Final Fantasy XV is one of Amazon’s best-selling games over the holidays By Erren Van Duine on December 30, 2016 at 12:30 PM

Final Fantasy XV is one of Amazon’s best-selling video games over the holiday, the company announced in a press release.

According to the online retailer, Final Fantasy XV‘s PlayStation 4 version joins the likes of Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon – both of which were popular gift items. While individual sales figures weren’t listed, Amazon did provide this short fact about Sun and Moon: “If each Amazon.com customer who purchased Pokémon Sun and Moon this holiday spent at least an hour a day playing the game since its release, our customers would have spent the equivalent of more than 24 thousand lunar cycles capturing Pokémon.”

Final Fantasy XV is available worldwide on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Square Enix recently released a new update for the game, adding in features such as New Game+ and a Holiday DLC pack including a number of game-boosting items.

  • I am very interested in seeing sales numbers for December. If 5 million was reached in the opening weekend, 10 million might not be so far off… Look out VII!

  • Wow! While we didn’t get any numbers it is still pretty exciting!

  • As much as I wish this made for a massive number it’s actually a lot less impressive when broken down outside of these huge cosmic references. 24,000 lunar cycles is 708,000 hours if I’m right, and 42 days since release gives us around 16,800 units sold (so long as my calculations are right). And the statement dubiously combines Sun and Moon so in best case scenario if you assume a 50/50 split that actually means less than 8,400 FFXVs sold over the holiday period.

Assuming my maths didn’t fail me that is…

I wanted that number to be so much higher :/

5 mil units shipped, not sold. So that means pre-orders and then some games to fill the shelves.
Regardless, they would need to sell through those 5 mil then get another “order” of 5 mil if they wanted a chance at selling 10 mil

Considering how much game sales drop off after the first few weeks after launch, and unless square makes an explicit statement about the number of units “Sold”, I’m willing to bet that it wont hit 10 mil anytime soon (maybe over the course of many years, and maybe if they do a “Final Mix” version of the game, essentially selling it twice)

  • Aulix Indragonz

i don’t think it will hit 10 mil
even hitting 6 million is already hard imo, since it’s already been a month and SE doesn’t say anything about it surpasses 5 million copies sold
after knowing the game content got cut a lot and we need to spend another $$ to enjoy what we should’ve got in the first place, of course it will make people hesitate or even don’t want to buy this game

  • JReinert

1 Lunar cycle is actually a little over 27 days, so 27X24=648X24,000=15,552,000/42=370,286/2=185,142. Which means that at most FFXV sold 185,141 Copies, not a bad number at all.

  • JReinert

Remember that it is a goal of 10 mil life time, and life time goals don’t normally have a finite time limit, it is not like the game will be discontinued from production any time soon, especially considering the digital market, game lifetime has literally no limit now. On top of that with the impending PC release, they will easily break 6, maybe 7 mil at that point not even considering the sales they get between now and then. It may not hit 10mil any time soon, but I can see it doing 8mil in the next 5 years.

  • Ooooh in that case I did go wrong in my calculation somewhere along the way. In that case I take my statement back and would in fact say that really is a decent number. Thanks 🙂

    Good! Bring on more content!!

  • MegamMix

    With maths, it’s often a love/hate situation.

  • Aulix Indragonz

ah yes if lifetime i’m sure it can reach above 6 million, but no i still don’t think it will reach 10 million, among all other FF game only FF XIV capable to do so.
what i mean is sale within 3 months timeframe because it’s when the game sells the fastest

  • Some people didn’t like with this news, so they did math to prove that the sales are low. Such dedication.

    Much wow

  • NoctLightCloud

In today’s video game market, isn’t it extremely hard to sell 10mill? Was there any game in the last couple of years which was sold 10mill times, I wonder?

  • James Gatsby

they can always kiss our asses

  • Aulix Indragonz

yeah it’s extremely hard, only those critically acclaimed game in recent years ever reach those numbers
witcher 3 is the only game i remember from recent years that is capable to reach those numbers

  • NoctLightCloud

    Witcher 3, I see…

  • Wait? Who? I’m sure I’m not the one. :V

  • NewestType

    Right? There bandwagonners here.

  • NewestType

  • NotCarolKaye

I’m pretty sure he’s talking about the haters, not you.

  • stevenm281

Grand Theft Auto 5, but its not an RPG.

Anyhow, its really not common to sell over 10 millions.

  • Aulix Indragonz

yeah, it’s harder if the game is rpg, rpg genre is less popular than your normal action adventure game or sport game
i know it’s hard, but considering how big of a franchise FF is, the fact that they only managed to break the 10 million barrier once is kind of underwhelming

  • Yeah, I wish…
