Motomu Toriyama hints at a possible Final Fantasy XIII-2 sequel By Erren Van Duine on June 21, 2012 at 1:18 AM

The Final Fantasy XIII-2 Ultimania Omega has made it out into the wild, and with that comes the usual bits of information contained within.

In addition to a collection of artworks from the game, including rough character sketches of Lightning, Hope, Serah and Caius by Tetsuya Nomura, the guide also features a brief interview with staff members Yoshinori Kitase and Motomu Toriyama.

The most interesting bits come from questions regarding the recent Lightning episode DLC, which includes perhaps a bit of insight into Toriyama’s next project. “Like Lightning advancing one step forward in the secret event, I think we want to take a step forward to advance our own project. From now on, I’d be happy if you could anticipate it.”

Does this mean Final Fantasy XIII-3 is truly in the works? Toriyama did recently mention he would be working on a new project soon after XIII-2′s completion… and with XIII-2 not exactly “concluded” I suppose we’ll find out in due time.

Another bit from the guide translated by Gematsu reads:

Kitase: (The last part about Lightning’s DLC Episode) Explaining “XXX Years Later” would be pointless. It might seem that the line “To Be Continued…” means that Lightning’s chapter will continue in more download content, but we are doing it in a different interpretation.

Toriyama: With Lightning remaining in the 〇〇〇〇ル (crystal?) but still keeping her heart, you could say that the world of Final Fantasy XIII will be permanently 〇〇ed. I’m praying for the day to come that Lightning will surely 〇〇めて (wake up?) and Serah will be rewarded.

I feel like whatever Toriyama is working on, it’s not XIII-3, more like a spin-off detailing Lightning’s adventure.

Keeping my fingers crossed that this ‘project’ will just be a novel iteration or something. If not, I think it will officially be safe to say that Square doesn’t give a flying f*ck what their fanbase wants anymore.

Um… praying for the day his awful FFXIII characters are “rewarded”? He cares that much about people that don’t even exist? This guy is a creep and a loser.

Toriyama is not a wise choice for developing a FF game when left to his own devices, that much is clear. It’s time for him to go, and it’s time for FFXIII to be put on the backburner indefinitely so the company can start hyping Versus, which is what most FF fans want anyway at this point (myself included).

I love XIII and especially XIII-2′s battle system, and have defended the games in the face of a lot of unfair criticism over the past couple years, but enough is enough. We don’t need another one. They’re acting like this is FFVII in terms of milking it and thinking enough people will care. It’s a dumb idea, and all this is doing is driving the series even further into the ground.

It’s kind of scary how S-E continues to have a near complete inability to communicate with their fans and understand what they really want. If dismal XIII-2 sales alone can’t make them realize what a waste of time and money it would be to keep investing in this project, nothing probably will.

At this rate, assuming they continue to make poor choices like this and completely ignore their fanbase, FF will be completely irrelevant by the end of the PS4/720/Wii U generation.

ok . This is a bad news ever

  • tjhaladff

Hell yea, hope this happens. suck it haters

  • Breeze

    Please no.

I hope they make XIII-3, fuck the haters and “what the fans want” not everyone wants the same thing so quit acting like they all want it to end. Hell just look at the poll results so far, 59% want XIII-3, so um yeah, good job on siding with what the fans want.

FFXIII is my favourite game ever, I’ve never been so attached to characters, story and world as much as I have with Lightning and co. and the world of XIII, they are amazing and I would love to see more of them. And there IS more to tell.

  • Laxtender1

And why would that not be XIII-3? It probably wouldn’t play like XIII/2 but it doesn’t mean it wouldn’t be titled XIII-3.

Considering the disparity between sales of XIII & XIII-2 (the latter selling merely 25% of what the first installment did), I’d say the general fanbase is tired of XIII, overall. I’m in no way bashing those who enjoyed it, however if this trend of sequels continue, I don’t see how we’ll ever get around to FFXV, OR VERSUS, for that matter. And in my opinion, it doesn’t sound like they’ll make another full game. Perhaps we’ll see something along the lines of a PSN or XBL downloadable game or maybe even a novel. Whatever the case, once they finish this ‘project’, I hope this story AND IT’S CHARACTERS will be put to bed.

    MOVE ON, SQUARE!

  • Crona

The majority of people like FFXIII. The haters seem to be more, but polls and whatnot show otherwise.

  • Crona

Dude…it’s a freaking game. Of course the characters don’t exist.

  • http://twitter.com/StarNox70 Nicole DeCambre

Polls don’t always draw from an unbiased pool of voters. Sale numbers don’t lie, my friend. ^_^

  • Crona

lol sale numbers? Give me a break. Call of Duty is one of the top-selling games of all time, and – in my opinion – it’s a piece of junk.

    Awesome!!!
I hope it has more content because XIII-2 was too short and I hope we get to play Lightning again, also if they want to do DLC make it only costumes and colosseum.

  • Aboy

I wish there will be a happy ending for lightning….
