German Lightning Returns preview video has you fighting alongside the White Chocobo

A recently-surfaced video of what seems to be an extended version of the previous Wildlands Gameplay Demo gives players a peak at what it’s like to partner up with the Angel of Valhalla- A mysterious White Chocobo said to have some sort of sacred mission that may be related to the Savior. You happen upon the Angel of Valhalla being assaulted by the vicious Chocobo Eater, and with a little schemata finesse you slay the fiend and manage to save the bird. After nursing it back to health, Lightning can ride the White Chocobo across the Wildlands and (it would appear) even strike enemies from atop its back. If you get into a fight while riding, the chocobo will appear in battle alongside you.

The actual video was uploaded to Youtube by PCGames and bears a “computec media” watermark. There is German commentary we were unable to reliably translate, and a number of new little nuggets of information (including the purely aesthetic victory pose of the Nocturne garb).

Here’s a quick list of some other new stuff contained in the video. If you don’t want to be spoiled any more on game mechanics or equipment stats, read no further.

  • The Guardian Corps Shield, which you get alongside Lightning’s XIII outfit and Blazefire Saber, apparently provides no extra Guard Defense (which I assume to be damage reduction) but instead confers the passive ability “Guard Efficiency +15%”. This probably reduces the amount guarding takes from the ATB gauge. It also provides 1,000 HP.
  • A quick list of accessories with the brooch-like icon: Fighter’s Emblem (Which provides Strength +15%), Promised Necklace (Defender Lv. 1), Wolf’s Emblem, Magician’s Token, Twist Headband, Imp’s Crest, Fencer’s Earrings, Corrundum Pin, Stormbane Choker, Zirconia Brooch, and Frostbane Choker.
  • The ring-icon accessory, Thorn of Aggression, confers the passive ability “Tithed Vigilance + Veil”. The meaning of tithed in this context is unclear, as it can both refer to a regular tribute (perhaps a constant/recurring ATB cost?), or something cut into 1/10th (such as the strength or the duration).
  • The Shadow Hunter, the lance-like weapon Lightning appears to have stolen or won off of Noel Kreiss, adds a balanced 270 points to both Strength and Magic. It has an extra Stagger strength of +5%, and confers the passive ability Jump, much like the Dragoon Lance.
  • The Dark Muse, Mist Wizard, and Helter Skelter garbs start every fight with only half of their maximum ATB Guage, making them slow-start garbs potentially unsuited to being part of your default Schema.
  • Dust and Shadow, one of the very first garb to be revealed, has a boosted ATB recovery rate as well as 33% resistance to negative status effects.
  • Quiet Guardian, a more recently revealed equipment set, provides an automatic 15% resistance to both Physical and Magical damage.
  • Metal Armband, a returning accessory from the rest of the trilogy, now makes you completely immune to Deprotect.
  • The Liberator, a longer and purple version of Lightning’s default weapon with a round-toothed blade, provides 280 points to both Strength and Magic as well as giving a bonus to the speed at which your ATB Gauge refills.
  • The Femme Fetale, a rapier weapon most commonly shown alongside Lightning’s ballroom looks, comes with the passive abilities “Status Ailment Damage +50%” and “Status Ailment Duration +20%”, making for a possible powerhouse if you can slap a few defensive debuffs on the enemy.
  • The weapons “Battleaxe of the Believer” and “Sickle of the Faithful” come with passive abilities called “Brave Thief” and “Protect Thief” respectively.
  • The Death Herald weapon is the long, hammer-like axe wielded by the Anubys enemy. It bumps your HP up by 1,000 in addition to the 260 Strength and 360 Magic it provides. It has a passive ability called “Revenge Guard”.
  • The Goddess’s Grace, Lightning’s silver and gold buckler from XIII-2, gives no HP bonus or extra ATB speed. It does, however, give you an even 100 to Strength, Magic, and Guard Defense (the most I’ve personally seen in Guard Defense so far!).
  • During a brief fadeout screen around 3:40, Lightning’s Sub Schema can be seen for a few frames. The list has six slots, the last half of which are “Empty slot”. The first three, however, are “Unknown Garb”, “Knight of Etro”, and “Unknown Garb” again.
