Vanille will also have a role to play in Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII By Erren Van Duine on July 27, 2013 at 3:32 AM

Japanese fans got their first hands-on with Lightning Returns today – courtesy of a Sony sponsored Play Community event held in Tokyo – where they were able to preview the beginning of the game. While most of the details shared at the event encompass information we already know, a few new tidbits have leaked out from those who attended the viewing.

Earlier this month, we learned that Fang would be rejoining the cast and it looks like she won’t be alone. Vanille is also back in some form, although details on her reappearance are still largely unknown. It seems she’s being sheltered by the religious group called the Salvation Council, which keeps a tight grip on the city of Luxerion.

The reason for Hope’s appearance as his 14 year old self is also still a mystery – one that will likely be solved during the course of the game. Apparently he went missing 169 years ago from the start of the game’s story, and although he can’t remember how he reverted to his teenage form he still remembers events from the past – just not in an emotional sense. Both Lightning and Hope seem to have thinning emotions. The older version of Hope from XIII-2 will make at least one appearance via a cutscene, but it’s still unknown if he’ll return to his adult form in the end. Snow has changed somewhat as well – no longer referring to Lightning in a casual manner, but now simply as “Savior.”

The fourth and final area in the game – the Wildlands – was shown off to the audience. It’s an open forest sort of area in which Lightning can ride chocobos through. The other three previously detailed continents include: Luxerion – a city with a strong religious atmosphere where Lightning is tasked with investigating a murder. Two play styles are offered here, which the team labels “Detective” and “Tracking.” The Detective part offers a peaceful style of play, while the Tracking part offers a more stealth-based play style. The Dead Dunes is a large desert, and as one might expect, not an area with a lot of buildings or structures. But it’s not just a bunch of sand – the idea was to create a desert that felt realistic. Buried within the sand are ruins and relics along with terribly strong monsters. In the pleasure city of Yusnaan resides the Patron, Snow. There are various points of interest here, but you’ll need to make use of the time limit with great caution here.

As previously detailed, the collaborative costumes from Final Fantasy VII, X and XIV will feature unique sets of victory poses as well as their own victory themes. Color customization will be available on these outfits as well for those wanting to change the look of Cloud’s SOLDIER uniform, however weapons and shields will not have the ability to be pallet swapped. Lightning will also be able to obtain Yuna’s summoner garb – which was initially revealed at E3 and will likely be a part of Square Enix’s Go There campaign.

For those that still have save files from Final Fantasy XIII and XIII-2, you’ll unlock Lightning’s outfits from each respective game automatically.

Lightning’s other costumes will be available through quests or purchased at a shop, while some abilities can be gathered through enemy drops. Unlike the previous two games, many shops will appear. As time passes in the game, the product line-up available in these shops will change. There are over 100 types of shops. Lightning will only be able to hold six items at the start of the game, but this will increase as you progress.

Initially the range of items available will be limited but it’ll increase as the story progresses – the same can also be said for the number of inventory slots available to Lightning, with only six at the start. She’ll also be able to wear a variety of accessories including necklaces, earings, mascot items (such as XIII-2’s Mog) and glasses. Equipping the right setup is key – by using the right configuration of equipment, the game’s final boss can be felled in under 50 seconds. Players more interested in a less action-based approach need not worry – Lightning can be stacked more on the defensive side of things which will eliminate the need to reply on Guard and Evade tactics.

There are some enemies that even the most skilled test players have referred to as “impossible.” Up until now, Square Enix has talked about the possibilities of New Game Plus, but this is the first time they’ve discussed the optional areas to explore after you technically completed the game. The difficulty level of the enemies in these areas is still being adjusted.

Lastly, the staff took some Q&A time to answer fan questions – one in particular curious if Lightning’s bust size had really increased as indicated in a Japanese interview at E3. It’s true, according to Toriyama and her bust size will actually change depending on the type of Schema she is wearing. The rest of the Q&A is translated as follows:

Q1: I think that one of Lightning`s most attractive features is her armpit. Is there a costume that will show off this part of her when she does her victory pose?
A1: Something that shows off her armpit..? Well, there are some revealing sets of costumes. I’m sure you’ll enjoy those.

Q2: On the shop’s accessory screens, I didn’t see any earrings or other small items that looked like they could be equipped…
A2: We’re still at a point where there’s time to make adjustments. We’ll look into that.

Q3: Will there be an arena-like area like there was in Final Fantasy XIII-2?
A3: Yes. There will be an area where you can fight strong monsters.

Q4: I know you said there will be a time system in this game, but will there be an item like the Excalibur II from Final Fantasy IX that you can only obtain at one specific time in the game?
A4: There won’t be anything specifically like that, but you will be using the time system a lot over the course of the game. For example, there will be quests that you must clear within a time limit, items that you can only buy during the first half of the game, and some shop characters that you can only run into once in a while. The world you play within will be constantly changing.

Q5: Will you be able to customize the weapon and shield colors?
A5: This won’t be a feature, but there will be a large number of each to collect. There will be about 70 or 80 swords, and the number of shields is only a few less than this, so there will be lots of combinations to play with.

Q6: Will there be mini-games?
A6: There aren’t really going to be simple card-based mini-games, but there will be mini-game-like ways to clear certain stages of the continental quests.

Q7: Why is Hope a young boy?
A7: As of now, thanks to the power of the gods Hope has been returned to the form of a young boy.

Q8: Final Fantasy XIII-2 featured multiple endings – how about this game?
A8: This is the last installment in the Lightning Saga, so there is only one ending. Outside of this, if you fail to save the world, of course it’s game over, and the New Game Plus feature will allow you to explore new areas of the world after completing the game.

Q9: In Final Fantasy XIII there were small jokes, like when you shook the controller Lightning’s eyes would roll. Is there anything like that in this game?
A9: I don’t think so, unfortunately. But if you move Lightning toward walls and pull her back away from them at the last minute, she will launch herself away from them. Depending on the costume she’s wearing, her ‘launch pose’ will change, so we hope you’ll have fun with that.

Q10: Are there any plans to use DLC in combination with the costumes?
A10: This hasn’t been decided yet. However, I think that you’ll be able to enjoy the entire game from the disc you purchase at the store.

Q11: Will Hope be fighting alongside Lightning?
A11: We have only two weeks left for development, but we’re considering it (laughs). Hope is so supportive to Lightning…

Q12: I really like Moogles and Chocobos. How many kinds of each will there be?
A12: There will be some Chocobos you haven’t seen before! But we ask that you please wait for our follow-up report.

From that piece of info regarding the characters, it sounds like their memories have been messed up or something.

“It’s true, according to Toriyama and her bust size will actually change depending on the type of Schema she is wearing.”

    uhhhhhh.

  • Yuri Godoka

“according to Toriyama and her bust size will actually change depending on the type of Schema she is wearing.”

Final Fantasy XIII-3: Lightning is my Waifu Edition

Seriously? Shouldn’t there be a law requiring Toriyama not come within 500 yards of Final Fantasy?

  • miss chel

I’m bothered by that statement regarding her bust size. Was that really necessary, the constant change? What does that even mean? Her actual bust changes depending on the outfit or the bust size may look different depending on the outfit? I hope they mean the latter, because this is definitely crossing the line and it’s pissing me off greatly.

  • ultromega

It can’t be that bad. It’s not like changing outfits is going to give Lightning double D’s or anything. The answer was probably said jokingly, and it shouldn’t be taken seriously. :)

  • Erren Van Duine

From how I understood it, the actual size can change depending on the outfit…

  • Billy Jackson

From what I can see I concur. I hope it’s not that noticeable, as it would definitely take away from the experience if it is.

  • miss chel

I think the change will indeed be unnoticeable. I hope the reason is that they were doing it because of the differences the outfits have, they make adjustments to the bust to balance out her appearance (e.g. for the Miqo’te outfit her bust looks smaller).

Proper reasoning or not, this is still making me feel uncomfortable.

  • Yuri Godoka

This is the guy who gave us FF X-2 and 3rd Birthday… I wouldn’t put it past him.

  • Prima

“For those that still have save files from Final Fantasy XIII and XIII-2, you’ll unlock Lightning’s outfits from each respective game automatically.”

That right there put a smile on my face. Not that I’m not excited to dress her up in the new outfits but the fact you can play her in her previous 2 is really nice. Options in general are nice.

Edit: Also forgot to comment, I’m hoping the reason they haven’t thoroughly explained Hope’s reverted age is because its something you find out while playing the game and I’m also hoping with good reason because honestly I myself don’t get why they did it. Though I may be completely wrong, just throwing out a guess. (Still thinking maybe its an A.I. but IDK)

  • miss chel

The AI theory is pretty strong. I’m also worried about this whole “thinning emotions” thing for Lightning and Hope. It’s hinting to me that there is something fishy about Bhunivelze being involved in “saving the world”.

  • miss chel

You have a point. I guess we shouldn’t jump into conclusions yet and unless they do your example this shouldn’t be treated as a big deal for now. Still, jokingly said or not it’s still quite inappropriate for the topic to be brought up in the event at all.

  • Mihel

Might be that the Hope we encounter here is not the Hope from XIII-2? The fact that he remembers all the events, but not in an emotional sense makes me think about Yeul. Not all Yeuls personally knew Noel and so they weren’t emotionally attached to him, but they all knew who he was and what happened to him.
I guess he has found an artefact that has activated a Time Gate.

Also I wonder why Vanille isn’t with Fang. Seems strange that they aren’t together.

“according to Toriyama and her bust size will actually change depending on the type of Schema she is wearing”
Tifa and Lulu outfits + victory poses confirmed.

  • Mihel

Agreed. I don’t see why would Bhunivelze want to save the world and people’s soul.
After all, humans and their souls were a consequence of Etro killing herself and Lindzei using her blood.

  • Billy Jackson

Yes, a busty Miqo’te may have been a bit much for some people. Thankfully this is probably the most noticeable instance. So I guess, just seeing a screen size picture of her in this costume, on another site, for the past week could just been getting to me.

The fact that this is a form of physical censorship is still disheartening though. If they think people are going to be seeing a bit too much, redesign the costume, not the character.

  • Matthew Barnes

Tifa and Lulu, 3 syllables total, HALF LIFE 3 CONFIRMED!

  • Matthew Barnes

Actually, Etro is still alive just depowered.

  • Tom

Everyone is coming back from earlier games, you can have outfits and weapons from other Final Fantasy games. They really try hard with this game but I’m starting to feel it’s a bit too much… fan service.

  • miss chel

I agree to an extent, for the crossover campaign. I think that one is actually hurting the game’s image.

  • miss chel

From a Japanese report I found earlier, I read through Google translate that the Ark is actually controlling Hope. Of course since it’s translated by Google it should be taken with a grain of salt.

Also, Vanille seem to be involved with a cult in Luxerion.

“Tifa and Lulu outfits + victory poses confirmed.”

    :((((

  • miss chel

Well I can see why Bhunivelze would want to save the world. All of his actions came from the desire to save the world from what he believed Mwynn laid upon it, the curse of death. However, you’re right about the people’s souls. I don’t know if he cares about humans at all.

  • miss chel

    No… she’s dead.

  • Vincent Olivarez

And none other than japanese fans had to ask this question. It’s pretty obnoxious, even if they hadn’t revealed this, I probably wouldn’t have even noticed. These people must really love their boobs.

  • Vincent Olivarez

Maybe the cloth enhances the breast size…like on Soul Calibur V. When you would equip an outfit to your model the breasts would eventually get bigger. Well, only if it was a female.

  • LightningF

    YYYAAAAAY BITCHIIZZZ!!!

    Now I’m even more excited!

  • Panos Dek

The fact that they and we actually talk about Light’s bust is something I never imagined! Lightning actually rules, and most haven’t even noticed! xD

  • LightningF

    Lmfaoo xD

  • LightningF

No, in one of their interviews it says she lost her power, not that she’s dead.

  • LightningF

I noticed xD the only thing I looked at since they said it at e3.

In the 13 days trailer, the blue outfit at the end is almost flat chested compared to her Equilibrium garb.

  • Billy Jackson

She has to return in FFXV after all. :)

  • Panos Dek

That’s true! Well flat chest with specific outfits is not all bad! They can’t be feminine in any case! Besides Lightning is not feminine at all times! xD

  • Prima

I am worried about that too. ): Anything dealing with the gods besides Etro has me wary as well, I feel they aren’t to be trusted at all, their agenda seems to only benefit themselves. Lightning might end up being a puppet for some heavy shit in the end (again me just guessing).

  • artemisthemp

Good to hear Vanille is in Final Fantasy XIII-3 :)

  • Ksar
  • Wercal

Well, if you look at the mythos, Bhunivelze doesn’t really look like the nice guy. Still, Yeul says in one fragment that the purest light in the crystals is the heart of Bhunivelze. Now that I think about it though, Lightning does say that the brightest light casts the darkest shadow. Anyway, I would actaully like for the gods to actually be nice this time. When you look at the past FF, they always end up being purely evil… Maybe he’ll be a bad guy but revert at the last minute… or the opposite. Who knows?

  • http://flylikeabrian.tumblr.com/ Brian

Vanille and Fang not being together kind of worries me. I do worry about Bhunivelze’s agenda. His goal originally was to preserve the world. But now he wants to move on to a different one and bring the souls of the humans with him? And Hope…what happened to him? He could be just a conduit for some other force? idk. Im ecstatic but also a little nervous about this game.

  • Wercal

Does someone know if we’ll be able to see some footages? I reeeeaaaally want to see more of that game!!

  • Ksar
  • Wercal

OMG… Thanks a lot! I wish there’d be more, but then again I’m sure there will be tomorrow. People out there are still to busy enjoying themselves to post much, I guess.

  • John Sotomayor

The XIII games and XV have two completely separate continuities that are simply linked by a common mythology.

  • Erren Van Duine

    Nope.

  • ultromega

Aww. Mog looks adorable perched atop Light’s head. I hope that Mog is animated though. Otherwise he’d look like a strange headpiece. I wonder if Mog is returning in terms of the story or if he’s just an accessory in this game.

  • Ehren Rivers

I’m honestly not sure how to feel about this. The language seemed pretty ambiguous to me, but I immediately took it as her breasts actually changing sizes and I don’t like that idea one bit. I’m also not really sure how to feel about the fact that this question was asked at all. I know the Japanese are different, but…

Meh. Maybe I’m just being an overly sensitive, repressed American. All I know is that it makes me lose some of my smile.

  • Ehren Rivers

I’m pretty much with you here. I would never have realized if it weren’t that person asking the question, because it’s really unimportant to me as a gamer. Now that I know, though, I’ll probably spot it pretty quickly.

  • Ehren Rivers

The Goddess was confirmed previously to be dead. The interview in question is referring to the fact that when Etro’s power left the world (when the Heart of Chaos was destroyed), the Eidolons lost their power along with it.

  • Ehren Rivers

I could sort of agree about the crossover campaign, if it weren’t for the fact that the crossover campaign actually extends into other games too. Cross-promotion isn’t usually a bad idea, and it’s generally seen as “fun”.

As for people coming back from the other games, I’d have to disagree with you solidly there. This is the end of a trilogy, with a large number of prior characters whose stories aren’t yet really resolved. Whatever one might think of the writing of the Lightning Saga right now, not bringing back the previous characters is probably the worst decision that they could possibly make. It’s not so important perhaps for new players of the game, but it’s crucial for returning fans to see a proper resolution to all of the plot threads.

  • Ehren Rivers

Hmm, that’s certainly interesting. I’m honestly not really sure. I’m worried about this “thinning emotions” thing, and I have to wonder if perhaps Lightning is not now more fal’Cie/God than human. The way Hope is described as remembering events almost reminds me of how Etro is described to “feel” (but not really feel) emotions in the Fragments novels.

  • Ehren Rivers

Point of clarification please, in case someone managed to catch something I didn’t; Were they referring to ALL weapons, or just the DLC weapons? The way it’s written above it just sounds like DLC weapons, and I noticed in various shots and video that there were many weapons and shields which appeared to be recolored or had one thing changed out of their color scheme.

  • Sapientia

What’s funny is that if no one had asked, I don’t even think anyone would have noticed. Now everyone’s up in arms over something that I’m sure is just to make sure the outfits don’t look odd or whatever. Seriously, I’m not trying to attack you, but why get so pissed off by THIS of all things?

  • Ehren Rivers

Although I mentioned responded to the status of Etro in a previous comment, I need to respond to this too. Regardless of whether Etro was fully destroyed at the end of XIII-2 or not, the fact remains that according to the base mythology of the game Etro killed herself, tearing at parts of her body until she bled out, and (for this setting) Lindzei crafted human beings from her remains.

Her soul, her spirit, her consciousness, whatever you want to call it awoke in Valhalla, the land of the dead in the Unseen Realm. Her physical self in the Visible World died, and this is to what Mihel is referring.

  • CauseICan

It’s been too long, Vanille. I’ve missed you so much!

  • Erren Van Duine

All weapons cannot be color swapped.

  • Ehren Rivers

I see. I guess they just have tons of versions then.

  • NRool

I am ecstatic about the XIII and XIII-2 costumes <3 brilliant!
Also, I'm actually hoping for something kind of like Amano's old FF style armors for Lightning, like, Warrior of Light's armor in Dissida, as an example.

  • Sapientia

Jesus-freaking-Christ, I’m so jealous! You can clearly see what seems to be a CGI opening (or cutscene) I guess …in the third pic in the slideshow, in the bottom right corner…that MUST be Snow and Lightning…my question is…why the hell are their heads so close? I CAN’T CONTAIN IT!
Just kill me, just kill me! Surely God has this game on-demand!!

  • Alexis Crockett

(pees my pants because I love vanille)

  • Alexis Crockett

“her bust size will actually change depending on the type of Schema she is wearing”

    ????????!!!

  • miss chel

Exactly, so gods like Etro can still reappear in XV, just portrayed in a different way.

  • Sapientia

So some of the outfits look better, I guess. Don’t know why everyone’s freaking out. Did anyone notice before the person asked the question?

  • ultromega

I assume that the person who asked it wasn’t being serious. Does anyone have video? Or more importantly, what other questions were asked?

(Unrelated note: I love your Naoto icon) :)

  • LightningF

    Oh mah bad xD

  • LightningF

    my bad

  • John Sotomayor

Since Vanille was one of my favorite characters, I’m incredibly glad to hear this.

  • NikkiCola

Oh sweet baby back ribs, I get to see Vanille again! I’m so freaking happy. She was, and still is, one of my favorite FF characters. This made my day; so happy! Can it be February already? 😀

  • William Bartee

they need to makethe game more harder and longer they are losing focus and need to make boss battles challenging the game sounding to short and too easy not good on a lightning fan

  • Billy Jackson

Yes, that’s it. Gods are higher being after all so they are allowed to exist in different world and forms. If she’s completely dead though that either implies that there are two separate gods called Etro or that XV comes before XIII in the cosmic timeline. Which I guess could be possible… But I don’t like it. ^_^

  • SazhKatzroy

It’s really good to see her back, plus the others. Hoping for a Sazh reveal soon. We have seen everyone else, so I guess they are saving the best for last 😛

  • SazhKatzroy

It would have been great if they worked in more party members. I could totally see everyone getting recruited again, and then coming together for the last battle that must be fought in the 13th Ark

  • Billy Jackson

I love the guy that asked that first question! We all wanted to know!! 😀

As for question 9… I can already see her doing a cat like pounce for her Miqo’te costume. :)

It’s amazing to think that they’re still considering so many things with only two weeks of development left. They must have a pretty awesome team working on this.

  • Ehren Rivers

They are two separate gods. The Fabula Nova Crystallis mythology is simply a BASE for the creation of worlds in the FNC collection. The Lightning Saga games are connected by canon, but XV and Type-0 have their own exclusive, 100% separate canon. They don’t even all use the terms in the same way, and Nomura’s interpretation of Etro isn’t going to be the same as Toriyama’s (even if they end up being similar in some aspects).

Square Enix have already confirmed that the three games take place in their own universes, and there is no connection beyond shared names and terms from the base mythology.

  • Sapientia

Why the hell are some of these questions even being asked at an event like this? xD And what’s this about Lightning launching herself off of a wall?!
“Oh, shit, shit, shit, IT’S A WALL! BACK THE HELL UP!”
    *backflips like ten miles*

  • Ehren Rivers

Well, that actually sounds like it could be very cool! I’m curious about the types of Chocobos, too. Glad the New Game Plus feature has been reconfirmed.

  • Sapientia

Oh, I think so, too, I’m just wondering why Lightning has such a strong aversion to walls. 8D
I just want a crazy-ass, red chocobo to come boppin’ along. xD Etro knows how long I spent chasing after a few in the Dying World (I’m pretty sure that’s what it’s called anyway).

  • Billy Jackson

Well they don’t have the be same character per se. But I still like to imagine there’s that connection, even if Etro acts and is involved in a completely different way. It probably makes no difference either way though, so each to their own. :)

  • Prima

Exactly. I like the idea of fighting Bhunivelze as an end boss, seeing as that would be a pretty epic finish in my eyes.

  • ultromega

The armpit question. Really. What the hell? Between that and the bust question… were there trolls in attendance?

  • M. Ziab

I can’t believe people would actually ask that face to face. I’d be so embarrassed. Seems like somebody has an armpit fetish.

It doesn’t really matter to me anyways. I just wished that they would have made better use of their chance. I mean, this is YOUR CHANCE to ask that question you’ve always wanted to, and you ask about her armpit? Really? There’s tons of costumes.. of course you’ll see her armpit in one of them.

  • M. Ziab

There will be a bright yellow chocobo in the Wildlands: you can use it to fly your way through the lands. It constantly consumes greens though when you’re in fly-mode.

There will also be a blue chocobo! It will compensate for the lack of walking path to Yunsaan.

The crazy red chocobo is no longer crazy and will thus not constantly consume greens as it did in FFXIII-2. You can, however, feed it greens to dig up hidden treasure now!

.. I just made all of that up.

  • miss chel

I don’t think I have the enough will to answer to someone who isn’t capable of understanding why such a topic could piss a number of people.

  • Sapientia

Hey now, what’s with the hostility? I don’t even feel like responding further if that’s what I get for asking a question, damn. :/

  • Panos Dek

So we await now to see if Serah, Sazh and Mog will actually be back! I know Mog is just an accessory in this photo. And, we know he died in XIII-2…
What’s the meaning of some of these questions anyways? I mean they had the possibility to ask some questions and they asked about Light’s bust and armpits? Oh come on!!! You can’t be serious! xD

  • Storm

new areas to explore in New game +, and some impossible boss fights = a game I will play for a long time.

  • Mihel

I’m sorry Ehren, no pink buster sword for you.

  • Ksar

Is there any feedback from those people invited to the event ?

  • Ehren Rivers

    Noooooooooooooo.

That was clearly my only reason for living. Welp, guess I have to become a super villain now.

  • Ehren Rivers

The problem is when people think of changing breast sizes, they automatically think that the breast sizes will get bigger when there is less clothing to hide the flesh. This is incredibly objectifying, and makes many (most, in my experience) women feeling uncomfortable that their bodies are being used as a gimmick point.

However, after studying the outfits already revealed to us I have found that Lightning’s cup size actually appears to be its smallest when most exposed; The Miqo’te Garb, the Sorceress, l’Ange Noir, even Dark Muse. I can’t pretend to know what they’re thinking, but it does look like she’s being given her regular, modest size for revealing clothes and given a bigger size for bulkier, concealing clothes.

  • Ehren Rivers

In the future, please either explain your position or don’t respond at all. If someone is bothering you that much, I’d really prefer you just walk away.

  • Faith

I don’t get, Vanille asked why did Serah turn crystal, she was a l’cie too, she turned into a crystal too, why did she asked it

  • John Sotomayor

I’m sure we’ll be seeing him, too. =)

  • Wercal

Was it confirmed that the Eidolons would be coming back? Even if they lost their power, perhaps they might still be of some use to Lightning. After all, summons are an extremely recuring feature in the Final Fantasy serie. Also, Odin has become some kind of partner to Lightning. Maybe they just ended up becoming some kind of mortal versions of themselves. (Besides, Bahamut would probably come back along with Caius)

  • Ehren Rivers

The Eidolons no longer exist the way they did before, but it wasn’t specified if they had become human or something like that. They completely dodged the question of whether there would be the ability to summon, but it sounds like there might not be. Also, Bahamut wouldn’t have any power anymore, just like the rest of the Eidolons, and with the Heart of Chaos dead Caius would no longer be able to perform the Incarnate Summoning.

  • miss chel

Sorry, I’ll admit that was quite rude of me.

  • Anime10121

Man, I need a time machine that pushes me forward until February!

Edit: Didnt see the slideshow at the bottom.

DAMN I WANT ALL DAT CHARACTER ART!!!

  • Anime10121

Lol, damn you! That all so sounded so awesome 😛

  • Ehren Rivers

If anyone would be willing to translate the first image that details the controller scheme, I would be very grateful.

    She be flyin like batman

  • LightningF

    Mine too ehren… mine too…

    *sobs*

  • Sapientia

But with considerably more style. 8)

  • M. Ziab

Just a bunch of references to FFIX.. the ‘pyntie hets’ on the “Black Mage” article was also a reference to the dwarves from Conde Petit, FFIX.. Not sure if anyone noticed it (Or remembered).

  • LightningF

    Of course ;D

what outfits do you like most btw? ^_^

  • Sapientia

Herp a derp, Equilibrium is my favorite (not including her XIII uniform), followed by Dark Muse, L’Ange Noir, and Strider, which hasn’t been shown yet outside of the E3 presentation.

  • Pekola

    What do you mean?

I honestly don’t remember Vanille asking that. But if she did, it might be because they never outright state in the game why Serah crystallized.

They might have a differing focus.

  • Sapientia

Works for me, but they’re in Japanese. Chrome isn’t asking to translate, either… :(

  • http://kizi-yepi.kizi2.com/ kiziyepi

ohh, that ‘s great when reading this information about Final Fantasy XIII. I really hope to watch it!

  • Matthew Barnes

No, Etro got a disney death. Serah and Yeul? They got real deaths.

  • Ehren Rivers

Incorrect. Etro’s death, while not present in the game due to it being part of the base mythology, was no different than that of Yeuls. Yeul also woke up in the Unseen Realm, where Etro sent her back (repeatedly) because her soul could not move on.

Furthermore, it is outright stated within XIII-2 that the Goddess is dead, absolutely, and no power (god or man) can resurrect her.

  • Faith

Chapter 2, when the group find Serah, and while she is turning into crystal, Vanille asks for it and Hope answer.

  • Ehren Rivers

There’s a bit of a language barrier here, I think. Faith is confused because he/she thinks Vanille asked why Serah turned into crystal at all, and Vanille should know that all l’Cie turn to crystal when they complete their Focus. Vanille is, however, asking why Serah turned to crystal at that precise moment, since she assumed that Serah’s Focus was the same as her own and Fang’s.

As an aside, they actually do state why Serah crystallized. During one of Vanille’s narration parts, she says to Serah (not directly to her, but in an ‘out in the universe’ kind of way) “You were the first miracle”, and “turned to crystal of your own will”. The line is strengthened by the actions of Cid Raines, who turns to crystal after defying his Focus and choosing to save Cocoon in his own way.

  • Ehren Rivers

Just in case you don’t see the answer to Pekola, here’s one for you. You’ve misunderstood the language of the line a little bit, here. Vanille isn’t asking why Serah’s turning to crystal at all, she’s asking why Serah turned to crystal right then. As far as Vanille knew, she and Fang had the same Focus Serah did so Serah shouldn’t have turned to crystal. Hope mistakes this question of “Why now?” to be “Why at all?”, and explains the nature of l’Cie because at this point none of them realize Vanille is already a l’Cie and has already woken up from crystal sleep once.

  • Ehren Rivers

That would be quite amusing. 😛 I’m more curious about the types it mentioned that we apparently haven’t seen before, though!

I half-expect the treasure hunting from the first XIII to return, too.

  • Ehren Rivers

Because of reasons. You should never underestimate reasons.

Yeah, ‘A Dying Worldz; 700 AF’ is what it’s called. I prefer the Pulse de Chocobo track myself, but Crazy Chocobo does grown on you after a while.

  • Ehren Rivers

I’m excited for Equilibrium, but I’m interested in some of the altered-forms of it we’ve seen. Most especially, I am interested in the purple Dragoon-like armor in one of the screenshot sets from the recent articles.

I am also quite looking forward to editing the colors on Yuna’s outfit.

  • Ehren Rivers

I feel like the Japanese are batshit insane sometimes. [/Sigh] I don’t understand their way of thinking at all, it seems.

  • Faith

Now I get it, thanks :)

Normal mode : Normal combat, no regen, penalities if you die.
    Hard Mode : Unknown

I wonder if Hard Mode will have to be unlocked after a playthrough on Normal, or if Hard Mode was just locked at that event.

  • William Bartee

how were ppl able to ask them theses questions why dont square have like a box where they ask fans topost what they want

  • Anime10121

Ksar changed them, they work now :)

  • Anime10121

I did! FFIX is my favorite FF! Love me some ZiDagger 😛

  • M. Ziab

Same here. FFIX had allusions to future titles: It had allusions to FFXIII-2. Well not really. But when fighting the white dragons that come out of the memorial gate, Beatrix says something like, “We’re heading into Valhalla”.. Which literally is the world of the dead.

… OR. The unseen realm from FFXIII-2.

I personally liked Vivi and Beatrix best. The Dagger backstory was amusing too!

  • Ehren Rivers

It was an event, and people attending were given a opportunity to ask questions. This is a common practice in nearly all forms of social entertainment; Video games, books, card games, tabletop RPGs, comics, tv series, you name it. It’s really just a special treat for attendees.

  • Anime10121

IX just had an awesome cast all the way around :)

    Awesome cast
    Touching story
    Beautiful Music

    IX had it all 😀

  • Ehren Rivers

XIII-2 contains many elements from the classic Final Fantasy games, it’s just very different in terms of mechanics and playable characters. Its story is probably the most in line with the original five games, and has a dash of references to the sixth.

Siiigh, I DO miss Vivi quite a lot. Sometimes I wish they’d remake VIII and IX in HD.

  • Anime10121

MY SISTA 😀 Thems two remakes I can agree with! I ALWAYS wish they’d remake VIII and IX! You know how people went apesh** for the FFVII Tech Demo on PS3? I was that guy with the VIII tech demo for PS2! Back when they had rumors that all three would be remade on PS2! VIII was great and IX was damn fine!

Though I honestly thought XIII-2 had more in common with the PSX FFs more than the NES/SNES ones.

  • Pekola

Well, I meant. They don’t -actually- confirm why she turned to crystal. I honestly take the character’s own conclusions with a grain of salt.

For reasons I hope are obvious. Lol. (“we can change teh timeline yay” *chaos consumes the world*)

  • Pekola

So many good questions to ask and we get armpit and boob questions.

    >:L

I’d love to ask some questions of my own. But noooo, armpits are more important.

  • Ehren Rivers

The idea is considered confirmed at the end of the story, when the party changes their Focus and turns to crystal sleep upon completing their new mission of saving Cocoon from Orphan’s plot. Beyond this, there isn’t a way to confirm the reason she turned to crystal regardless. Barthandelus is clearly okay with lying and manipulating people to try and get them to do what he needs, and the only fal’Cie that could actually confirm what Serah’s initial Focus was is dead.

For that matter, though, XIII is a story about defying fate and the things that happen in it are in line with this ideal. XIII-2, on the other hand, is a story about how sometimes trying to do the right thing gets people hurt and the game reflects that quite well. They are separate instances, and should really be treated as such.

  • vagrant_soul

You left out the flying chocobo!!! I loved how if you call the mog many times without saving he gets pissed. ” I’m sharpening my knife..Kupo”, always gets me :)

  • Ehren Rivers

In all honesty, VII is the one I don’t much care about. I don’t hate it or anything like that, or even dislike it. It’s just not on my list of things that I’d like to see get remade, and soon.

The plot elements of XIII-2 are all elements from the original five, and elements that are consistently present among them. The merging of worlds (IX has dual worlds, but the older games have them moreso), a Void that threatens to swallow up the world and everything in it, time shenanigans of various kinds (although VIII hits this requirement quite well), and for bonus points in Final Fantasy III there is a villain who literally wanted to halt time forever (which would throw off the balance between the World of Light and World of Darkness). There are some commonalities with the PSX games in terms of system information and some plot devices, but all in all XIII-2 remains very much in line with the kinds of stories seen in the First Five.

  • Ehren Rivers

I actually sent them a buuuunch of questions forever ago. Two months now almost, I think, and no response. I’m not really sure why they haven’t answered them, but oh well I guess. A large number of my questions have been at least partially answered in the last week or two, so I can live with the silence.

  • Stealth

    I hated her character

  • ultromega

I’m personally looking forward to whichever outfit gives Light the most pit action.

    (Of course, I’m kidding)

Dark Muse is at the top of my list, with Equilibrium not far behind.

  • M. Ziab

“Though I honestly thought XIII-2 had more in common with the PSX FFs more than the NES/SNES ones.”

“There are some commonalities with the PSX games in terms of system information and some plot devices, but all in all XIII-2 remains very much in line with the kinds of stories seen in the First Five.”

It DID have a lot of common elements with the SNES ones, alright. And the first five, sure. But to the extent that it had more references to them? I don’t quite agree on that bit. I’m pretty sure you don’t even have to approach NPC’s, read different signs in the game, or even do the sidequests to notice the references. FFIX is built around allusions to the previous titles. If I had to, I’d bet on FFIX having the greatest amount of direct references. All respect to your opinions though!

“In all honesty, VII is the one I don’t much care about. I don’t hate it or anything like that, or even dislike it. It’s just not on my list of things that I’d like to see get remade, and soon.”

I don’t mind FFVII. My only problem with it did not have a medieval setting. FF’s originally had a lot of medieval elements to them.. FFVII was the beginning of the ‘modern age’ of FF’s.. It was the first FF game to be in a modern setting. Which I’m not really a fan of. One thing I liked about it is that summons retained their ‘Organic Nature’ which I really wished that would happen for the FFXIII series as well. (They grew on me anyways)

I always wished that square enix would release FFVIII as an HD movie.. In 4 parts.. And if they wanted to do something with FFIX, just remake the whole game, and not change a single thing about it.

  • Guest

I don’t honestly like the new outfit.. I liked Etro’s fashion better.

I will be using the Etro Champion schema. It’s my favorite, along with other outfits from earlier FF characters. Sorry Equilibrium. I do hope they force it on the final boss fight. I don’t want lightning to have one outfit in the cutscene and then another in CGI cutscene (I mean after you defeat the final boss).

  • Ehren Rivers

“I’m pretty sure you don’t even have to approach NPC’s, read different
signs in the game, or even do the sidequests to notice the references.”

I believe you should go back and read my original statement again, where I said that it was similar in terms of story, whereas in terms of mechanics it was quite different. I’m not talking “Snicker snicker, that was a reference to FF ___” either, I’m talking about actual plot relation.

“If I had to, I’d bet on FFIX having the greatest amount of direct references.”

In terms of making actual references to previous games (things NPCs say, etc.), according to the most updated list I’ve got the winner for that is Final Fantasy VII with 8 or 9 references. VI and X come in second place with 6 references, followed by VIII and IX with 5. If you mean by game mechanics, the closest game to XIII-2 is X-2.

“FFVII was the beginning of the ‘modern age’ of FF’s.”

That’s actually not true. Final Fantasy VI takes place in a sort of ‘Steampunk Era’ setting, and was far more advanced than any Final Fantasy prior to it. It is definitely what set Square Enix on the track for the more modern and futuristic fantasies, because they got a pretty positive reaction about this new kind of setting. For that matter, IX was a medieval fantasy while X and XII sit at various points along the High Fantasy – Sci Fantasy divide. It sounds like Square Enix intends for there to be a future for all kinds of fantasy, rather than sticking with just one type, so there may be more games in the future you have issues with.

“I always wished that square enix would release FFVIII as an HD movie”

I would never want them to release VIII as a movie. Being my second-favorite Final Fantasy, I want to be able to actually play it. As for IX (and VIII too) it’s not really a complete remake if they don’t change anything. What you’re talking about is a full graphics update, not actually remaking the game. It’s a possibility given the X|X-2 HD Remaster set, but I wouldn’t hold my breath. Square Enix seems to feel there’s a lot they could tweak or fix if they remade the PS1-era games, and I think that’ll always be in their minds.

  • ultromega

I’m looking forward to using the Etro’s Champion outfit as well (is that what it’s called?). I wonder if we’ll be able to change the colors of different segments of Light’s armor. I’d like to play around with that.

  • M. Ziab

Not really. I just called it that because I didn’t know what it’s called.

  • M. Ziab

I didn’t! The flying chocobo is the bright yellow one, isn’t it? It was actually capable of doing all of what the other chocobos did.

  • Ehren Rivers

Ahhhh, I think I understand now. It appears we’re both talking about different things!

I’m not saying that XIII-2 made more references to the NES-era games than the PS1-era games like IX did. I’m saying that XIII-2’s general story and plot structure are more like I-V than they are like VII-IX. To put it another way (just for the sake of absolute clarity) I’m saying XIII-2’s story has more in common with the first five Final Fantasies than it does with the three released for the PS1.

  • Ehren Rivers

If you go to the second-to-last image above, you can see both her Guardian Corps uniform and her Etro’s Champion armor being color changed. You can see that all sections on the Etro outfit have been set to “red”, and her armor is pretty much all red. Looks like the only thing you can’t change is the gold trim and her angelic half-fauld. I find that to be pretty exciting, and I wonder which sections are where!

  • John Sotomayor

Why did you hate her character? =)

  • M. Ziab

Okay, uhmmm.. where to start…! First of all, my deepest apologies for not properly reading your post. I had a 20 minute break and I had to quickly read things and then reply.. I’m honestly confused about some things right now but I just wanted to note a couple of things:

    1. On the matter on FFVI.. I considered it as medieval because I couldn’t recall any cars being present in the game.. I know there’s a train (I forgot it’s name) but I personally never thought they were that advanced anyways..

    2. As for the FFVIII.. It’s probably in my top 4~10 Final Fantasy games, so I just personally. The game’s good, I love the mini games and side quests, but it didn’t really /move/ me like other titles did. Again, this is only my personal opinion and I know it’s probably never going to happen.. But if SE were to somehow make two of my wishes come true, one a game a remake and the other a movie release.. I’d ask for FFIX and FFVIII. Of course, a chance to replay FFVIII in such advanced graphics wouldn’t be bad: I’d like that better than the movie myself, but I think that’s just too much to ask for (lmao).

    3. Now, for FFIX. I wasn’t sure what the literal difference between ‘Remake’ and ‘Remaster’ was in terms of making new files from scratch or just updating them for the game.. but if a remaster would result in it’s graphics being as good as FFXIII, I would love that! It’s just that I was not sure if a remaster is enough for FFIX.. I thought they had to do everything from scratch for it.

As for the whole allusion/reference discussion (FFXIII-2 and FFIX).. I got really confused so I give up on it. xD Sorry again.

  • Ehren Rivers

Oh no, it’s fine! Hahaha, I realized we were both talking about different stuff. Just a case of all-around-confusion. 😛

  • LightningF

Ikr equilibrium is going it for the gods!

I must say I love her Mioq’te outfit (COME AT ME BROS) and especially love Dark Muse!

  • LightningF

It’s actually called Etro’s Champion lol, you were right.

Also, I read in an article the shield to her XIII outfit is one which GC troops on cocoon used.

  • Stealth

That was the wrong thing to say, I hated her US voice actor, the character while a tad 1 dimensional, I actually cared what happened to her at the end

  • Alexis Crockett

I understand why people dislike her, her constant bubbly sunshine attitude in the beginning makes her seem flat to some. But if you get into the story more it makes more sense why she’s like that. I really liked her though, from the beginning.

Also, it probably isn’t best to leave a comment that just says ‘I hate —’.

  • Sapientia

Miq’ote is pretty cute, even with Lightning’s creep face. xD

  • Sapientia

I’m looking forward to changing the colors on Lightning’s XIII uniform to match Amano’s original design where her outfit is more of a black/white palette.
    So many choices~!

  • Sapientia

Also looks somewhat similar to what the AKB48 member designed for Serah’s Style & Steel (that IS what it’s called, right?) outfit, the shield.

  • Sapientia

    Yeah, but, but…!
    Lightning Returns has SUGOI ATB!
I don’t even remember if that’s what it was called. xD

  • Ehren Rivers

Something like that, yeah. In English it would be “Amazing ATB”, or “Double ATB” (AATB).

  • Ehren Rivers

It does a little, yeah. Not similar enough to be mistaken in-game from what I can see, but certainly close.

  • Ehren Rivers

Black and white will certainly fit with the aesthetics of Luxerion. Personally, most of my outfits for her will be all dark purples and greens and golds.

  • Alexis Crockett

If Square left an open box for people to comment in, the majority of questions would be ‘Why do your iOS games cost so much’, ‘When is Final Fantasy [insert number here] coming out’, ‘pls send me vidya gaem’ etc..

It’s better to do it in person because there’s crowd control and you can see everyone, so the confidence and recklessness found in anonymity is lost.

  • Sapientia

    So…you don’t hate her character?

  • Sapientia

Is someone planning on importing…? 😛

  • Sapientia

I know, right?! I don’t even think some of that has ever even been shown…I want all of those character art panels…UGH, I WANT TO WORK AT SE.

  • Ehren Rivers

Sadly no, I don’t have the cash for that. However, I’m curious to see if there’s something new we could learn about the controls from that little guide. :)

  • Sapientia

By the time February 11th comes around, I’ll have spent about $200 on the JP version and the English (I’ve been saving since the announcement last year lol)…holy crap, I can’t wait until the day when an FF releases simultaneously internationally.

  • Erren Van Duine

    Final Fantasy XIV.

  • Sapientia

Sorry, should’ve said “that I plan on buying.” I probably won’t pick up XIV for awhile, but I didn’t know it was releasing simultaneously. Ya learn something every day.

  • Stealth

Its how I felt but your right lol

  • Stealth

    not 100%

  • M. Ziab

Yeah, if you actually said why you disliked her and elaborated a little more, perhaps people might understand your opinion and accept it. They may not agree, but if you didn’t just ‘hate’ on her, and gave an honest opinion, people might listen. Seems like you didn’t like the voice actor in the English version?

  • Anime10121

I think it is still the Amazing Time Battle system 😛

and I’m definitely looking forward to it, but I still dont see anything topping IX as my all around fave 😛

  • Anime10121

Well said, alot of the connections you mentioned I didnt even think about, mainly because of the (barring II and IV) lack of focus on story/plot in the first five. Also, I’m not one to ride the hype chain of VII either, I like it, but its definitely the worst of the PSX games to me, to much Shounen Jump in my Final Fantasy for me. Dont get me wrong, I love a lot of Jump, but in my FF, I want something a little different.

  • Anime10121

IX had so many fine touches that it’s just uncanny, tis why it will take something amazing to dethrone it from my top FF.

  • Sapientia

Kind of random, but do you guys send questions as part of NovaCrystallis, or is Erren uber-special and has these interviews? I’ve always been curious.

  • Sapientia

    I’ve never played IX. *shame*
Eventually, though, eventually. Something particularly special about it, though (not that every FF ISN’T special)? I hear nothing but goods things. :)

  • Sapientia

Speaking of chocobo adventures, I’d like a fun easter egg where if you press a number of button combinations, Lightning can do various moves on the chocobo, like stand up with her sword, or hang off the side, kickstart it and go zooming like hell…if anyone didn’t notice, I have a fetish for SotC. 😛
One question for Ehren though…is the chocobo thing going to be like XIII, where the chocobo has a morale type of mechanic and will buck you off, or in XIII-2 where enemies simply don’t appear on the field? Either way, I’d like for enemies to appear even on a chocobo…I’m just imagining a scenario where in an epic chase scene, Lightning is running away from something on a chocobo and is forced to the edge of a cliff in the Wildlands, jumps like a badass, and then immediately starts into another battle! 8D
    Sorry for my antics~~

  • Ehren Rivers

To my knowledge it’s part of Nova Crystallis? 😛

  • Ehren Rivers

Oh, Shadow of the Colossus. My life would be fantastic if there was more of that.

Noooo idea. We actually haven’t gotten any information about the Chocobo mechanics to my knowledge.

  • Sapientia

Darn. Fingers crossed, but maybe it’s better they put others things ahead of a chocobo circus, priority-wise. A girl can dream, anyway.
And I take it you enjoyed SotC? I hope this isn’t too off-topic from the page, but there’s no forum to simply chat. 😉

  • Ehren Rivers

Hahaha, well we’ll put articles up pretty much as soon as we get the info.

And it’s a little off-topic so we should prooobably stop, but. Well, I suppose we’ll see what the future holds.

  • Anime10121

The whole game’s special, it oozes a mix of charm, cuteness, fantasy, and nostalgia all mixed in one. It has imo one of the best OST’s ever created by Uematsu, as evident here Here and This one (which in its placement in the game is REALLY awesome) and and finally this, one of my favorite FF tracks !

The Chocobo game is the best yet imo, and its extremely useful in obtaining weapons, accessories, items and more. The moogles have a quirky little minigame that’s actually quite broad. It houses one of the strongest (physically and character-wise) female characters in the series in Beatrix. It has Black Mages 😀 The design of the world itself is beautiful and colorful. Its steampunk and a departure from all the Sci Fi SE has been into since VII.

Its just a fantastic FF and I really thoroughly enjoyed it (its the one FF I try to play EVERY year)! Hopefully when you play it, you’ll feel the same :)

  • Storm
  • Ksar
  • M. Ziab

I agree with Anime. You should play the game!

FFIX is special to me. It feels like a ‘Final Fantasy’ to me. The game offers an incredible degree of biodiversity, enchanting areas (I can’t think of ANY single place I don’t like), and encaptivating music! I’m not kidding; every single place feels like a world of it’s own. It’s also hilarious! I love the character development.

In my opinion, the best thing about the game is the amount and type of side quests.. It’s just full of them (A LOT are missables). It shares this with other FF’s such as VII, X, and VIII.

  • Matthew Barnes

So then why is she still alive? -_-….

  • Ehren Rivers

She’s not. People still worship Etro, but she’s not around anymore.

The only mention of Etro’s fate that could be construed as her surviving came with a question regarding the Eidolons and the possibility of summons. The translator said “When Etro lost her power” the Eidolons also did and that they don’t exist the way they did before. The line would have been more accurately translated as “When Etro’s power faded”, which is a world of difference. Etro died, her power (and that of the Heart of Chaos) faded away from the world, and the Eidolons lost their powers. It’s not even confirmed that they’re still alive, just that they “no longer exist in the form they did”. They could easily be weapons, shields, accessories, or Schema/Garb for Lightning to collect now.

  • Sapientia

I hope so. I finished Final Fantasy I a few weeks ago (Android remake) and just started XII over summer, but I’ll get around to it. I’m a noob to the series. xD

  • Sapientia

I’m kind of expecting some sort of sacrifice on Lumina’s part to bring back Serah (far-fetched, but it could happen) and she and Lightning fight the final boss together, alone. Now THAT would be, just…badass.

  • Anime10121

Oh, well boy are you in for a treat! I wholeheartedly recommend these entries in no particular order after your run in with XII!

    IX
    VIII
    IV
    VI
    X
    X-2
    Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII

    Cheers and have fun :)

  • Sapientia

Well, I shouldn’t say “noob” exactly. My first FF was XIII, but I’d been following the series since at least 2006 but never played one. I know a good amount about the series. I’ve played and completed FFI, VIII, X, X-2, XIII, XIII-2, and Type-0. XII was the one that intimidated me, as I heard it was extremely hard at times. I already screwed up my chance to get the Zodiac Spear, too. :(
And thanks, I do and will! 😀

  • Arianna

FAL’CIE?! Someone asks about armpits, honestly?! I wish to know if we’ll get more interaction with the fal’Cie!? Seriously…

  • Mihel

I disliked her VA as well, though she wasn’t from the USA, she’s australian.

  • Prima

    You know…that armpit question…

That is possibly a Sass Master. In that someone might have been ballsy enough to be sarcastic and in response to that shitty bust question.

  • Zerox20

    hmm..

  • Hope Fantasy

I really want to see the group get together XD been long for them and I mean LOOONNGGG 😛
