Director of Final Fantasy XV asks fans if they’d like to see a happy ending or a super bad ending By Raptorchan on February 28, 2018 at 5:55 PM

Hajime Tabata, director of Final Fantasy XV, attended a fan greeting event and one fan who was present shared a few words from Tabata via twitter. It seems Tabata is thinking about adding a couple new endings to FFXV, and decided to ask fans what they thought about the idea.

“Do you guys want to see a happy ending?” Tabata asked. “Or do you want to see a super bad ending?”

Tabata has been thinking about Final Fantasy XV’s future and what comes next, especially since they have extended the content roadmap into 2019, but for the addition of a happy ending, that is something he’s deciding on after looking at the reactions from fans. Beyond that, however, no further information was shared.

Final Fantasy XV: Royal Edition is set to release for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on March 6, with the Windows Edition also releasing on the same day for PC. If you’re looking to learn more about the upcoming PC release, Square Enix is releasing a free playable demo which players can try out. Head here to learn more.

The ending is fine, no need to add endings or change the one already there.

Verse 2 of Episode Ignis was also unnecessary.

I don’t see why the need to convolute even more the story, it just need to be more fleshed out and more present.

  • Gabriel Hage

We want playable characters in the main game besides the bros…

  • eijin_kiver

    I want FFXVI! Lol 😀

  • Douglas Passe Souza

That’s why we from occidental side of the planet don’t receive Japanese stuff. You guys complain a lot.

  • stevenm281

lol I won’t disagree with that.

  • stevenm281

    I want Aranea!

  • NoctLightCloud

The bros aren’t even fully playable? Only in fights as far as I’ve noticed. Or am I wrong?

  • NoctLightCloud

” a couple new endings”? Choose your own FF?

  • stevenm281

    true

  • Codes McGodes

Didn’t they already add a Happy Ending? I mean I haven’t played Episode: Ignis yet but I was under the impression they added a totally unnecessary “happy ending” to the game already. And this is in additional to the already unnecessary happy “reunion in heaven” garbage we already got. It’s a DARK game ffs. Or at least it’s supposed to be.

We don’t need new endings we need fucking context for the existing plots and characters and a completed map. Christ alive it’s like they go out of their way to not add the things we’re asking for.

  • Gabriel Hage

    You are right

  • Syafiq Khaidir

The End of FFXV and move on to XVI please.

  • Anonymous

I think he needs to stop diverging the story. It’s so weird how on one day you hear something great about them wanting to fill the story gaps and then on the next you hear this bullshit. We have alternatives endings (Ep. Ignis) and we don’t need anymore. They need to focus their use of resources on fixing what the fans have been asking them to fix.

  • Miqote

I want an ending to the development of this thrown together game.

  • Artemis Polara

I guess this wouldn’t hurt. Though how would one change things to have such endings? (outside of just losing fights for the bad ends)

  • Luke Watts

    Is he fucking serious???

  • Luke Watts

    Well said sir

  • boricuamixn216

More free content? Why not! Would be cool to see multiple endings in a Final Fantasy. Sone already have hidden endings.

  • Wazi the pa

This could mean that we might see additional endings via the upcoming episodes rather than slapped onto the base game. Even so, I’m personally not that interested.

In general, I don’t think any amount of DLC episodes can fix the many problems the base game’s narrative is suffering from (context, character development and the like), despite that its story is designed to be easy to understand & follow (from Noctis’ perspective).

For them to really tackle those flaws would mean to change up the overall narrative structure of the base game, and I know that won’t happen.

As much as I respect what the developers are doing, it’s not convincing me to come back. I hope to change my mind, but only time will tell.

At this point, I’m ready to move on from FFXV.

  • 4FFAN

As long as the original ending stays the canon ending, I have no problem with this. The ending of FFXV is one of its narrative’s strong points. It was beautifully put together.

  • SNK

Came here to post that. The ending was good the way it was because it was… well, the way it was. I don’t want to spoil it lol
Well, I hope the new ones aren’t canon.

  • Derek Clair

Agreed. The ending won’t fix the narrative problems with the game. And if they wanted to make a dark final fantasy, WHY didn’t they keep the original idea for vsXIII? That would have been a far better game. Time to move on to the next story. And please bring the FANTASY back to the series.

  • Ren

Multiple endings should have been there in the game to begin with, without even asking anyone. Most Japanese games do it, yet this one in its many attempts at conforming to Western standards threw that outta the window too. (And never even wanted to touch the issue later on either, ofc, after its time in dev hell.)

The lead-up soured the experience well enough already, as far as I’m concerned, and then the actual ending made it even worse. Screw that. Real life has enough in store to be sour about, I don’t need that sh×t when I’m trying to have fun playing a game. (Ie. “super bad” ending, like how could/would you make it even worse ffs??)

But above all that, I also agree with what Wazi wrote here: the base game’s narrative has too many issues for a few new endings to fix. I honestly would rather have had them work on THOSE in the past year, before bringing any “episodes” to it (not to mention the weird-ass crossover DLCs). Or bring those first, and then fix the actual story this year. Either way, just have it included in the roadmap somewhere. But apparently it’s not an issue for them, which is just sad. And so, I wouldn’t mind it either if they just left this steaming pile o’ dung for dead and moved on already, because nothing they’ve done in the past year has made me want to go back to it, and nothing they’re planning to seems to achieve that either. (Besides, you know, actually playing the episodes once each, for fairness’ sake, if I was stupid enough to spend money on the season pass back then.)

  • SNK

What are you asking for that they haven’t added yet?

  • Patrick Bateman

didn’t we already get the “bad” ending? lmao

  • Randy Marsh

But the ending of FFXV was already good, bitter sweet, but good. It made me feel emotions and I think that is the goal of an ending, do something like adding a “Happy Ending” will ruin that and make the redundant. Honestly, this is pretty stupid. Yes, feel free to beat me with a bat….

  • CallMeGod

The ending was so good it made hate FF15 and the whole series because I didn’t even give a rats ass about it since they sold me a fucking beta with so many cut content. How you guys even have feel any kind of emotional attachment for the story and the characters is beyond ridiculous. Luna show up and die. Don’t give a fuck, Ravus die out of know where, don’t give a fuck, Noctis pop out of crystal see his buddy, then kill Arydn don’t give a fuck. So fucking stupid, boring, no emotional attachment, and all of that happen in like a fucking second.

  • Miqote

    Fuck off

  • At this point just focus on a story that takes place in an alternate time line, IDC IF IT’S ALL A DREAM OR SOMETHING that features a different story. Everything is already messy as it doing this serves no purpose but to appease to small audience that wants. It’s not that no one liked Noctis and Lunas relationship but we wanted to EXPERIENCE more when we had the chance. A happy ending would give no feeling because we already know what it has no meaning since their dead. I have no clue what a super bad ending is but it sounds just like an idea thats crazy just because it can be. If you want adding anything that makes people who like the couples relation happier, just add more scenes to game that would give them some time together. Otherwise, let this damn game go already and focus on something else. All this wasted talent could be going into a “what if?” game that corrects all the wrongs. There is a sea of feedback and the way it’s being handle is just like….why?

  • He’s going to murder everyone lmao

  • Patrick Bateman

isn’t that what happened during the original ending? LOL ( only beat it once, haven’t beaten it since any of the DLC dropped )

  • •december

    When was this ? lol
    Do both.
    Do either.
Given either it would be terrific, because we’d be getting closure.

  • •december

    The bros are fully playable
    Within their own Episode DLC
Having other characters playable is likely a possibility with Comrades,
because there’s a motive. Besides, again, having their own DLC

  • •december

    FFXV is centre stage still

  • •december

    This is sloppy.
But he didn’t make a survey about it so it’s probably open ended to prepare us for Royal Edition, seeing as it’s the ‘definitive’ edition atm, and its out in 5 days

  • •december

I wouldn’t call it a reunion in heaven type scenario, but they left it way too ambiguous what the other realm/Realm beyond (not the afterlife) is, same with the extent of the Oracle’s power

I agree it is supposed to be a dark game, and the ending we got was vague too and I’m thinking an ultimate ending is needed, one.

  • •december

Go into hiberntation if you don’t like it.
Go cold turkey, for FF15 news…

    FFXV’s story
    when complete
    will leave a Legacy.

Believe me, haters and fans alike want to see this game come to a triumphant finish.

  • •december

Episode Ignis wasn’t really an ending it’s alternate reality,
This is what confuses the plot, I thank Nomura for that.
In order to fix what ‘fans have been asking for’ it needs a coherent goal (The Ultimate Ending) in mind, just saying.

They’ve been busy tweeking stuff for Royal Edition which is out next Tuesday

  • •december

    boricuamixn216 +1
they’ll never stop until FFXV gets it’s triumphant finish, which is what Tabata here wants us to think about

  • •december

I liked the ambiguous ending we got because I was fully aware development was on-going, but many who ended up disappointed with the game didn’t know that…

Yeah True/Happy/Bad Endings is a common thing in Final Fantasy?
And fans are pissed at FF15 having them? Lol, these dorks

  • He said he left it up to fans to decide the fate of the bros at the end but I really don’t know what he could do. Maybe he could make Noctis fail thus making things super bad for the world and its inhabitants.

  • Jesiah Grant

Happy ending = Almost everyone lives but a new threat shows itself or something
Bad ending = Everyone’s dead Noctis is king of the ashes omen trailer ending

  • Artemis Polara

One thing I thought they might’ve done once Episode Ignis came out was an extension of the ending. (Basically I thought they could’ve had it if you beat all the DLCs or something like that then you’d see the bros and possibly the surviving comrades characters watching the dawn) (Sort of confirm their survival)
But ya’ know, didn’t work out that way.

  • •december

Ready to move on, but not moving on yet!
Royal Edition is out next Tuesday.

The DLC execution while good was sloppy,
because the main game was sloppy at story-telling.

I don’t think they need to overhaul the game or change what was given, they just need to add to it.

We never saw Jared’s death, never saw daemon-slayer Iris, never saw Lunafreya show resolve or strength of character… Most of the hardcore details were talked about, happening off-screen, they could definitely fill in these things in the future instead of overhauling, there’s too many “I’ve heard this so it must be true” in the game and that was clear evidence of rushed narrative.

  • •december

The endings will be canon, they’re alternate reality of the same story.
There should only be one ending, which is what Tabata here is saying.
He’s asking about one ending not multiple canon endings
But like someone mentioned, Final Fantasy does True/Happy/Bad multiple endings so I don’t see the issue

  • •december

(And never even wanted to touch the issue later on either, ofc, after its time in dev hell.)
-What? They have been tackling this, probably every month since release – and no one knows what Royal Edition is about 😐

(Ie. "super bad" ending, like how could/would you make it even worse ffs??)
-There are Versus XIII fan boys & haters who complain FFXV wasn’t dark enough, this would please them.

Your points are fair and I understand your frustration but I mostly disagree. Character Swap and Type-D Off-road Regalia additions improved the gameplay for the better, almost completely!

  • •december

Jonathan Wedge, correction: He left the ending scene (Noctis and Luna) ambiguous, The bros are alive. I always thought this and Tabata confirmed they were alive at the end of the main ending.

A super-bad ending is likely a possibility, because Ardyn can change appearance, manipulate time and summon daemons (I say this last point only because Ardyn ressurected Ifrit, using some sort of Daemon/Starscourge witchcraft by the sounds) – I wouldn’t mind.

  • •december

Multiple endings is a thing in Final Fantasy, pass it on!

Versus XIII darkest themes were HEAVILY altered ore removed for Rating reasons: You have to see FFXV as an international game to understand that: for example Final Fantasy was coming to Chinese translations for the first time I believe, even so they had the skeleton daemons in some of the dungeons changed to have flesh (Culture reasons too!

Back to the Rating, they wanted to keep it Teen rating, because exposure. Sure I would love a Mature rated FF but its accessibility goes down, universally speaking – even the Dawn 2.0 trailer showing a young Luna abused by Caligo(?) in a lightning scene was deemed too intimidating a subject, this was 100% coming to Final Fantasy XV, but was scrapped (Hoping it might appear later still)

If you wanna know why anything else of Versus was changed let me know

  • •december

Noctis and Luna had a relationship?
    lol

  • •december

Super bad ending = The Rulers of Yore are possessed by Ardyn, The Solheim army of the dead are resurrected and bring Mankind to extinction. Several more Astrals fall, Bahamut is left to turn Noctis into an Astral. Gladiolus loses his Cup Noodles

  • •december

It’s about that balance you know…
There’s open-ended which is good, then there’s too vague: which is what FFXV is good at.
So glad the development is on-going even after Royal Edition release next week

  • lmaoo damn I see what you did there. They had an attempt or a close close friendship

  • Wazi the pa

Oh yeah for sure, such details that were left ambiguous can surely be addressed with little revision to the base game.

I’m just not interested enough to see them come to fruition. The game has told me enough that they’re not important for me to know, and that’s fine with me.

  • •december

It was like a platonic romance – so underwhelming lol
I do enjoy all this official artwork though, the ones of Luna.
She seems to have some underlying importance which the team are trying to address and present to us which I don’t at all. This isn’t the right way to execute a Final Fantasy heroine though

  • •december

    don’t mind* at all

  • •december

    lol luna is so dumb

I’m gonna see this to the end though…
I’m an impatient traveler, so i’ll be getting Royal Pack downloaded as soon as its available

  • xMysticx

no need to ask tabata your die hard fans will agree on anything you put out in a golden plate
honestly this question is useless. he asks fan agrees so its bound to happen and thats all

  • Wazi the pa

Best of luck, kind sir. 🙂

  • •december

    i found it rhetorical
if he was asking, he would’ve made a survey about it

  • xMysticx

he does not need to as we are here now no surveys gonna save his grace
no matter what people try to tell em . he got his way in this game so … whats the point ? ……. might as well we just watch and accept his almighty godly storytelling

in my point of view xv is a lost cause but you and all the fans will spam me removing my comments and even try to ” joke ” with me .

well i as well just watch on the fence shall we ?

  • Seb

this is just insulting , fuck that …

  • •december

    what

  • xMysticx

    just as i typed .

have a good day sir .

  • Jesiah Grant

Ultra bad ending = All the magitek soldiers become self aware and remove there armor. Eos gets taken over by nude prompto clones. The astrals turn back into being just summons and Etro gets pissed at them for thinking they were gods and banishes them inside the ring of lucii.

  • Noctis Leonhart Strife

I think it’s time for Square-Enix to remove Teen’s FF rating and change to Mature Rank. So that’s the FF problem today. They produce a game to satisfy everyone and end up not satisfying, precisely because of this. There are mature games that can sell as well as any FF. Square-enix executives need to change their view of the market.

  • 4FFAN

You need to chill lol. It’s just a game and you can’t force your opinion on people. Just accept that people can appreciate things that you don’t.

  • Randy Marsh

Very true. However, the only game where the ending of the game was truly affected with each different one was X-2 with its percentage system, plus those were already in the base package because “har har games were released complete back then, because derp derp”. My issue somewhat here is that we’re being asked this and the endings will undoubtedly be added way too late in this game’s cycle. It’s a very conflicting thing in my opinion, I just have mixed feelings, especially since I did love the ending to XV.

  • •december

They’re enhancing the ending – it was left ambiguous so the dev team could finish the damn game they wanted to finish by the sounds lol

I have a feeling they’re not changes anything to the ending…

  • Yeah I see what you mean about the platonic romance. It definitely was like a close relationship that never truly bloomed but only was also given a sense of an idea close to romance because it was her duty and stuff. Like shes devoted to Noctis but it feels like its because it’s her destiny more so than love itself. I got that feel from even when they showed them as kids. It could have definitely been handled a better but there isn’t any fixing this as it stands tbh. A happy ending in the after life is cute but meaningless since they are already dead.

  • •december

It’s almost like they made Luna and Noctis relationship take the backseat to emphasize the brotherhood aspect of the game (Which really wouldn’t have changed how deep their bro-friendship bonds were)

I’m one of those people who never saw it as the afterlife, but I’m starting to get that picture more and more… The realm beyond is far more important right now than the ending afterlife looking scene of the original ending, but I would hope they make some effort to to not change the ending but embrace it in a way that brings it to an absolute, sensible & impressive no holes finish

  • Randy Marsh

Debatable if left ambiguous, as those are post release interviews, which are contradictory to what was already established in the game’s lore dialogue somewhat.

However, we will all know in due time I suppose what the new ending ideas will do. Will they add to the already established ending or will they butcher it? Time will only tell….

  • Noctis

he whasup with the admin of this site removing all comments lol, is adolf hitler one of your siblings?

  • Jesiah Grant

Oh god…pc mods in general are a scary thing. Nothing is sacred once it touches pc

  • Jesiah Grant

Honestly what even was the ending we got with the base game? it was super ambiguous and left more questions than answers. Felt odd

  • •december

The question on every one’s mind…

  • •december

I understand why PC editions are released later now

  • Fallenblood

i dont want this. i want complete game add niflheim map

  • Seonagh Jedlička

Happy ending please. Sad ending just makes me sad. Where completing a game should be a happy time. 100% for happy

  • 4FFAN

    SPOILERS AHEAD.
    Here’s what happened:
Noctis died, the guys survived. The light came back and Noctis reunited with Luna in some sort of afterlife.
It’s only ambiguous when you overthink it which most people have been doing lol.

  • 4FFAN

Was it confirmed that the alternate endings were actually alternate realities? I thought they said they were just “what if” scenarios and not what actually happened…

  • Happy, sad, whatever. I just wish that the developers would just present the story that they want to present, regardless of fan feedback. They can only convolute the creative vision by asking for feedback in this manner.

  • •december

That’s like saying ‘Was it confirmed Noctis had a phone’ – Ravus was alive in ‘Extra Chapter’ Verse 2, bro – it doesn’t get more alternate reality than that lol

Omen trailer was seen in the Main Story reality via Noctis’ dreams at Lestallum so that aspect is still a little up in the air but Alternate Reality is canon in FFXV

  • 4FFAN

What I mean is that having alternate endings doesn’t really confirm that any of these endings happened. They’re just plausible scenarios that don’t actually end up happening in the timeline of events (the storyline). The link you put up confirms that. There is a real/canon timeline (storyline in blue) and then we have alternate realities/« what if scenarios » (in black). If we take FFXIII-2 or FFX-2 for example, they also had alternate endings but there was still only one true/canon ending.

  • •december

Come on you gotta give Nomura some credit he’s not that bad…

  • •december

what if scenarios still happened though
yeah there’s a main story timeline
but you answered your own question then, but it sounded like to me you were asking whether or not the alternate ending in ep. Ignis was alternate reality, and yes it was.

  • 4FFAN

Yeah my question was stupid lol. It’s just that in my perception of things an alternate reality is like a second timeline of events that happened…like something that happens in another dimension at the same time as what’s happening in the « base game », a parallel reality of sorts. And if other timelines were canon we wouldn’t know what events actually transpired. I guess I was overthinking it lmao.

  • •december

bro its all fucking up in the air for me too, for everyone -its bloody hard to follow… It was a beautiful skeleton of a game story, on release, but right now all it does is give you more headache when you try to go back and answer questions; it only leaves several more questions. It’s just best to wait for Royal Edition, lol they’re like little checkpoints… to the ultimate truth…

  • xMysticx

    he meant your director tabata

  • •december

mispelled nomura, ffversus13 wouldn’t have been a mess if they’d just let him focus on one project at a time… eh?

  • Codes McGodes

Yeah I’ve never felt it was even remotely ambiguous. It was quite clear to me.

  • xMysticx

    did i mention him ?
i mentioned tabata as most worst director … which dann mentioned

  • •december

Was Tabata also FF13 and FF14’s director? If you’re talking about FFXV’s Crossover/Promotional events, it’s to makeup for the years Nomura lost company profit, also most FFs do crossover promotional advertising. If you’re talking about the multiple endings, again its a Final Fantasy staple. You’d think people would’ve been through with blaming Tabata considering the circumstances but nope!

  • •december

The ending might not be ambiguous but the events leading up to them are

  • Shinobuden

Really? Now Tabata is asking fans what kind of ending they want? I’m all for fan feedback if it’s to improve things such as gameplay or other things, but there is such a thing as too much fan feedback. They are the developers, not us. Besides, what was wrong with the original ending? I didn’t think it was that hard to decipher and personally loved it despite finding the game painfully mediocre overall. It was emotional, beautiful and bittersweet. I’ll even admit I shed a few tears. Noctis, who didn’t truly want to die, accepted his fate and did what had to be done in order to save everyone. In the end, he still got a semi-happy ending by being reunited with Luna in the afterlife. I see no reason to add any more endings to the game.

  • •december

This is all true. Me, on the other hand, I’m just a content hog and I wanna see every morcel of content from this game’s universe… so I can make up my own mind at the very end

I don’t find it hard to follow, just thought too much for a second. I think all the things they’ve added are great and they’ve answered all of my questions in a very good way. I was just confused by the term alternate reality because I confused it with parallel dimension for some reason. But I dont think the updates are making things complicated at all.
