Final Fantasy XIII was finally announced for an Xbox 360 release in Japan this December, nearly a year after the original PlayStation 3 version’s release. Previously, Dengeki PlayStation had leaked out that the port was in fact coming and was later confirmed in Famitsu last week on the day of Microsoft’s Pre-TGS Showcase event.
Reaction from Japanese fans across the internet was varied, and some included death threats to Square-Enix President Yoichi Wada, while others spammed the 3rd Birthday twitter account, questioning the company’s latest move. Tetsuya Nomura decided to break the silence and responded with a message, presumably to preempt the official announcement that evening:
“Multi-platform is when you start development on a game with the assumption of optimizing for multiple platforms. Porting is something that’s done after you’ve developed a game specifically for a particular platform. The debate over porting is decided by the management based off the current market and the costs. What I can say as a developer right now is that VERSUS is being developed and maxed out for the PS3.”
Later that day Microsoft did indeed show off Final Fantasy XIII Ultimate Hits International for Xbox 360. The game is due out on December 16 in Japan, featuring English voice acting only, and an added Easy mode.
Final Fantasy Versus XIII is still PlayStation 3 exclusive.
