Retail version of Final Fantasy XV aiming to be on Luminous Engine version 2.0

Final Fantasy XV has a big feature in this week’s Famitsu following its appearance and new trailer at Jump Festa. Aside from the main article dealing with director Hajime Tabata, the magazine also included a special panel with the staff of Luminous studio, who touched upon some of the technical aspects of the game engine and its improvements over last generation.

As we learned a couple months ago, the current version of the engine is running on Luminous version 1.4. When Episode Duscae is out, it will be on version 1.5. The team plans for the final version of the game to be on 2.0.

From a technical standpoint, each frame contains about five million polygons currently. Character models take up a maximum of 100,000 polygons on their own, which leaves 20,000 for hair – that’s five times the amount we saw on PS3. Character models also have around 600 bones, which is 10-12 times greater than the previous generation as well. The data capacity for textures is also a lot higher.

Luminous Engine as of now seems to be limited to Final Fantasy XV. Recently, Square Enix confirmed that Kingdom Hearts III – which was previously scheduled to run on it – has since been transferred to development on Unreal Engine 4. It is unknown if they plan on using Luminous outside of XV for the time being.
