New classes, dungeons, summoner pets and more teased for Final Fantasy XIV

The next big content update for Final Fantasy XIV is expected to launch within a couple months, once again providing players with a hefty bit of new gameplay to tide them over until an inevitable expansion. At yesterday’s NicoNico Chokaigi event in Tokyo, producer/director Naoki Yoshida shared a bit on what fans can expect, including some future teasing on possible E3 announcements.

On the topic of Patch 2.3, the team is aiming for Frontlines PvP to be implemented, as well as a new outdoor dungeon that will involve water – likely in La Noscea.

As expected, the game will be getting both a gunner and a dagger-user class, with both coming sooner than people anticipate. The gunner class in particular is something different than what people are expecting it to be. At some point in the future, Summoners will also be receiving Leviathan and Ramuh pets, along with pet re-balancing and additional buffs to the Black Mage class. More information on this will be shared at E3 in June.

In the future, Eorzea will be seeing its own version of the Gold Saucer from Final Fantasy VII and Yoshida says that it will be huge. Aside from games, he hopes to include match-making and chocobo racing elements. Personal rooms for Free Company housing are also coming at some point, and will be similar to the Mog House rooms from Final Fantasy XI. The team is also looking to sell Fantasia potions to players in May.

Later on at the event. sound director Masayoshi Soken took the stage to explain how Leviathan’s fast-paced rock theme came together. According to him, the song originally made use of female vocals but was ultimately changed last minute because the team decided it didn’t fit Leviathan’s male character. As a result, Soken himself ended up filling in much as he did for Titan’s theme “Under the Weight.”
