Hajime Tabata is still passionate about bringing Final Fantasy Type-0 westward By Erren Van Duine on September 17, 2013 at 4:06 AM

In quite the turn of events, it seems Square Enix may have turned their eye back on Final Fantasy Type-0 after nearly two years of silence. Citing fan demand and the changing portable market, the company may be turning toward a future release on the PlayStation Network.

Speaking with US Gamer, Director Hajime Tabata touched upon the recently announced Final Fantasy Agito and how that smartphone title will more than likely see release overseas.

According to Tabata, Type-0 had seen localization some time ago into English and other various European languages, but remained unreleased for “logistical reasons.” Now that Agito has been announced, Tabata sees both games as companion titles and hopes to bring both titles to Western audiences. While an official localization has yet to be greenlit within Square Enix for potential release on PlayStation Network, Tabata says that it’s in the final stages of planning as we speak.

He made sure to caution a caveat, however – as of now nothing is guaranteed but citing fan feedback, Tabata remains passionate about a renewed interest in bringing the game overseas.

The Operation Suzaku campaign leader is still passionate about a western release.

Noooo! I want a physical copy too! Make it limited, whatever, I’d totally buy a physical copy!

  • Ehren Rivers

I want this pretty badly, I don’t care if it’s a PSN-only release! I’ll try not to let my hopes get the better of me.

  • Somber

I want it!!!! T_T How about HD port? 😀 I guess they are thinking about it on PS4. Just like FF XV! 😀

HD port will turn this masterpiece into a legend 😀

  • Randy Marsh

    TGS please…please something at TGS…..

  • FFFan

I’ll believe it when I see it.
I still remember very vividly the whole “Fabula Nova Crystallis project is not a collection of sequels” and “vsXIII is PS3 exclusive” to [please] be excited for anything SE promises these days.

Like I said in another post it’ll probably depend on the popularity of Agito. If Agito does well overseas then maybe Sony or another company will take the risk of producing Type-0 in the west. It’s clear that Square don’t have enough money to risk producing it themselves.

  • Tom

I can’t believe they see ANY risk in releasing a game like this…

  • stevenm281

they can’t really use Agito for Type-0, I mean, what about most gamers that do not play on mobile? They won’t be able to get the game anyway…

  • karasuKumo

It’s because the PSP is pretty much dead in the west. They’d be lucky if they sold 250,000 copies, if that (it sold around 810,000 copies in Japan). They’d need to make back the money it cost them to localise it plus production costs and get profit. It’d either be expensive or a digital release if it did come over here.

  • karasuKumo

It’s just how marketing works unfortunately :(.

  • Alexis Crockett

omg tabata i could kiss you thank you

  • Jaylen Lightbourn-Levine

A QUICK PRAYER OF HOPE: “DEAR FAL’CIE DEITIES, YOU HAVE GIVEN US LIFE, FOOD AND PURPOSE AT TIMES NEEDED, NOW WE MUST ASK YOU TO BRING US WHAT WE DESIRE MOST… A GAME THAT WILL NOT ONLY BENEFIT THE COMPANY BUT WILL MOST LIKELY BE A QUICK LEGENDARY GAME… PLEASE BRING US HERE IN THE UNITED STATES OUR SALVATION, OUR AGITO AND OUR TYPE-0… IN THE NAME OF BHUNIVELZE AND ETRO, AMEN!!!” LOL sorry for all the caps…

  • ultromega

    Well, it’s something. 🙂

  • Sapientia

    Exactly.

  • miss chel

Good for him. I’ve become indifferent on this whole thing, though I’m starting to hope again.

  • Twilight Odin

I really, really, REALLY hope that it will be released on current-gen consoles, or multi-gen, since I won’t be able to buy any new consoles. 🙁

    Otherwise, I’m kinda hyped!

  • surakian

They’ve already spent money localizing it. They aren’t getting that money back by letting it sit on a shelf, so by releasing it they will get at least SOME of their money back. Sales can go up by word-of-mouth and some free social media marketing, so they honestly have nothing to lose by releasing the game. They probably already have reported the loss somewhere in their financial reports from the last few years, so they can only gain money now.

  • surakian

I still do wonder whatever became of that HD test Tabata said he was working on…

  • Protosin

    Tabata is a great man.

  • Sapientia

    Trump card of the generation:
Type-0 localization coming to PS3 and PS4, HD remake, BAM.
Life is 3/4 complete (LR, ya know).

  • MrFinalgamer

    HOLY FUCK THANK YOU!
sorry i had to get that off my system. anyway…let’s hope this does end up happening! i would buy it day 1 for $40 TBH. also as long as i can play it on the vita i’am good with it (the game is already gorgeous to begin with, looks better than most vita games too =P)

  • Like I said, if they do it, they’ll do it themselves.

  • surakian

We don’t really know IF they are planning to do it themselves. Shuhei Yoshida, President of Worldwide Studios at Sony, tweeted about it once the article about this interview spread around the internet. If this is coming out, I would imagine that Sony is helping them along like they helped Gearbox, 2K & Iron Galaxy get Borderlands 2 out on Vita.

  • Martian Wong

Tabata says that it’s in the final stages of planning as we speak. I hope the result is that they will release it on PSN

  • Dollow Rlance

I will believe it when I see it, when it is on my PSVita, and when it boots up in front of my eyes, otherwise I don’t care what he says, it is nothing but PR talk at this point.

  • karasuKumo

This is true, although the money that they would use to produce it in the west might be needed on other more successful and recourse intensive projects (FF XV for example). Hopefully you’re right and they do take the risk. I’d love to see it have a physical release with a collector’s edition. That would most likely require a third party producer though. Just got to wait and see :).

  • Kefkiroth

Hope it gets put on Vita. He even said himself that he prefers portables due to not having much time to game on consoles. PS4 is already getting FFXV, so Type-0 would be nice title for Vita.
