You’ve seen the opening cinematic, now take a look at what happens past the title screen in Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII. Although entirely in Japanese, Square Enix has uploaded a set of three videos detailing the game from the start of its tutorial, through Lightning’s arrival on the Ark and some of her various costume and customization options – all running live on the PS3.
You may remember this part of the game from E3, where Lightning travels through a bit of Yusnaan as she chases after Snow and ultimately ends up fighting a powerful dragon summoned by Lumina. As Lightning is the sole character in the XIII saga’s final outing, her attacks can be swapped out using costume-coordinated Schemas. Schemas can be changed by pressing L1 and R1 and essentially take the place of the previous two titles’ Paradigm Shift systems.
Different abilities are set to each Schema – two of which are available from the start: Divinity and Dark Muse. Their control schemes look a little something like this:
Divinity
Triangle: Thunder
Circle: Attack
Square: Block
X: Galestrike
Dark Muse
Triangle: Electric Blitz
Circle: Heavy Slash
Square: Lesser Guard
X: Light Slash
The three-tiered ATB system in Lightning Returns will require stronger abilities to use more of the gauge than simpler ones. Because of this, switching through Schema will be just as important as Lightning’s new ability to traverse her environment with ease.
