasy based on reality idea is still intact – at the Hammerhead station an instrumental version of Neil Young’s “Heart of Gold” can be heard playing in the background.
  • The beginning of the game is said to be heavy with familiar imagery before bending things toward fantasy and wonder.
  • There are dialogue choices in the game that leave to different outcomes. For example Noctis was able to ask his friends for advice rather than asking for a discount or loan from Cidney. The reward for these options seem to revolve around status bonuses similar to eating or resting.
  • Combat has improved since the demo – controls are more responsive, and weapons can be swapped on the fly using the d-pad. GI saw tabs for swords, daggers, lances, firearms, shields, royal arms and elemental spells. There was also a category called machines though their purpose is unknown.
  • Magic spells are collected like a resource and can be recharged at various places on the map (think FFVIII‘s Draw system).
  • The Regalia (the car) has a trunk that acts as party storage. You may need to pay money to gas up from time to time but the cost isn’t crazy. The car radio plays remixes of classic FF themes such as “Final Fantasy.”
  • On your way to a destination, Prompto may ask to stop and take a photo. His pictures can be seen during camp and can be shared on social media. Should you continue to take pictures with Prompto his photography skills will improve.
  • All four of the main characters have special talents – Noctis can fish, Ignis can cook and Gladio has survival instincts – and all of these can be “leveled up” by continued play.
  • When you call a summon they won’t always do the same thing. They are entities that exist in the world itself. So depending on the situation they will do different things. For example, Titan sometimes will run up and hit an enemy, sometimes he will throw boulders at the enemy and it’s possible he will even give up and leave the battle. They will also act differently in a dungeon than they will in the overworld.
  • The black dog seen in trailers is a faithful servant. Its name is Umbra.
  • Noctis and friends encounter Niflheim’s Ardyn fairly early on while en route to Altissia.
  • There are four quest types: for fun (fishing/chocobo racing), main story, monster hunts and regional quests. Currently there are over 200 quests in the game but the team are working to add more.
  • Later on you can synthesize magic to create more powerful versions like Blizzara.
  • Weapons can also be improved with materials collected in the world and won from battles. The main way to improve yourself, however, is through ability points which accumulate as you level up.
  • You have the choice on how you upgrade Noctis and his companions like strengthening auto-dodge or teaching them new commands. It’s an effort to shape the player’s play style.
  • Luna is the presence that supports Noctis in order for him to fulfill his destiny. She’s also the type of heroine you want to meet but can’t quite reach.
  • Tabata has no intention to create sequels or anything out of this. He wants people to purchase the game to be able to enjoy it for a long period of time. That doesn’t necessarily just mean additional content but other things to create an interesting experience.

Final Fantasy XV is due out for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on September 30th worldwide. For more updates on the game check out our on-going coverage here.

  • Jchill

in all seriousness the game finally has a release date and we still know jack shit about the english version, why?

  • MONTER HUNT! Yeeeeeeeeeeeah! Gonna them down!

  • D.3ND

    WorldWide Release……period….

  • Luke Watts

‘The game disconnected from Fabula Nova Crystallis’ – good. If I hear the words fal’cie or le’cie even once I’m gonna throw a bitch fit.

  • Xervath

By ‘English version’ you mean what, exactly?
Other than it being a different language, there really isn’t a whole lot to add to it?
The game is identical save for how it “sounds”
(Or am I missing the point?)

  • Rene Rodriguez

English voice cast is probably what he/she meant.

  • CRIMSON-XIII

so people dont ask the voice actors about story details. e3 in LA will give us english trailer for sure this year. but thats it.,

  • Awato

“She’s also the type of heroine you want to meet but can’t quite reach.”
    THIS HURTS ME 🙁

  • D.3ND

    Good, I’m liking even better.

  • Awato

Unless I’m misinterpreting, doesn’t it just imply that she won’t have that much of a presence at all?

  • Somnus92

I’m going to subscribe to GI now 🙂

  • D.3ND

Think of her as that one popular person that you know, but you couldn’t talk that person because there always a crowd of people blocking your way.

  • Awato

That makes sense!! ^0^ My interpretation skills aren’t the best lol

  • D.3ND

Or keep tabs with GI for this month, new info is coming tomorrow.

  • Awato

Same! Just did it now!! Waiting for my digital subscription to activate TT_TT The wait is nervewracking!!

  • Somnus92

The wait is so worth it! GI and FFXV outdid themselves in this month’s edition.

  • Phantom Sword

Tabata said magic is NOT like the draw system.

  • All Seeing Eye

Tabata and his team at Business Division 2 identified three core qualities they believe define the FF brand: challenging the status quo, providing an exceptional experience and using cutting-edge technology. He thinks FFVII was the last game in the series to use all three points.

As a big VIII, IX and X fan, I have to say that I disagree with this 100%.

  • FF7 was big, but the ones to follow were definitely much more better in there own ways. FF9 can easily top them all if it looked as good as X and had GOOD voice acting, but even without that stuff it was top shit.

  • Lucas Nóbrega Maia

well , it is in Fabula Nova Crystallis , but it seens it deals with the eidolons and gods itself , which is way above L’Cie and Fal’Cie

  • All Seeing Eye

I’m kinda torn about a voiced FFIX. It would make the interaction between Zidane and Garnet more outstanding, the Active Time Events would be livelier, but I shudder when I think about a voiced Quina.

  • Jchill

The actors don’t have to answer, and I’m sure people are still asking for story details anyway

  • stevenm281

I went on their website and you cannot just purchase one issue, you need to subscribe to 12 or 24 issues and I’ve got no interest there.

How can I acquire one copy of the magazine?

  • stevenm281

it just reinforce his statement with GameSpot that she is no longer a guest party member.

  • So since dpad switches weapons what do we press to alter Noctis attack pattern of his combos

  • Im impressed. Its still an rpg. I’m legit happy.

  • stevenm281

They always said it was an Action-RPG, I don’t get why people were worried about that…

It’s still a core FF game, it will always have RPG roots.

  • What about 6?

  • 9 had the best battle system of them all. 10 best LBs and summons.

  • Quina tried to troll that game. She ruined a lot of scenes.

  • You get it free here wtf?

  • Means we’ll. In search of Schala her the whole game.

  • stevenm281

6 was released prior to 7, therefore, irrelevant to Tabata’s comments.

  • I wasnt worried it be an action rpg i was worried about characters customization, battle tactics, shop inventory, weapon lists, exploring, skill trees, limit breaks, all the stuff that gets nixed or streamlined sometimes.

  • stevenm281

gotcha, well, put your mind at ease now and embrace the hype wagon!

  • No i mean why if it was good arent they taking more cues from it? 7 was good but 6 is different from it and in a lot of ways theres ideas in it needed in this day and age. The daul weilder weapons for example.

  • Legit point. Who are the voices?

  • Maybe the extra 3 yrs was doing the bi language thing to all the version of the game.

  • I was on the hype wagon, its just over the course of my life whenever I get too happy about something something comes and ruins it. Before the magic thing it was that Luna never fully joins the party before that it was only Noctis is able to do magic before that it was only Noctis is playable before that was the long ass 9 year wait. And before it was other worries and problems with 13 and stuff irl.
Picture finding 100$ then dancing out of happiness then you get robbed for the money. Then you get home and get chewed out by your parents for going to a bad neighborhood where you got robbed. You get put on punishment and cant get XV and the game sells out by the time you get off punishment.

  • stevenm281

he already mentioned in past interviews that 6 inspired him for 15.

Now, he’s not talking about which FF is best, or which one inspired him, he just said that the LAST FF that was very ground-breaking was 7, and he thinks that he managed to do something as impactful with FF15.

  • Dongmatteezzy

FFVII is a ground-breaking game that marked itself from the history of PS, Games, and the history of the FF franchise. I think he said that because even now FFVII is a game that is still popular and loved by all but, that doesn’t mean that FFVI, FFVIII, FFXI, and FFX are bad games.

  • No I’m. Just just i hope down the line they draw more from 6 abd also 9 for inspiration. Again. We need a fully blown everyone is magical story again.

  • JLV

It’s actually already there in the new demo. Not many knew. The way you toggle your L3 stick defines the attack patterns. However there are only 4 attack patterns for every weapon. Do watch a video that shows the player manage to copy the aerial combos shown in the Niflheim trailer. But chaining them is kinda hard since you have to wait for the animation to finish before a new input.

  • Randy Marsh

The “challenging the status quo” is the key thing on what you’re missing here.

Let’s face it VIII and IX, aside from the cutting edge technology and exception experience, the innovation was lacking. As a follow up to VII, VIII is extremely mediocre, while it did challenge to status quo in a sense, what was done in VIII was an extremely controversial one and was received negatively, it was kind of FFXIII of its days.

IX is an amazing game, but it did nothing to challenge what came before in VII and VIII, although it was a extreme improvement over FFVIII. It reused the same battle system which at this point was 8 years old, it reused the Magicite system in a sense with the equipment system, used improved versions of FFVIII models, while the story is amazing, it is cliched in certain ways. So I see where Tabata is coming when not mentioning those games.

FFX…meh, idk Tabata is weird..I guess he doesn’t want to acknowledge it as the series’ first hallway adventure. <- Please do not take this seriously, I love FFX and did a ton of things Tabata described as qualities.

  • Jesus Christ

    No intentions for sequels?

Imagine Me doing the ghetto MmmmHmmm.

    Right.

  • That a new dance like the Harlem Shake or the Superman?

  • Synthesizing weapons and magic, skill tree character customizing, gambits, pick-a-path dialogue, all good things!
Though the summons sometimes doing nothing worries me. Why would that happen? Is it like if you summon Titan in a cramped space so he gives up cause there’s no way to do anything without killing you too with a cave-in?
Guess the Duscae demo was the start of chaper 1 right after the brawl and boss in Noctis’ town with Behemoths.

  • Luke Watts

Huh? The article said it is DISCONNECTED from Fabula Nova Crystallis. But your saying it IS set within this universe? Where are you getting that info from… Obviously the game was originally intended to be, but not any more. They ditched it’s connections to 13… so if they ditched the number without actually separating the title away from the core concept of 13… well.. that’s just wrong.

Someone please shed some light on this for me as I was quite sure that they where leaving the 13 universe behind.. in the dust.. face down.. where it belongs.

  • grapes9h5

100% best explanation you can give on this, and my thoughts exactly. And I say that while having my favorite FF being IX. IX in no way challenges the status quo, except that it bucks the setting styles of VII and VIII, but it does so in favor of creating a world suited for all the intended homages and allusions to past FF games.

But it beats out VI and VII for my favorite FF because it excels in that “exceptional” area in the very ways it takes the best of the best in past FF’s and breaths such life and soul into it all. It’s a transcendent story that deals with “existence” as its central and all powerful theme. I hope XV can deliver something similarly poetic and potent.

X was innovative, but not in the best direction. It paved the linear and overly cut-scene driven style for XIII to be built upon.

  • Somnus92

Tabata did stated that FFXV is not a part of FNC anymore, however, it does derive some elements from FNC.

  • Dongmatteezzy

There is no L’cie or Fal’cie in FFXV so it kinda disconnects to that. The only two things that are common in Fabula Nova Crystallis and FFXV is the power of Crystals and Goddess Etro. Well those are the only two things that are common in those 3 installments. FFXIII – L’cie, Fal’cie, Crystals, Gods, and Goddess Etro. FFType-0 – L’cie, Fal’cie, Crystals, Goddess Etro. and FFXV – Crystlas and Goddess Etro only.

  • So mid-combo you alter attack patterns like in Duscae 2.0 put pushing L3? That’s hard. Especially if you running and attacking.

  • What will L2 and R2 do? Can we make those short cuts for Magic and Skills?

  • I can’t wait to max out Prompto’s photography skills! hehe.

  • I wanna know if maxing out Gladio’s survival skill makes it so he find rare potions in the field.

  • Codes McGodes

No intentions for sequels huh? THANK fucking GOD.

Not that I believe a word of it. If FFXV is successful, there’ll be plenty of terrible sequels in true Squeenix fashion to tide us over until FFXVI. Hell, even if it’s widely hated, there’ll be terrible sequels.

  • Adrian

It’s probably for enclosed spaces as you said, or places where the summon wouldn’t fit. I imagine they also might prevent them from participating in certain event battles for balancing reasons.

  • Adrian

Gamestop might sell individual copies at their stores. Not sure though.

  • I think even if it’s loved they won’t pull a 13-2 or LR and do a sequel right away.
I think they’ll focus on KH3 and FF7R and get that money first then either do a 15 sequel or move one to 16. They something make mistakes but unlucky 13 is likely the last time they try to use 3 games to get right what should be been done well once.

  • Yeah. I guess if it’s a one on one fight with the last boss the summons would be like “man up, do it yourself, it’s one on one. Have some honor.” And then the boss cheats and summons minions anyway LOL.
Maybe each summon will have height and areas they will work best in. Like Titan for the world map, carbuncle for carbuncle caves.

  • If theres no sequel show this entire world in one game. I wanna see an African. Continent since its based on reality.

  • Codes McGodes

I’d like to agree with you, but at the end of the day they’re still a business, and reusing assets to make sequels is an easier and more cost-effective way for them to make money to pave the way for the next big game. Time will tell, but every main series game has had at least one sequel ever since FFX-2, Not to mention the sequel to FFIV and the whole compilation of FFVII.

Lord knows I hope the wait for ff16 isn’t long off though. I can’t wait another five years.

  • Randy Marsh

Etro was removed according to an old interview back late 2015. The status of the “soul” and “soul crystals” are left up to question atm.

  • Yuntu

I doubt that, they only did it very “aggresive” for 2 games … and Tabata already has his next project in early stages (atleast it sounded like that when he was asked about Type-1 and the he wouldn`t do it and he had another project after XV).

  • Yuntu

Chapter 0 will probably be Regis fighting the snake lady from the anime while she attacks Noctis – that`s just a guess of mine though. But they did point out often enough that accident is important.

Duscae demo is non existent in the game, they only borrowed the car breaking down from Chapter 1 – your car won`t break down multiple times. So basically Duscae like in the Demo will not exist in the game in the same way.

  • Yuntu

What he meant is that according to the direction you push it each weapon will do different combos. I believe L-Stick back and attacking with the Greatsword will activate the Tempest move from the Duscae demo.

  • Yuntu

I got the option for a single digital copy at Gamestop.

  • Yuntu

They said the game will go more and more fantasy the more it progresses and start of more realistic in chapter 1.

  • Yuntu

No it was completly rewritten to remove itself from that branded concept.

  • Yuntu

Etro isn`t really in the game anymore and crystals are a part of every FF, so yeah I would say FNC is in no connection to XV.

  • Yuntu

    Just wait.

  • Noctis

thank god for what? Are you dumb? nobody will force anyone to buy additional story. Please take your time and slap your face for me.

  • Jordan Be

After XV, Tabata wants to make Type-1 😉

  • Yuntu

No he already said that Type-1 isn`t his project.

  • stevenm281

as Yuntu pointed out, Tabata’s next project isn’t Type-1, he confirmed in a past interview that his next project isn’t Type-1 but that it is a massive RPG for console.

  • stevenm281

maybe not rare potions, but at least something.

  • stevenm281

I live in the middle of nowhere, unless purchased online, I’m doomed.

  • stevenm281

I went on their website and I can’t find it.

  • Yuntu

Hmm maybe try the mobile app for GameInformer? They also have multiple sources listed on their own site announcing the issue where you might be able to get a single issue.

  • stevenm281

no mobile signal much here so I don’t bother buying a smartphone lol.

Can’t wait to move in Summer 2017.

  • Miira Estallum

Oh great TBT finally revealed the dog’s name! What about the white dog? If the black dog’s name is umbra, i guess the white dog’s name would be lux??

  • Yuntu

Ohh that’s bad luck, hope you find the right one.

  • Noctis

Who knows the site jpgames.de and their administrators?

  • stevenm281

they wrote it would be available on April 6, we’re the sixth, and in the Table of Content of the April 2016 issue, they mention New Direction of FF, and FF15, so I thought it was the right one but the picture and month were wrong.

I guess it’ll be available later today.

  • Average Afro

I didn’t know this. Guess who’s playing more of the Platinum Demo today… Me.

  • Jordan Be

Are you sure about that ? Source ? I’m interesting 😉
Because, Tabata has already showed artwoks about Type-1 : http://www.gamekult.com/actu/final-fantasy-type-next-plus-dinfos-A145345.html
He said too : Type-1 will be in production after FFXV.

  • stevenm281
  • Jordan Be

    Thank you ! In fact, I love Type-0, that’s why I really think a Type-1 on PS4 with a good budget and a other name ^^ We will see 🙂 But now it’s FFXV time, I can’t wait !!

  • alexis

“All four of the main characters have special talents – Noctis can fish, Ignis can cook and Gladio has survival instincts – and all of these can be “leveled up” by continued play.”

    THAT’S NOT ALL FOUR LOL
IS PROMPTO REALLY THAT USELESS :'(

  • Ricky

Would anyone know if GameStop has this issue available at their stores already? I’ll try to call later today but wanted to ask if anyone has purchased a physical copy of the magazine.

  • Robert Stukenbroeker

He is a photographer it seems.

  • Zenobia Joyner

That is BIG fat NO from me. he’s my favorite out of the other three and i can’t love he more than i already do i think i need help i’ll talk someone 🙂

  • alexis

    He’s my favorite too 😀 <3

  • alexis

    (oops replied to wrong person)

  • alexis

Sounded out of place compared to fishing, cooking, and survival skills so I wasn’t sure if that counted as one of those “special talents” haha whoops

  • JLV

Not really, you just have to push circle and just flick the stick in 4 directions. It’s even easier if you hold circle and time your stick flick with the animation. Good luck. Even I haven’t master it properly.

  • JLV

Yup. When you travel you’ll get some prompts from Prompto that he wants to take a group photo or something like that.

  • Yuntu

I think it says on the GI site that the physical copies for subscribers will arrive in 1-2 weeks. So I somewhat doubt GameStop has it before the subs.

  • Ricky

Oh ok thank you so much for the info! 🙂

  • LTweetsU

Why, he is the photogropher, silly!

  • Yuntu

I think they will use the “Type-?” games for new directors to play around with the franchise. Or for spinoff ideas they fear to put into a mainline game.

  • Yuntu

I think “hobby” would be a better word for those activities. Though I wonder what they mean with “surivival skills”.

  • Codes McGodes

Thank god they’re [currently] not planning on making any sequels and milking the game for all its worth. Their sequels are always fucking terrible. Do you disagree?

  • Frederick Badguy

Thats the why I like this guy! For me, Tabata is the new Tetsuya Nomura!

  • stevenm281

I totally disagree, LR became my favorite title of the 13 trilogy and my favorite PS3 game.

Back in the early 2000’s, I had a lot more fun playing 10-2 than X.

  • Noctis

XIII was horrible, i was fine with all the other entries

  • Noctis

i know its only my opnion

  • stevenm281

I wasnt replying to you, but to Codes

  • grapes9h5

I think one of them is for your party abilities. The other is probably for “ring” magic once you unlock it.

  • You gotta point

  • I hope that he still put in CGI cutscene battles showing the characters. Fighting for themselves.. doing the fightings as the player is good but i still wanna see the characters. Fight their way too. Even Tales games and KH still mix those scenes in. Some were in 13 and the sequels. So if Tabata likes putting those in then good. Because Nomura never shyed from it.

  • That’d be good. Is there anyone doing a controller HUD breakdown of the new changes yet?

  • Rare monster items for synthesizing

  • What? I thought skills would have a button for themselves

  • So i guess its ch0 the snake attack, then what happened in platinum is Noct in a coma, then fastfoward to present with ch1 and the car breaking down.

  • All Seeing Eye

He said VII was the last to do it so all previous entries were not included.

  • If they do make a sequel it better not be slapped together like 13s. “0h we killed the bad guy, no wait no we didnt”.
16 hopefully with all they learned about ps4 and xb1 they can make it in 5 yrs.

  • Yuntu

The dream won`t be in the final game, that`s just something for the demo. But yeah that`s roughly how I imagine it to go down.

  • Vallen

    X (Cross) – Jump
    Square – Block/Take Cover
    Circle – Attack
    Triangle – Warp
    L1 – Lock on
    R1 – ?
    L2 – ?
    R2 – ?
    L3 – Run
    R3 – Reset camera
    Dpad – Chose weapons
Option/Touch Pad – Pause and Open Menu

Here is what they have yet to map on the controller:
    -Team Support Attacks
-Shortcuts to Skills (Tempest, Drain Blade etc..)
-Shooting mechanics when Noct has a gun, so aim and fire
    -Shortcuts to Magic

  • Vallen

I remember them saying that Duscae was a direct chunk from the game, and WILL happen in the full game. Perhaps they re-named the region to Leide and that’s the start of the game? (car break down, hunt behemoth, make cash and repair it)

Or maybe this time the car won’t break down in Duscae, but the area will remain the same if you’d like to explore.

  • Vallen

I think I heard everything I need to know. Other than the E3 trailer, I think I’ll soon go on a media blackout for this game.

  • Yuntu

Duscae is in the final game, but the whole “car breaks down” is something they stole from the first chapter simply to have something story related in that said demo.

  • noctcaelum

I was thinking that when you summon titan and you’re inside a cave .then titan tries to peek inside then think a little and scratches his head then go back confused.that would be hilarious.

  • Really? I thought he said that sequel(s) to FFXV were in the works. :/

  • 🙂

  • grapes9h5

Some increasingly random and optimistic post-read Predictions:

1.) The prologue/chapter 0 is probably Regis fighting in a battle, either solo or with his own original party (Cid, Gladio’s father, and Cor). Or maybe its where he saves young Noctis from the monster like in the opening of Brotherhood.

2.) Either Ardyn is the main villain (GI also revealed there is indeed one singular big bad), or he is an anti-villain who helps the party increasingly over the course of the game. Maybe he even becomes a Guest Party member.

3.) Glauca (who is also the one seen in the Kingsglaive trailer) will emerge as the main villain, and is actually one in the same with the mysterious white robed hooded Assassin’s Creed looking dude from the Versus XIII and E3 2013 trailers.

4.) There will be a chapter (or two) where Luna is independently playable from Noctis and the main party, and will be given her own party allies, likely Gentiana and possibly Cindy as well.

5.) Very late in the game, the opportunity will open up for you to slot all four AI party positions, choosing between Ignis, Prompto, Gladio, Cor, Luna, Gentiana, or Cindy.

6.) The number of nights that have passed for the player since the start of the game will be made significant in some way and will be tracked in the game. While I don’t think it will have an impact on the main story, I think it will be acknowledged in some way by the game world and characters and will not be arbitrary. The plot is about the days getting shorter after-all.

7.) Aranea will be fought a number of times. She will have a deep, possibly tragic, backstory that will be revealed over the course of the plot.

8.) Iedolas Aldercapt will be betrayed and taken out by the half-way point of the game.

9.) One of the main party allies dies before the game’s end. My bet is on Ignis. It will be the saddest death in FF history.

10.) Regis will survive the events of Kingsglaive but will die for real around the halfway point of the game, after doing something incredibly epic.

11.) Bahamut will have the most epic of all the summon’s set piece encounters. Ifrit’s and Shiva’s will also be pretty spectacular.

12.) Luna will have special magic and summons that may include “Holy” and Alexander, respectively.

  • Yuntu

I doubt Cidney will have any fighting ability.

  • Yuntu

Nope, no one ever said that. Tabata, I think, pointed even out multiple times that no sequels are planned.

  • Yuntu

We saw one in the “reclaim your throne” trailer that clearly wasn`t from the movie (simply going by how it looked).

  • Turns out I was both wrong and right:

Nomura had stated something similar –> //www.novacrystallis.com/2013/06/final-fantasy-xv-is-the-first-part-in-a-larger-epic/

But since he’s no longer director this is essentially moot now.

  • Yuntu

That was the whole reasone they rewrote the story, because Nomura had sequels in his head.

  • stevenm281

Yeah, I think Tabata already confirmed it last year, but all can change.

  • Well yes, I realize that now.

  • Kaspa12

All looks good to me… the one thing I did not like reading was this:

Magic spells are collected like a resource and can be recharged at various places on the map (think FFVIII‘s Draw system).

I was not a fan of the draw system in FF VIII…

  • stevenm281

Tabata confirmed on Uncovered day during an interview with GameSpot that
Luna is not playable and wont fight alongside Noctis and co. as
    initially intended.

  • grapes9h5

“Machines” were mentioned as a weapon type in the GI article. I hear that, I think of Cid and Cindy. Also, concept art showed what appeared to be a younger Cid fighting alongside Regis. Given the themes of legacy, I think that more than opens the door to Cindy being able to fight.

  • stevenm281

I think more of Noctis using magitek armor or those stationary big rifles (which I don’t remember how that is properly called) in base invasions.

But anything can happen and I’m stocked either way.

  • grapes9h5

I decided to take developer comments relating to story and character beyond the initial set-up, i.e. answers that could be spoilers potentially, and take them them with a big fat grain of salt.

If Tabata says you “only play as Noctis,” I take that to mean “but if there were exceptions, I certainly wouldn’t want to tell you, so I won’t.” Meanwhile other things said give hints that parts of the story are told from the POVs of Luna and Regis (and I mean beside Kingsglaive). Could be cut-scene only material, “but if there were exceptions, I certainly wouldn’t want to tell you, so I won’t.”

  • grapes9h5

Could be that to, the thought had crossed my mind. I’d love both of us to be right.

  • grapes9h5

I heard that he said that, but I’m not sure I can believe him on matters that would wisely be deemed “spoilers.” Call me delusional or in denial. I think they have been in a weird spot with this game, lots of things have been said over the years, much of which has changed in the final product, but with that its also that priorities as to what is important not to make public would have also changed.

    Maybe I’m just too optimistic.

  • D.3ND

In the trailer, they showed five status bars (Noct,Gladio,Ignis,Prompt and Cor). So No.5 is a pipe dream.

  • grapes9h5

I don’t really understand your point. There are bits in the trailer where you have your fab four fighting with Cor as the gust party member (in the fourth or fifth slot depending on whether you are counting Noctis or not). My #5 point in my OP is saying that near the end of the game, you may be able to freely hand select your party members from a larger pool that includes past guest members. You know, like MANY OTHER FINAL FANTASIES or RPGs. The max number in the party would still be five including Noctis.

I know there has been developer comments that contradict what I am saying. What I’m presupposing is maybe they are attempting to mislead us a bit in order to keep the surprise.

I find it too odd to think they’d keep to their word about Cor being a guest party member, and not open the door for Luna (who at one point they said would) or other characters we aren’t aware of yet. The difference may simply be that they decided that it was okay to show off Cor in that way in the trailers, but not others.

  • Dongmatteezzy

The others just doesn’t make sense even if it is just a prediction. I mean—Luna as a playable character? (well as much as we want to control her and use her in battle) that’s not gonna happen unfortunately. It was already confirmed that Noctis is the only playable character and that was it, that was the full statement about it. No more No less. (it means there is no “If you can switch characters in some point, I won’t tell you 😛 cause it’s spoiler” thingy about that.)
But I’m still hoping she will still be a quest party member (being optimistic here!)
POV – Kingsglaive: Regis and Luna
    POV – FFXV: Noctis only
And there is no FFX-2 Girl flower power group in the FFXV. (like the ones you said: Luna x Gentiana x Cindy….that’s ridiculous. sorry.)
for Aranea…….well they will not let her be an important character/enemy in the game if she doesn’t have any backstory. That’s a given.
I don’t know about your idea on what’s gonna happen with Regis and Iedolas………well…..let’s just wait and watch the Movie and another wait——and play the Game.
I’m to scared to see if someone important will die in the game (even if it is already obvious. I’m just too devastated about Aerith’s and Zack’s *beep* SPOILERS. so that’s why I’m scared to know—)
I would love to see Bahamut as a Summon(Archaean) in the game too 🙂
I doubt that Cindy will fight alongside the group.
Maybe in chapter 0 you will see the “Awaited Epic battle near the end of the game” because most games starts in that kind of scenario. (It’s just a guess)
    your #5……well—-maybe or maybe not.
and last, maybe the Main Villain isn’t Ardyn or maybe he is. We still don’t know yet about the hooded guy so maybe he is the Main Villain or maybe the Main Villain is another character that is not yet revealed. (ooooohhh)

  • Theroux721

Boohoo. Such an asinine comparison just reaching for straws.

Always a strawman on how the Draw system “wuz baddd” lol. Get over it.

  • Dongmatteezzy

If Nomura is still the Director and he’s planning to create sequels to FFXV…..then the game’s story is REALLY REALLY BIG. No wonder he decided to make the FFVIIR a multi-part series cause the story is MASSIVE too. Tabata said that they put the FFXV’s whole story into one installment. So they rewrote the MASSIVE story of the title to fit into one game. It’s way more better if they stick to the original plan of Nomura in the first place. Fitting the whole story into one game means cutting and changing something in the whole story to fit into one and that is BAD for the FFXV’s story…VERY BAD. Imagine FFVIIR WHOLE STORY in one game—that can only happen in our imagination because that is too impossible to happen. The WHOLE story of FFVII will not fit into one game cause if you tried, means that you will cut and change and rewrote the story just like how they did to FFXV and that will be the end of FFVIIR if they did that. Really happy that Nomura made FFVIIR to be a multi-part series so he can fully show the WHOLE story of the game—-the WHOLE. in FFXV—-well we can definitely see the Whole story of the game when it is released but we will not see the “whole” original story of Nomura for FFXV. 🙁

  • Xervath

And at the same time you’ll see her thinking: “Well if I throw that wrench hard enough…? Cid always said it could have somebody’s eye out…”

  • I dont like that either.

  • Yuntu

People give Nomura way too much credit. I mean look at KH, I really don`t want something like that for a mainline FF.

  • Codes McGodes

Personally I liked FFXIII-2, but it’s the only direct sequel I’ve enjoyed. LR was trash imo. And X-2 was extremely fun, but the story was terrible.

  • Codes McGodes

Personally I did enjoy FF13-2, but I hated LR, personally. And I’ll give that for X-2. X-2 has one of the best battle systems on the series, and it’s fun as hell to play, it’s the story that sucks so much though.

The thing about square enix sequels is that they always have such a huge disconnect from the previous titles. They’re usually pretty fun to play at least, but like FFX was a somber tragedy full of death and despair, and its sequel was kooky, quirky, and full of naked girls and pop concerts. FFXIII was about standing up against your oppressive demigods and taking control of your fate, then FFXIII-2 had you time travelling and LR turned you into a jehova’s witness for the end of the world. It just ends up feeling like it’s not even a sequel at that point because they’re so radically different, you know? It’s like the just ripped the cast out of one game and slapped them into a totally different one.

As stand alone games, they’re not necessarily bad, they just don’t fit within the worlds of the originals.

  • Jordan

    you can read my mind

  • plj

    im scared to read this…

  • Kris

Ignis can’t die. He’s my favorite of all of them :'(. I’ll be so fucking depressed if he does. Ignis and Zack are my favorites in terms of characters (Crisis Core really hurt, I don’t want to lose them both).

  • what are LBs?

  • Geraldo de Rívia

I have to agree with @grapes9h5:disqus . It’s just too weird. Sometime ago they confirmed Luna could fight and would also appear as a guest party member, and now they’re saying she won’t.

They’re definitely hiding something or maybe just throwing some information to get us confused, so that the game can be surprising.

I’d go even further and say that Stella is somehow in the final game. Ok, I’m gonna stop right here. lol

  • Duston D. Scott

I don’t think there are going to be any sequels. Tabata has already said that he plans on doing some story DLC, but they don’t have ideas for it yet. Who knows though?

  • Syafiq Dosuki

Hope its not exactly like FF VIII.

  • Limit breaks trances overdrives

  • You got a time slot of when it happened in the trailer? I just remember recent Noct deflect Ardyn.

  • It would be. Hope summons can talk.

  • R1 will likely be for team attacks since triangle is all warp now.

  • Yeah its not in the game but thats where it was chronologically

  • Yuntu

It`s when Regis says “My son, my heir.” in the trailer.

  • Erebos Tenebris

I’m guessing he is the one who cuts up the monsters into slabs of meat and identifies edible plants.

  • Erebos Tenebris

considering that summons in this one are supposed to be gods it wouldn’t make sense for them to be unable to talk, or to at least send texts like carbuncle does.

  • Thought summons were still just elemental spirits and the gods were the 3 giants in that trailer with Noctis’ pop crying as if he had to offer his son to the gods.

  • Ill rewatch it again.

  • As far as i can tell its all just regular in game battles other than the time he deflects Ardyn.

  • Yuntu

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C05PC_dGjsw

Start this at 35 seconds, the scene where Regis puts his hand on Nocts shoulder is CGI.

  • Dongmatteezzy

I hope the game will have a bunch of CGI scenes XD

  • Its really quick. Its when they flash a bunch of scenes in a row right?

  • Yuntu

Yup, it`s just a short glimpse of one CGi scene.

  • Lucas Nóbrega Maia

Actually not exactly , it’s like I said , it’s still FNC , just focus in another beings.
The best example is Noctis hmimself , as he had the Eyes of Etro , a goddess form FNC.

  • Lucas Nóbrega Maia

FNC is a lore that help set some world’s characteristics.
Type-0 is completely disconnect from XIII in all things , with only exceptions is the existense of special crystals , gods and theis messangers.
But a L’Cie is merely the messenger of Fal’Cie and their gods , while Etro and the God of Light had messengers with a different name.

  • Yuntu

No, it completly distanced itself from FNC. Tabata even said Etro isn`t in it anymore in a round-about way.

“The woman in the Final Fantasy XV logo–drawn by series artist Yoshitaka
Amano–isn’t necessarily Etro, the goddess of death mentioned in
earlier trailers for Final Fantasy Versus XIII. She is, however, the
most important goddess in XV’s world, and Amano’s original sketch of her
was the inspiration for her character.”

    http://www.gamespot.com/articles/16-more-things-we-learned-about-final-fantasy-15/1100-6430160/

  • Erebos Tenebris

While they haven’t given all the details yet, what I understood was that all of the summons are gods, its just those 3 are either the “head” gods or the spokespeople for the gods. Its like in Greek myth, Zeus, Poseidon and Hades are the most important but there are a lot of other gods as well.

  • Oh okay. Sweet. I’m always for the summons being more vocal and interactive in the FFs or Tales games. Too often they’re just silence bystanders. FFX, 9, and 14 seem to have them the most interactive.
Yeah I’ve seen the art. It’s done like an old brown-ish worn out painting. 3 gods, a bunch of summons, some of which seem like the knights of the Round.

  • SiliconNooB

Having to access the trunk in order to manage party items sounds like a bit of a pain…

  • SiliconNooB

What a stellar contribution to discussion!

  • SiliconNooB

It’s possible that they previously had her planned as a guest character and then changed their minds. Nothing is set in stone.

  • SiliconNooB

It could mean monster tracking skills? Or maybe he is able to identify plants in the environment that can be harvested for items and materials?

  • SiliconNooB

    Their sequels are always terrible.

  • SiliconNooB

People who are stuck making horrible sequels might have otherwise been working on potentially better games.

  • WaneMana

3.) is not possible due to Glauca and the Hooded Man both standing next to one another in the E3 trailer from 2013. If the Hooded Man is the main bad guy then we won’t see much of him until Noctis returns to Insomnia, the capital of Lucis.

  • WaneMana

6.) will be revealed to be the main quest in the game after enough progress has been made against the empire and I think the Hooded Man will have something to do with the “Plague of the Star”.

  • WaneMana

7.) I think you are right that we will fight her several times too and she made eventually abandon the empire for your party as a guest.

  • WaneMana

8.) A good guess but I think the Hooded Man will be loyal to him and not Ardyn.

  • WaneMana

9.) Cor will die for sure I believe. If one of them dies then I believe they will all die apart from Noctis.

  • WaneMana

10.) if Regis dies it will be after he reunites with Noctis in Insomnia.

  • WaneMana

12.) Only royal members of the Lucis family can summon them. Luna can only talk to them and she will on behalf of Noctis to strengthen their relationships.

  • WaneMana

2.) Ardyn will manipulate the party to advance his own agenda within the Empire. I am guessing he will not approve of the Hooded Man’s influence over Ledolas if the Hooded Man is still written in the game that is. If he is then I believe the Hooded Man will be the main villian.

  • Theroux721

I could say the exact same. 0/10

  • The Bandsaw Vigilante
