Final Fantasy 30th Anniversary event: all the announcements By Erren Van Duine on January 31, 2017 at 5:33 AM

Square Enix Japan just wrapped up a special 30th Anniversary Final Fantasy event. FF doesn’t turn 30 until December, but the company picked today, FFVII’s 20th anniversary, to set out some of their plans for this, a banner birthday year for FF.

We’ve covered some of the announcements elsewhere, but it only seemed right to round up the general announcements from the event under one banner. So – here’s what you need to know:

FFXV, FFVII Remake and FFXII HD News

that was a weak ass event
    for me atleast

  • totenglocke

Wow, so much build up and the only thing that can be called “worthwhile” is finally knowing the release date for Final Fantasy XII HD. Square Enix is seeing the beginning of the end.

  • Invictus

I was hoping they’d start strong on the opening ceremony. Oh well. Onwards to FFXII!!!

  • Ryuke

I think my favourite piece of news here is the new Distant Worlds tour. I will happily sell pieces of myself for a ticket!

The rest of the stuff we basically already knew, apart from a solid XII HD release date and release dates for XV DLC.

  • gabrieuTG

I was expecting XIII HD Trilogy for PS4/XONE….
I’m gonna cry in the corner

  • stevenm281

No trailers whatsoever? Call me disappointed!

I don’t know if I’m being difficult but… nothing seems amazing here.

  • MajoraMan28

You know, call me innocent, but I was hoping they announced more stuff, some kind of trailer of FFVII.. At least what platforms will get the game (I’m still hoping the Switch gets FFVII.. I wanted FFXV as well, but nothing was said about the port, up to this point).
The FFVII Artwork was insane, though. First time we get to see what Sephiroth looks like in the Remake.

  • Daniel Masterson

VII remake is only releasing on PS4 at the moment.

  • Daniel Masterson

Its finally coming to Salt Lake City after years of me wanting them to come here. Me and my friends got tickets and Nobuo will be there! Im hoping he has a signing after the show

  • Daniel Masterson

beginning of the end of what?

  • Ryuke

Enjoy! The dates for this new tour have been released and it’s in London on 4th November, so I’ll get there eventually! Excitement!!

  • Daniel Masterson

    Awesome!!

  • Victor Petersson

this was a joke. it’s a fucking terrible anniversary. jesus come on!!! it’s 30 years, and you try to sell cup noodles…

  • Thiago Acaccio

If NieR Automata or Kingdom Hearts III fail I’m giving up on Square. Their events and games are becoming a shame, they are relying on old stuff and making bad games.
Back to your roots Square, all you do is to provide events and shows around your Final Fantasy franchise which reflect on the bad game that Final Fantasy XV was.

  • Pablo Sanchez

I doubt Switch could handle those games.

  • Fabulous Cat

b-but they sell special fork that shapes like ultima weapon I must have it!!!

  • Yuntu

this is the beginning, the opening of the anniversary

why did people expect everything here

    im so confused

am i the only one thinking rational about this … there´s a reason SE didn´t hype this event up, there´s a reason it wasn´t livestreamed

  • Yuntu

There was no build up. They just said “yo we gonna do this event that will start the anniversary celebrations, more to come after that” – and everyone acts as if they promised us a small E3

  • Yuntu

So they should abandon the FF franchise, their money make, because … you didnt like XV?

  • Vallen

I wish I could post that meme that reads “hey look, it’s fvcking nothing!”

  • Thiago Acaccio

I didn’t say that. I said that they prefer to promote the game with silly propaganda for old fanboys instead of making a great game.

  • stevenm281

I’m an old fanboy and none of that silly propaganda is for me.

  • Yuntu

… but what has this to do with this event?

  • Invictus

Only one joke stands out: PLEASE BE EXCITED!

  • Rick Lopez

loooool Cup Noodle will release 15 new flavors, each based on a classic FF villain. There’s also a special fork where the handle is shaped like FFVII’s Ultima Weapon being released.

  • Randy Marsh

I’m dreading to know how the Kuja Cup Noodle cup will taste like….

  • StolenUpVotes

Are you implying they are going to drop nuggets all year long? One would hope as there are events year round, but for being an anniversary event this was very underwhelming

  • StolenUpVotes

You’re not being difficult. Very underwhelming event.

  • Yuntu

they will, they literally said that themself “this is the start” or something in that order when they announced this

SE will not announce big stuff behind closed doors

my personal guesses are (all before december 2018, which will end the anniversary year – because the anniversary isn´t actually until december 2017):

    Dissidia console release
1 or 2 spinoff games (that we dont know yet)
FFXVI teaser somewhere (because SE gotta tease shit years in advance)

    and tons of re-release/remaster stuff

of course i don´t have insider knowledge so im just guessing lol

  • stevenm281

The thing is, it would have had a lot more impact if they would have thrown everything during the event, rather than announcing one thing at the time throughout the year.

  • Yuntu

but this event wasn´t aimed at a worldwide audience

of course it would´ve been cool, but they get the most attention if they announce stuff at E3/similiar things

  • StolenUpVotes

That is exactly my point. How is this any different than any other year? These companies drop information on projects at various events year round……having an event and then not utilizing that event any more than this is silly and frankly pointless.

  • stevenm281

Japan sales are declining, their interest about console gaming is dying, and yet, they keep their focus there, they keep creating meaningless partnerships, they ditched international ATR since Gamescom, and we’re the ones keeping them afloat.

I think its time they change their approach and focus on the West when it come to those events and they should focus on the games themselves, not related products.

  • Yuntu

    well i disagree on that

  • Yuntu

they completly focused the last mainline title on the west

like you cant focus more on the west than having a mini-e3 in the west for your game

  • Thiago Acaccio

Final Fantasy franchise should end on FFXIV.

  • Damien

One thing that needs to happen for the new Distant World’s 30th Tour. If they add FFXV music tothe line-up they better use either Apocalypsis Noctis, Hellfire, and/or Magna Insomnia. Not this LUNA or NOCTIS BS.

  • MajoraMan28

The game is confirmed to be multiplat. Which consoles will be getting it is still a mystery.

  • Phil Smith

Kefka’s cup confirmed to be poisonous.

  • Daniel Masterson

Yes I know hence why I said at the moment. It’s releasing first on ps4

  • Thom Kristiansen

FF XIV – Daddy of light.. HAHAHAHAHA idots

  • jamurjamban

Idiots? why? I see nothing wrong about that. maybe it’s going to be a live action with a heartwarming story about their game can affect a bond between father and son in a real life. It’s something that every game developer wish for, that their game can bring something positive to their fans!

  • Thom Kristiansen

I’m aiming at the wording if the title. To use the word “Daddy” is so cringey I’m speechless. Why? Because there’s several cultural references that implies something sexual about the word.
I remember a famous youtuber who played Bayonetta 2 that laughed his ass off when the protagonist said the word, and so did the the viewers according to the comments.

  • stevenm281

why? 15 is great, it just needs some improvement and it could be the perfect FF game.

If anything, online FFs shouldnt be part of the mainline series.

  • stevenm281

They started by focusing on Worldwide, not just the West, but then, right after Gamescom, they switched entirely their focus on Japan.

  • stevenm281

its a mystery because its a PS4 timed exclusive

  • Yuntu

i dont think so, while ATRs may be focused on Japan (because the Uncovered event was completly english, and Japan dislikes not being the focus) the marketing was still completly worldwide

  • stevenm281

We couldn’t even get one English story trailer depicting the final build with the English voice cast!

Japan got two! Even France localized one of the two Japanese trailers!

Come on! Marketing wasnt worldwide at the end.

  • Orlando Perrone

If you didn’t like XV that is fine, but don’t tout it as fact.

  • Orlando Perrone

I’m hoping for a special edition PS4 Pro, maybe some statues finally (I can’t stand those Play Arts figures), perhaps some teasers at doing FFVIII after VII? (One can dream right?)

  • MasterJ360

yay more empty updates on VII and news we already know about XIV/XV…..

  • Yuntu

I seriously have no clue how you can say SE needs to focus more on the Western market when XV was a major sucess in the west. Making 50% more revenue than XIII did in its first month in the US.

Completly off-setting the decline in Japan.

  • Altissha Caelum Morningstar

Same here. I love the XIII trilogy. Oh well, looks like I will play my versions on PS3 again.

  • taitaisanchez

Wait final fantasy and dragon quest have the same anniversary years and the best we get is a fucking Itadaki street game? No better final fantasy x dragon quest crossover?

  • stevenm281

You just prove my point, the success was here, therefore all those events should be either here or at least livestreamed for us, we’re the ones interested.

They can keep their mobile focus on Japan, but the rest should be focused worldwide.

When a market interest decline due to them not wanting to buy hardware, you let it go, and you focus on your market that do have the interest and the hardware.

  • Yuntu

… selling 1M copies is “not interested”? like … they really havn´t pushed the game that much in Japan, they excatly did what you wanted them to do

I think you overestimate stuff like ATRs and how much influence they have on marketing

  • stevenm281

I thought it sold 100k…. which I considered a flop, my bad.

  • Yuntu

wait which game are we talking about

  • Yuntu

not that we two talk about different things all the time lol

  • stevenm281

    FF15

  • seanvwolf

Technically FF is more their roots than Nier or KH.

  • seanvwolf

Of course you tease shit years in advance. I don’t think I can name one big publisher that doesn’t do it. It’s called advanced marketing to 1) put faith of your product into the hearts of your stockholders. 2) get that merchandising set up for the next few years.

  • Yuntu

Many publishers don´t do it. EA for example announced their entire lineup for the next fiscal year just this week.

SE is one of the few where every big project (well from the japanese side of things) gets announced years in advance. Of course that is because of shareholders, but its still shitty for consumers even though it doesn´t matter in the end (as seen by XV sales with a release 10 years after we first, in some form, knew about it).

  • Patrick Bateman

lmao everyone who replied to you literally just repeated what you said but worded it differently. I don’t know why everyone is reading your comment as ” It’s exclusive to PS4 only and not getting released on any other console” lol that’s NOT even close to what you said lmao

  • Patrick Bateman

    gross

  • Patrick Bateman

and he looks shitty unfortunately haha (Sephiroth )

  • gabrieuTG

I know it’s gross because they didn’t announce it

  • Patrick Bateman

gross because that series is garbage haha
