Amano's painting of Etro lives on in Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV

One of the biggest scoops out of Japanese magazines this week focuses on Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV – the CGI companion film set to launch ahead of Final Fantasy XV proper.

Both Dengeki PlayStation and Famitsu have major spreads focusing on the members of the elite Kingsglaive unit sworn to protect King Regis. We know Nyx Ulric from the initial trailer but joining him is the commander Drautos; Crowe, the female member of the guard; Luche, who considers himself the leader of the team; and Libertus, who is said the be cheerful one of the group.

Aside from the main cast, Lunafreya is shown throughout as one of the key characters in the movie. One particular scene of note places her along with Nyx and an illustration by Yoshitaka Amano thought to have been lost in the transition from Nomura’s Final Fantasy XV to the game we see today.

You can see in the image below, it appears Luna is meeting Nyx at the location of the peace signing celebrations as seen in several older trailers. The text asks why isn’t Lunafreya in Altissia (where she is supposed to be meeting Noctis) but now in Insomnia? What kind of meeting is she having with Nyx and the Kingsglaive?

From the bits and pieces of what we knew, Etro’s role in Versus XIII was tied to a certain legend. The legend said that when Etro opened the Unseen Gate, souls of the dead would appear as streams of light as they flew up through the heavens. Both Noctis and Stella were said to be able to see this light, having gone through traumatic experiences in their past. It’s unknown if those elements still remain in Final Fantasy XV today.

Both magazines also feature a small bit on Brotherhood: Final Fantasy XV – which sees its second episode due out in June. Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV arrives in Japanese theaters starting on July 9th.
